Anyone know what kind of a mushroom this is?

It does not stink. Upon further research it may be a stinkhorn as they do not sink till hatched. I may hatch it.
Not sure if there’s a better thread to ask for help with this, because clearly these are not Morel mushrooms, and technically I wasn’t foraging, but I found these in my yard and was hoping they might be edible.
As you can see, they’ve already been chewed up a bit by some critters or slugs or snails. But my former neighbor (RIP) told me that if animals or slugs eat mushrooms, they aren’t poisonous. Whether this is true, I’m not sure.
My brief internet sleuthing is telling me I either have Chanterelles, which are delicious, or I have Jack-O-Lanterns, which are poisonous.
Any mushroom experts care to enlighten me?
