Seeds and germination rate

Only slimy. I prefer nopalitos.

Ive never seen anything sowed in such coarse material before! Is it a special blend or something to do with these particular peppers?!

It was on sale, I donā€™t overthink when it comes to picking potting soil, brand name product and these peppers will end up in my garden anywayā€¦

Oh yeah, it does the jobā€¦all 8 seeds has popped through the soilā€¦

I also use this soil with my pot seedsā€¦

Just goes to showā€¦

Perhaps we all baby our plants a little bit too much over here

Glad to know youā€™re not playing favorites. That soil looks pretty good.

Yeah, some of these soil pot growers use are overrated and way too expensive if you ask meā€¦all my pot plants and veggie plants will all end up Iā€™m my garden and be planted outdoors anyway so why buy expensive potting soilā€¦

Iā€™ve been growing weed since I was 16, now Iā€™m 60 and I know what doingā€¦ btw I also do hydro too.

I only grow in rotted hay and cow manure that I collect where I feed cows in the winter. Its GREAT. Its free. And it is a mix of new and 50 + years old. :rainbow:

Goat and chicken poop here. People have been growing weed like that foreverā€¦

I think @Dougdawson may be on the right track here.

If you are having problems with seeds of so many types it points to a more generalized problem than your germination technique. Iā€™m guessing seed storage problems

You mentioned above that you had misplaced your seed stash and stored all of these seeds outside in an ammo box, right? And it has been a really cold winter, probably lots of sub zero weather. And then you brought the entire collection back in from the cold.

As @luxton pointed out above, seeds donā€™t mind being kept in a freezing environment. But what seeds do not like is being frozen then thawed then frozen again. Especially when seeds are frozen without proper drying first.

Itā€™s a gross simplification, but cannabis botany is that they flower and drop seeds in late fall, the seeds dry and season over winter then they germinate in the warmth and moisture of Spring. If they thaw early, absorb moisture then freeze again, the embryo tissue can burst.

If you think back on the history of your seed collection, is it possible that they have frozen and thawed multiple times?

Just tryin to get to the bottom of this for you @Jhentz,

okra is a beautiful plant in the mallow family. It is about the same size as a small to medium weed plant and has leaves that look ā€œsomewhat similarā€ to the untrained eye.
Harvest about the same time as buds. Its a great plant for camouflage if you have people looking in your yard.

Bingo, gotta think about what they go through in nature.

To get REALLY geeky, when the seeds thaw and absorb a little moisture, and freeze again, the water crystalizes and the sharp edges of the ice molecules cut through the cell walls in the seed. Itā€™s the same reason we (humans and every mammal) canā€™t be put into cryo-sleep, our cells being punctured by ice literally turns us into gooā€¦ We donā€™t have enough sugar in our cells to change how the ice formsā€¦

Sorry, way too many nature documentariesā€¦ Iā€™ll be quiet now

Would seeds go dormant if exposed to 35 - 37 degrees centigrade for a period of six monthsā€¦?
ā€¦and if so are they done?

35-37C above??

Iā€™m certainly no biologist or botanist by any means, and the vast majority on the board here know more than I do, but if you look at it in terms of nature, typically that hot would be when they should be growing, not dormantā€¦ I dunno man. Iā€™ve always kept mine in the freezer, and only take them out when Iā€™m getting beans for my next grow (or when Iā€™m putting away a sweet OG win ), so none of mine have got THAT hot (that Iā€™m aware of)ā€¦

Sounds like some really good Shit :poop:

one way to find out

i tend to believe the change in humidity affects the seeds more than the temperature - no studies done- just bro science

@royal ā€¦the seeds are alive inside ā€¦I cracked one open after soak and the kernel was alive but the shells are too hard and they cannot break out. Thinking about how I can scapel the edge and help them to break out ā€¦I hope I can do something there are 80 seeds and grandpaā€™s stash R2 from ethos is amongst them.

The easiest way to crack a seed is between your teeth. You can control the amount of pressure easily. You will feel it when it pops. :rainbow:
