Return of the Husky Hut

I think they are hitting their stride. The environment is dialed in pretty well. The RH is higher than I want, but the heat has finally built up enough to start dumping it out the exhaust.

I’m going to start playing an endless loop of steel drums in the grow room.

It’s pretty cool how they spiral out into space if the root zone is dark and humid. I assume they are drinking water directly from the air. I wish I could do that.

It just occurred to me that I haven’t really explained my setup on here. I just continued on from my RUI journal as if everyone here was also over there while I was active. I’ll make a little video or take a series of pictures tomorrow explaining what I’m doing and why.

This was my journal over there before they assassinated me.

I was looking at the pictures of the roots and thought about how I would perceive it if I didn’t know what was going on. I would be like “wtf am I looking at? tf is this guy doing? tf is a Husky Hut and why is it returning if there was no first one?”

There can be only Husky Hut!

Looking at the pictures made me realize that I need to get some elbows for the sprayer tubes. They are crooked as hell. The uneven distribution is wasting water and probably not drenching all of the cubes properly.

Still tinkering and tightening up the ship. It went from not being able to hold enough humidity to too much. The plants have a lot of leave churning it out now. They are looking pretty good. The first picture is of the plant in the back that was looking rough. It’s almost impossible to discern from the rest now. The extra space in the front is starting to fill in too.

The “vegetable room” at the bottom of my Pulse display is currently in my living room. I’m monitoring my own VPD to make sure I’m happy and healthy.

Alright, momentum has been achieved and the train is chugging along at full speed. New growth’s leaves are showing starbursting. All leaves praying nicely. Most of the purple is gone. Trunks looking strong.

I’m starting to get some long term data. When I had the sensor in a single 2x4" rockwool cube the maximum water capacity was around 65%. When I sat the cube on a slab it dropped down to around 45%. The slab wicks the excess water out of the cube. So this means the rootball is barely staying moist, but getting a ton of oxygen, and the plant is getting most of its water from the slab and small fill chunks.

When I used 4x4 cubes I wouldn’t sit them on a slab, and the rootball stayed wet because there wasn’t a slab wicking the water away beneath it. I didn’t have a sensor then, so I’m not sure of percentages.

From an admittedly very limited observation window, it seems that the plant prefers having a drier rootball. The downside is they need to be watered frequently and there’s a higher chance of wilting if the power goes out or a pump clogs or something.

I also noticed that since hand watering last Tuesday, the maximum saturation is a little lower each day. It went from 45% to 43% ect and is currently around 41%. I’m not sure if this is because of the stacked rockwool or maybe the roots are taking up more of the medium and making it less moist as a whole. It doesn’t matter how much I spray them, it has topped off at those numbers. So I’m looking forward to seeing what happens after I hand water them again, and also after they get out of stretch and go back to more of a consistent feeding.
