As a kid, I remember seeing a couple terrariums at the Victoria and Albert museum that hadn’t been opened in a century (so add another 50 years to that).

I started this one a few months ago.
Started with some pumice, then some leaf mold, moss from the yard and a houseplant start that wasn’t doing so hot…

The moss is really taking off and the little start has turned around and is enjoying its new home.

is this something you buy or go out and find moldy leafs.

Leaf mould is composted leafs with no added greens to it. It takes like 2 years to get really good and broke down. When it’s done it smells like fresh earth out in the woods. Worms love it.

I get it from my yard. Have been blowing my leaves against the fence for 8 years. I dig down to the bottom and harvest the black gold a few cups at a time.
I started a proper leaf pile last fall that I will add to from now on instead of spreading it out so much.
It is best to use what is around your property If possible, this way you know your IMO likes your environment

Darn, I cleaned out an area where leaves have been rotting for a few years.

Just spotted this guy in my little terrarium :):mushroom:

so amazing how life come and goes inside this thing.
There are also some tiny snails in here now I think. Trying to get a pic of one is proving challenging.

I used to build vivariums…or at least try to. The secret to a good Viv is to use great stuff foam. Use the foam to mold “rock” walls and then cover in a layer of black silicone and finally peat or sand. Gives it a natural rock face look, plus you can cut out plant holes and plant directly into the great stuff.
