- syzygy's journal - the clown show

Yeah, a lot of synchronicity was at play here. Prior to encountering the bee that day I was thinking in the morning how I need to save a few bees that I find when the weather warms up. It’s not ultra common to see bees in the winter and this one was trapped in a spider web. The bee was discovered about 15 minutes after getting a notification on my phone that some brushes that I ordered for applying pollen have been delivered.

I got to play around with a few different types of brushes as well as the qtip and the bee and honestly I think I prefer the bee actually. The way pollen sticks to small paintbrushes is mostly either on the tip or the side and applying the attached pollen isn’t as easy. The bee acts more like an ultra soft / fine bottle brush -

so it’s a little bit nicer to gently walk it through the pistils and hit them all. I’m going to continue using various methods for a while as I’m not going to stop pollinating for a few weeks. Currently it is my favorite but there are other options that I haven’t tried yet. Always interested to hear what others are doing.

Ya for sure. I think the bee would be happier about this outcome over being consumed by a spider.

I’ve also seen other options; which I’m not going to buy but found interesting.

Basically an electric toothbrush converted into an agitated sponge(?) to make a cloud of pollen.

Looks like these are probably superior to qtips.

Honestly though the bee is probably better than both of these. I noticed this one claims

Use of pollination wands results in seed production comparable to that obtained with bee sticks

I heard of bee sticks from the forums but apparently they are commonly used.

Swear to gawd, Holy, your memes are the only ones that I’m ever legitimately amused by.

Me and my girl were getting ready to sit down and watch Shortcuts, one of the all-time great movies, Robert Altman, and I can’t find the first DVD (yeah, it’s a two-parter and because it’s awesome, no streaming service has it available ((why should streaming services show actual good movies?)), so you have to own the DVDs). I got super-pissed and despondent, no idea where it could’ve gone, but those memes made me laugh, so… Thanks haha.

Nice! Glad I could help. I was amused for sure

And they wonder why people pirate things…

That’s some good info there. I know what to do next time I see a dead bee ^^

Yeah, that,”Is this how to make seeds?” one is funny as shit. I kinda wanna make a t-shirt out of it or something…

Never mind, @HolyAngel. I thought you made that meme up yourself haha. I went back inside after smoking a cigarette and said to my girl,”Look, this is kind of funny.” I even went through and showed her syzygy’s pictures of the bee on the stick so she’d have a frame of reference and all she said was,”Oh, yeah, I know that meme. You don’t know that one?” haha.

You asshole!!! Haha.

This is the only downside of quitting all social media except OG, is that you really don’t know about shit like that haha… And now I feel stupid. I do still think that,”Is this how to make seeds?” thing is funny, though.

:joy: yeah both were “meme templates” I edited and added the words and bee pic to

One problem with using a bee (even tho it’s cool) is that you are spreading anything else the bee touched onto your plant. He probably doesn’t have cannabis pollen, but he could have picked up viruses, bugs, molds, etc. Things you don’t want in your grow room environment.

Funny enough, I actually thought of that. The bee was alive seeing as it was in a spider web so I put it in a baggie and syringed in a few CC of ethanol. Then I put the bag in the freezer for a few hours and when I pulled it out and dried the bee under really high heat using a ceramic heat gun.

You might have thought of everything!

Using those exact stickies and a layer of DE on top. I am all bottom water so makes it simpler.

Doubtful, but I do think you bring up a good point. Reason I thought of that is just the place that I found the bee in isn’t exactly an area I’d feel comfortable importing anything into my garden from. I don’t know that a spidermite would hitch a ride on a bee but I didn’t want to take any chances. I’ve heard bee keepers talk often about what a big deal Varroa mites are so that was in the back of my mind (with two-spotted spider mites hitching a ride that is).

Spores, bacteria, and whatever else also I think is a good concern to bring up.

OK, I think we’re Day 19 on flower right now.

Since this one is in a 1 gal pot I’ve been able to pull it out and check for issues. Zero issues that I’ve noticed so far. Plant looks healthy and hardy. Not very stretchy but seems less affected by the cold temps than the other plants in the area.

Triple Sunshine G

Also moved the original IRENE mother to the pollination area (100-150w only). Not going to pollinate her but thought maybe I could get a preview of the smells. It’s really rootbound and hacked back quite a bit so may end up throwing it out, but figured I’d give it a shot. I do have a backup cutting of it and it was painfully slow to get going as I was told it may be earlier in the thread by nube. I may have gotten impatient with it had I not been warned in advance, so that definitely helped.

That’s it for now - Seems like the fungus gnats are on the serious decline now with the excessive sticky traps, bottom watering gnatrol, and adding a clip on fan. Temps have still been kind of low (59-60F night time temps in there), but it is what it is.

on that pinesol, you have silverleaf whitefly’s too?

Plants looking great here! Trip Sun G looking :fire:

No, thankfully I’ve never had to deal with whiteflies on Cannabis before. It’s a piece of debris from either the straw or rice hulls. Usually I apply straw when it’s wet to avoid it but I was in a rush.

Gotcha, that’s good at least
fuck these whiteflys man

Was going to write that fungus gnats seem to be the only pests that find their way to the flowering area but I know the second I write that I’m going to discover my foot in my mouth. Plus the fact I was just around whiteflies in a high tunnel the other day adds to that superstitious caution haha. But no, I really don’t have whiteflies thankfully.

I heard blue sticky traps really attract the white flys @HolyAngel to get the straggler flyers

Also what’s the stretch looking like on pinesoul going to be another few weeks till I get to flower her out @syzygy

This is my first time growing it out and it’s only one plant so extreme grain of salt. It appears to be the stretchiest of the 4 large pots and have the largest internode spacing.

Pinesoul → TK → C91 → LJ in terms of height.

TK is an inch or two shorter and has much more appealing branching to me. I don’t like the Pinesoul plant but we’ll see about the flower. Lav Jack has the least stretching with the tightest internode spacing. The buds look like they will probably be largest on that one.

I like the TK, Bubba and TS-G in the tent personally as far as plant traits go. LJ is nice too, I’m still not the biggest fan of that smell but we’ll see if it grows on me. It’s the smelliest and frostiest in the tent probably right now (I can’t access the back stuff really with the tomato cages how they are).

Is that Pinesoul getting some purple hues or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

And what don’t you like about the plant itself? I always figured the Pinesoul was vigorous and had strong limbs based on Bs description

Interested to hear your thoughts on these when they get there. I haven’t grown that lavender jack nor the Irene but I found the LJ to be heavy on the lavender and really light on the jack, just a bit of terpinoline to let you know it’s there and that was really it. Reminded me a lot of certain space monkey phenos and definitely evening/nighttime herb for me. Relaxing for sure, and pretty tasty too.

The Irene was like a better bubba imo. Very similar taste and flower structure imo. Little stronger potency but virtually same effects for me. It keeps me up if I’m getting sleepy.
