I Ve had even more than 30Ā° C,for weeks, months, the flavour Is still strong and good on my dried flowers
I am actually having temp peaks of 31Ā° C during the early afternoon and the terpenes are still there.

What I observed Is that when the temp lowers or drop, the plants smells so much Better tho

This article is relevant to our discussion. They used clones from the same motherstock and split them between indoor and outdoor environments. They left a lot to be desired; weā€™re lacking all kinds of needed info on the indoor environment, light, length of time, etc.

The study examines the differences in cannabinoid and terpene profiles between cannabis grown indoors with artificial light and media versus those grown outdoors in natural soil and sunlight.

  • Indoor-grown cannabis displayed more oxidized and degraded cannabinoids than its outdoor counterpart.
  • Outdoor-grown cannabis contained unique cannabinoids not found in indoor samples and had a different terpene profile, especially sesquiterpenes.
  • Indoor-grown cannabis exhibits accelerated cannabinoid decomposition compared to outdoor samples, due to the decrease in terpenes which act as antioxidants.

My takeaway from this one wasā€¦ itā€™s not that the outdoor grow is better, itā€™s that thereā€™s something about the controlled nature of the indoor grow that limits terpene expression. Indoor growing may not unlock the entire genome of any one strain.

They postulate (and I paraphrase here) that insect activity, UV light and other stressful insults of the outdoor environment play a role in increasing terpene production and type. Iā€™ve not yet really dabbled with the various stress response pathways and potions but I might now.

My experience with it was far more shallow. I gave this indoor grower clones of my meat breath plants which have a distinct smell and flavor. They cranked out flavorless weed, somehow. Soā€¦ something environmental must be the reason. Like, the host of parasites he couldnā€™t get rid of: Mildew and spider mites. Or something else about the culture. Hard to figure it out.

I see this with my outdoor grows, it is just different than indoor.
The indoor seems to have more bag appeal, but outdoor weed seems to be a sleeper type, it does not look as good but the buzz is very good, I can not call it better really, but different.

Same here. I ran Grimm Bros Durban Nights both indoor and outdoor this year. Outdoor was still ProMix + Salts, just inside a greenhouse. Harvested at the same time. The outdoor is a tad greasier, stinkier, more complex. This could be down to seed vs seed as I didnā€™t use clones. I had this conclusion before reading this study, fwiw. The outdoor isnā€™t more psychoactive though, not that I can tell.

I read the study and it said that the environment that the plant is grown in will have an effect on the terpene production. It only differentiated the indoor from the outdoor as being completely different environments, and nothing about the how of it all. The variables included temps, photoperiod, medium/nutrient. With the only control being the plant itself. Definitely aligns with reality.

From the study:

The outdoor samples were grown in raised beds using a proprietary mixture of all-natural soil and composts under full sunlight.

The indoor samples were grown under artificial light in a proprietary growth medium.

Itā€™s not clear if they are the same. The way it is worded, it sounds like they differ.

They also note,

light intensity/spectra are important factors affecting the chemical composition and secondary metabolism in cannabis plants

Iā€™m not seeing the data on the lighting (a primary growth input) other than full sun (outdoor) and artificial lighting (indoor).

Very interesting and showing differences though I have questions on the experiment design and variable control.

Good point!
Soil/medium differences will change the terp profile.

Outdoor light tends to have more blue in it.
That will change things a bit for the terps and cannabinoids.
Also due to the blue light the buds tend to be more leafy outdoors compared to say 3500K light like a HPS ect.

I can Say for sure heat until 34-35Ā°C Is not the issue,I am a witness for that
