Return to growing after almost 20 years..

You might want to consider making a small, well insulated area to put your tent in that you can use the AC on, otherwise you could be wasting mega power because the tent itself isn’t very high in R value. So any cooling in the tent would be less efficient.

Oh wow… how much in materials did that cost you?

The foam… It was roughly $20 per 4x8 sheet. Used 6 sheets to build the 4x8x8 flower box.

Week 7 of flowering….

Overall things are looking good. Starting to fatten up.

I think I caught the gorilla glue (Josephine) in time to save her. She has a lot of yellow but she is still spitting out Pistils. Seems Gorilla Glue has a lot of brown hairs so going by the White verse brown is not going to work. Checking on the Trichomes they look cloudy but not amber showing up yet. Another two weeks if she will stay alive that long. Flushing begins for her tomorrow.

The wedding cake is doing well I think and didn’t suffer from my octopot/Nute ignorance like Josephine did. This strain doesn’t really have the brown hair like the GG does. Looking at the Trichs they are cloudy but not real amber to show. I say she has another two weeks. Flushing begins for her tomorrow.

The two indica bag seeds that could well be 2000-2010 seeds are really turning out well. They are younger than the WC and GG plants by about 25 days. All were flipped the same time though. They have at least 3 weeks to go. Trichs look nice and cloudy but no real ambers are showing up yet. I did not top one of the plants and that beanstalk is still forming the base bud and spitting out Pistils. I think they have at least 2 more weeks if not 3. Will probably not start flushing these until the middle of next week or possibly next weekend. We will keep an eye on them.

…and the hits keep on coming

Lots of lessons learned. From Fox tailing, to extreme swings in temp, now spider mites. Yeah the first grow after 20 years has been challenging.

So while looking at the trich’s on the GG AND the WC plants I saw spider mites and web on one bud of each. Since I am in the 7.5 weeks of flowering and the Trich’s look mostly milky white I decided to wack these two branches.

I was going to try and wash this harvest so I went ahead and soaked those two branches. Going to keep my eye out for more of these little f’kers.

I was planning on chopping the GG a little early so there is no loss here. It was loss when I under fed it. I really don’t want to spray shit on my plants at this point being so close to harvest.

I don’t see any mites, do you know where they came from?

These are just the pics i took before i found them trich hunting… I never took a picture of them as I cut the branch and drowned them immediately. I should have… They were there web and all. Have no clue where they came from other than I am in a garage.

Well here we are week 8 of flowering…

Overall I am pleased but it has not been without challenges. I am going to break down each plant and what is up.

Gorilla Glue.
Poor Josephine… What a terrible grow husband I was to her. Her trichs look cloudy. Her biggest problem is she was underfed. I corrected the issue about ½ thru flowering but her leaves were yellowing and falling off. Yesterday I found spider mites on one of her buds so I chopped that branch and drown those little fk’rs. It was cool though as I had never washed by harvest before so I was going to do it this time. This branch ( and a wedding cake one too) let me practice washing before I got 4 plants and many branches to do. I do think I saw another web today but I did not see any mites or other webs. I am going to keep a close eye on her. If I see anymore mite she is getting chopped and they are getting drown. I think I also had my lights way way too bright during flowering. All four plants including this one show foxtails which is caused by light stress. I am use 3 LED’s in a 5x5 tent and turned up to 95% I just think it was way too much light. She starts her second week of flush.

Wedding Cake.
She was under fed as well but ended up much better I think. Her trichs are cloudy. She too had a bud with those mites on it. It too was wacked and washed. I don’t see as much foxtailing on her as she was not totally in the almighty brightness I had going on. If I see anymore mites on her she is gonna get wacked as well.

My two indicas from seed collection…
I got to be honest they are doing much better than the commercial wc and gg. They were fed the same as the other two but they were about 20-25 days younger when I flipped to flowering. They too show foxtails. This tells me that yes I most def had a too much light issue this grow. They have a couple more weeks and I started flushing them a couple of days ago. Trichs are cloudy.

Yield is going to be down but I predict a pound from four plants this grow. Next grow I won’t have all the issues I had with environment control.

make sure to clean up good, don’t want the fucking mites coming back in the next grow. Wash any clones really good.

Sorry to hear you got those bastards! I hear that can be a real bitch. Hope you were able to save a good amount.

9th Week of Flower……

10/2
Well I saw mites on the gorilla glue again so it (in my best arnold schwarzenegger voice) “Got the CHOPPA”. Trichs were milky and amber was starting to show up. She had stop drinking water. This poor plant was under fed as my misunderstanding of using TPS1 and octopots. This was not a TPS1 problem but a me problem. If anything the TPS rescued it quickly. She was bathed in a warm water / Hydrogen peroxide bath. I Davy Jones lockered those little bastard mites (was not a lot) and cleaned up the buds. Water was nasty looking. Glad I did it. Trichs still all in place. Dried for a few hours with a fan and then they were trimmed down some. Left to dry out for the next 8 days. Trim down on the day 8 with tweezers (man I hate this shit) and doing a one more time drying in a cardboard box before going to mason jars. Buds in picture are before trimming. Weighted in today after trimming at 52.54g.

The wedding cake plant stop drinking water. Trichs were milky and 10% amber could be seen. I see why it is called wedding cake now. Just frosty buds. Since it was next to gorilla glue hosting the mite party I decided to go ahead and CHOP CHOP. Just like Gorilla Glue I bathed the plant in warm water/hydrogen peroxide solution and did the same steps as the gorilla glue. It too was under fed but hung in there. It had a little more time than the GG and its bud’s are a little bigger but not by much. It is on day 3 of drying now. Have not removed the buds from the stalks yet as they don’t snap. I am guessing will probably come out someone around 75-80g.

My two indica’s stop drinking water. I put the loop on them and the Trichs were milky and the amber was about 15%. So… I CHOP CHOP. They two were treated to a bath etc just like the previous plants. Currently drying w/ fan atm on low. I have to be honest these two plants from my 35 year old seed jar did great! They were about 20 days younger before flipping than the gg and wc but they were misfed but for some reason did not freak out like the two other plants. Their buds are very full and very heavy. Trimming them you most definitely could tell a difference from the other two plants. I might get 4-5oz from each one.

Curing time… Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end…

image

Everything is harvest, dried, clipped for the most part, and in jars but we are only ½ thru the process with this grow. So much chemistry is going on in the buds during curing. Your strength can increase if you do not skip this step. I am a 60-day curing of mason jars type of grow husband.

I was a little disappointed with the yield, but it was all my fault. For a first grow after 20 years, using a different medium not too shabby. It will keep me going till batch2 is done. 1st 2nd 3rd are the different times I weighed them after the buds came off the branches. I also use this as way to monitor how much moisture is still in the bud between weigh in’s.

Lessons Learned

Garage Growing:
Where to start. Controlling the environment even with a tent is extremely hard. This grow flowered right in the middle of the hottest and most humid time of the year in my state,. Huge temp sways and RH sway caused some problems with PM early on. I was late getting a dehumidifier in the tent. Even with AC unit a dehumidifier I found myself having to open the door to the garage going into the house to keep it where it needed to be on the hottest and most humid days of the month. Cant wait to see what challenges come winter. I am hoping the dehumidifier heats the tent up enough to keep it warm. I’ll put a heater in the garage if I have too. One more thing to point out. I did not look at how the power was distributed in the garage and found that everything was on one 15amp circuit. I was tripping that breaker a lot and end up having a friend put in (2) 20 amp circuits. Something to look at if you are planning to garage grow.

Octopots:
What can I say? They are simply awesome. I made the mistake of not following the TPS1 directions as written and under fed these plants. Something to keep in mind that you can have up to 10 gallons or so in 4 pots sitting in the bottom of the tent and they will add to your Relative Humidity. Was very happy with the Sunshine Mix #4 growing medium. I am going to dry the soil out and reuse again. This is expensive. Cost almost as much to ship it as it does to buy it online. I hope on batch 2 grow that I can see how good the TPS1 is. I do think it saved my ass when I realized the plants where under fed.

Lights-LED:
This was my first grow with LEDS lights. I think I should have done more research on how they work. My thought was “Three can fit in a 5x5, hell yeah load it up, turn them up, lets grow buds at the trunk!”
My buds, all of them except the ones on the outside of the lights, fox tailed. This is because there were too many lights, and they were turned all the way up like freedom rock. That caused the plant to stress. You can see the purple stems on some of the earlier pictures which could be a combination of light stress and under feeding. Second grow I only have two of these lights going on about 65%. LED is the way to go.

I will be posting back in 60 days to let everyone know how it taste  I hope this diary helps future growers who might run into some of the things I did. Thank you everyone for the engagement on my diary and all the help. A lot of things have changed in 20 years in growing cannabis. What has not changed is the good people you find here at overgrow willing to help you out and teach.

WHAT?!.. Dude, those are great results! New lights, new octos and growing in the garage…

Just spike the ball in the end-zone and do the wobbly knee dance already, ‘you done Great!’ :+1:

If you are growing out there in winter you might need a thermal break between the floor and the tent, maybe.
If so, look at the 2’ x 2’ home gym mats or the hard blue insulation board.

Cheers
