Reikox's Workshop 2024

So I did an experiment this weekend with the RxCE extract method. In the end I am very satisfied with the results, and would try it again.

For the wash step, I used some old rosin pucks and extracted them in two, one minute washes with about a cup of 95% ethanol each. I filtered this through a Büchner funnel twice.

Now, the distillation step is where things got a little weird for me. I added about 1/4" of distilled water in a pot then added the alcohol to it. It immediately went milky and I began to second guess my decision. This is the only picture I remembered to take. I was quite busy trying to follow the process as written.

I boiled away the alcohol until the remaining water was 100°C. I was left with just water and floating oil. An ice Bath got the oil to stick to the sides of the pot, and I filtered the sediments out with a paper towel. I rinsed the pot out a couple times with cold tap water.

For the rapid winterization step, I heated 3-4 ounces of ethanol on a coffee warmer and used it to clean my tools. I then added it to the pot and dissolved all the oil that was stuck to the sides. I transfered this all to a small measuring cup and put it in the freezer, along with the Büchner funnel, for a little over an hour.

After watching the latest episode of The Acolyte, I filtered the cold alcohol to remove the waxes that precipitated out of the solution.

Finally, for the decarboxylation step, I reduced the alcohol and decarboxylated the oil in the measuring cup with my fondue pot.

I got about 5 grams of RECE out of it. I lost a fair amount of it in the degumming step. I forgot to rinse the sediments and dissolve them back in. I also forgot to put some fresh alcohol in the freezer to rinse after the rapid winterization step. Next time it will be easier.

I filled a one gram vape cart. It’s pretty close to tasteless, maybe a slight hint of oil. It’s dark, I could probably have minimized that by using the Source Turbo, but I was trying to follow the steps as the author wrote them.

I will have to see if it changes viscosity or gets a burnt taste like the live rosin ones do in about a week.

Hey buddy. Every time I come here your doing what I’m into. You always continue to inspire me and you’re always positive. Thanks for looking out and teaching me. When I get to it I’d love to to make carts.

One thing at a time though. I’ll be sure to some through more often. Thanks for being so cool…:v:

I’ve yet to do any home made carts myself. Do you think the darker color came from the rosin you used? I would also hope to have some flavors but maybe you meant tasteless as in no alcohol.!? Glad to see all is well bud! :fist:

Hey @OGSince03 thanks for stopping by my thread!

The dark color is because of several reasons. One reason being the rosin pucks were old, and some still had flower in them, so it picked up a bit of green from that. Another reason it is so dark is because of oxidation. I did everything over an open boiler with lots of oxygen. If I would have used my Source Turbo, I could have reduced the exposure to oxygen during the distillation steps.

Yes I did mean flavorless. This process uses some pretty high heat, most of the flavors and smells evaporate away with the alcohol and water.

The goal of RxCE is to get as close to distillate as possible in a home kitchen. I put it in the cart to see how clean it was. In the end it’s destined for edibles. If you want some flavorful carts, the longer and more delicate process here may interest you.

Those taste great and are pretty discrete. Unfortunately the process takes days instead of hours. The live resin cartridges also tend to clog or (probably just my bad luck) break wasting a fair amount of product.

In the end, I still like a device made for rosin instead of a cart. My favorite device, and the one I use at home is the Huni Badger. Lately I’ve been using the Cricket when on the go. A decent device with a nice form factor, but chem/sour/diesel do not taste good on the titanium surface.

Phospholipids are part of essential lipids found in plant and trichome cell walls that help nutrients pass thru the cell. ‘Lipid’ refers to a family of molecules that include oils, fats, phospholipids, and waxes. When performing a solvent extraction, alcohol dissolves all lipids it touches, phospholipids included. Problem is, phospholipids are semi-polar and form emulsions which negatively impact the quality of the oil. So, if you extract oils with alcohol, you will dissolve phospholipids into your oil.

Still processing it with my love for canna butters ^^ Solvent aren’t used, and it’s not in my league in chemistry, but i start to ask myself if it can’t be extrapolated for better butters. I just water-cure the materials, then process it.

I’m willing to bet that butter recipes that use water undergo a similar process. This process is very similar to water curing first, just faster.

Before I went on vacation, I took a dozen or so clones. I accidentally forgot about them for a week or so and they all wilted and died.

I decided to take some more clones but only had six rooters left. So, I decided I would try these tiny cups filled with coco. I also turned up the heat mat from 78F to 80F and increased my lighting from 5% to 20%.

Around the same time, I cut down the seeded plants in the QT tent. Interestingly, the Chem91 x Orange Sour Dub female plants had a lot of immature and aborted seeds. These plants probably wont be used in future breeding projects due to this trait, but there were still enough viable seeds to find a keeper “mother” in the future. The Solo’s Stash and Dominion Diesel had a good number of fully formed seeds. I still need to clean and sort them before final storage.

@ReikoX Sorry to bother you buddy, What size are those beds your using?

About 35 gallons each. They are 18" x 42" x 18" deep.

Here is an update of that special JLo F3

So far 9 seeds were found, most likely dad is JLos.

Not a lot to update in the workshop. We got a new puppy. His name is Apollo, and he is 10.5 weeks old today.

I washed the testers. 1.6 kilos of fresh frozen (seeded) buds yielded 4.35 grams of hash and 1.46 grams of rosin.

I also made some cinnamon hard candies with the RECE. They came out pretty good. According to by back of the envelope calculations, they are about 26mg each.

The second round of clones came out much better. My dad only wants two. Not sure what I’ll do with the rest. Maybe I’ll fire back up the flower room. Summer is drawing to a close.

ouch a .2% yield! I hate that.

I guess seeds don’t have trichomes. :rofl::rofl::rofl:

My hash jar was empty, so I went looking for another one. After grabbing a jar of Grass Fire OG, this is what I put back in the freezer. From left to right is Grass Fire OG, Solo’s Stash, Dominon Diesel, and Chem91 x Orange Sour Dub.

Nothing in the grow right now but some clones and some bonsai mother plants, but I have been keeping myself busy.

We spent the weekend working on turning the kiddo’s old playroom into a studio space. She’s finally outgrown the clouds on the ceiling and the hand painted Pooh cabinets.

I did a little bit of mud work patching up an old land line connection, and filling any small holes and scratches. Then we got a few color samples. We decided the pale blue for the ceiling, and the lighter green for the walls. Then the light orange color for the bookshelf.

Finally I took down the fan and put up four coats of primer to cover the blue ceiling. The kiddo put three coats of primer on the painted doors. I’ll likely add one more coat as I can barely see some of the black outlines still.

Hope to get the ceiling done soon so I can install the new fan. I also ordered the kiddo a desk and chair.

Hey what ever happened with this fermented plant juice? How does it work? Im super curious cause ive had herm plants i bagged and tossed

It’s still fermenting away. I haven’t touched it yet. IME it is a great veg addative as well as a good source of pH down.
