I never have heard them called that but it all makes sense. People in my area have never recognized that these are not a regular morel, not like the woods grey’s yellows or blacks. They all have a small white stem that is pretty stout. Come in shades from yellow to dark gray and are an early mushroom. I pick these when I should be picking blacks. I learn something every year…thanks teach.
I found two messes over the weekend here is the first
And the second batch
Damn man, nice find. @Bullskinner can you tell me where you are at? Not exactly but a general idea so I know what your general latitude is.
I sent you a PM
After a conversation with @Bullskinner I’m feeling optimistic about morel hunting tonight and the next few days.
Still am not seeing any in my area.
Same here. A warm front is on its way here. So may first will be the right time. Everything seems to be on time for this year. Plus we have had plenty of rain. Can’t wait!
Lots of rain here the past week with chilly temps and possibly snow in a few days. Got to love living somewhere where you can have the heat and AC on in the same week.

1 Morel Habitat Kit ®
1 Shiitake Mushroom Kit
1 Lion’s Mane Mushroom Kit
1 Sonoma Brown Oyster Mushroom Kit
30 years ago I cut several loads of 4’ white oak logs, 6-8" in diameter for a couple friends that where growing the shiitake mushrooms. They had pretty good luck the first couple years buy something went wrong…it’s been so long ago I can’t remember what it was and they are both long gone
Keep us posted on that kit please, I have always wanted to try one. My grandparents went through a lot to save all the trimmings and pieces (spores and dirt plus misc) from thier mushroom bags for 20 years and dumped it all in a place behind our house that looked like it should have grown mushrooms. It never did. So I am really interested to see if it works. I do know a company in Indiana is growing them, big yellows they sell in the grocery stores for $40.00 a pound…so it will and can work
Game on.
Stumbled into a patch of black morels but it was already dark. Going to continue the hunt tommorow.
Our normal patch filled our big mushroom bag last night. Made an amazing meal for dinner with meat. We are going out today again.
I use to have a couple places those blacks where thick 30 years ago…you could pick them by the pounds but they are a rare find around my part of the country anymore. The horse necks(pecker heads) are also about extinct, I haven’t found 10 in as many years and they use to be everywhere. Hell I wouldn’t even pick them as a kid, Mushrooms where everywhere back 30 years ago
I really miss being able to stomp around in the woods…
Enjoy the hunt-
Oh,really nice, hope i can hunt some
Found a couple pecker heads today…
Then walked a billion more miles up hill for these two
The warm weather this week should have them going a lot better
