Seeds and germination rate

If they aren’t popping at all in the water before you move them, I would say this is your problem. If they are popping, but dying when they hit the jiffy pots, then I would look at the jiffy pots as the problem.

And even if not, ditch the jiffy pots or pellets anyway, they suck. Use coco or peat or whatever your medium of choice is in a little Dixie cup with a couple holes poked in it.

Good luck!

I use the paper towel and baggie
I like it because I can see what’s going on with out
Disturbing.
If the seeds are good just let them grow till they shed hull, put in soil, it’s easier for me.
Temps matter lots, cool slows or stops things
Now if they just sprout and stop and your towels
Not to wet or to dry imo that means the seeds are shit
However, I will then take seeds from same lot
Put seed starter soil in a cup and put seeds in that
To see if it was the method or the seeds.
With good seeds Temps matter
Just like with clones, in summer I can take a cut
Put it in a jiffy pellet in a dome on the windowsill
And have roots in 5 to 7 days.
Winter is a challenge for seeds so .heat map is
A big help.

Try before they go in the wet paper towel to soak them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water for an hour or so. 1 part peroxide to 20 parts of water. Also find some tweezers and sterlize them. Do not touch seeds with your fingers. That should help.

Right on I had luck with the jiffy’s pots in the beginning I’ll switch to soil straight into a solo cup

Thank you all for the advice, going to be touch and go I broke my damn leg yesterday. Of all the luck crappie and morels are popping , it’s time to garden and pop weeds :frowning:

Ouch, hope that heals soon…didn’t know morels could be cultivated :v:

Might need to put off-roading wheels on a knee scooter
Seriously though, that sucks and I hope it heals well and quickly!

Sorry to hear about the leg and hope for a speedy recovery.

Something that may help your germ rates is a pre soak cold snap. Put your seeds in the fridge, freezer for thicker shelled varieties, for a week or so before you soak/ sow them. The cold can help make the seed shell more permeable to water and help with absorption.

@Jhentz lots and lots of good advice. I just want to add yet another parameter you can check if you still have issues, your water. I know that in US there is a plethora of methods that is used for tap water and some is better then others. Some of the chemicals used for water treatment disturb the embryo inside of the shell and my advise is to use bottled mineral water. Don’t use distilled or RO water because it will pull nutrients from the embryo once it opens its shell.

Pz :v:t2:

sometimes the the “germination God” is good to me - but have lost sometimes 6 seeds //// Now have found what works:
H2o soak 24hr (heat mat optional) (some folks "emery board seeds before soak)
paper towel method ( paper towels sprayed with re-charge)(microbes) till sprouts (hea tmat optional
solo cups ( use KNL & Pro-teck((Dyan-Grow))
Then I use the Infinity Germination Kit - quality product . the kit even has an extension - heck!! even left plant in the dome for 2- 3week cost $100.00 well worth it now rate is 100% All FYI

Not pot seeds but a lot more delicate, they’re Shishito pepper seeds…just cut the paper towels and plant them instead of pulling them apart, very simple and no overthinking folks…you can also let the roots grow longer…

Some seedlings have not broken through the soil yet but the “proof is in the pudding” folks…Shishito peppers for the win…its only been 1 day ago.

These are Shishito peppers on the left, great for grilling.
