Turning off the light for a few hours while in veg?

I have someone coming to my house on Wednesday to walk me through my CPAP thing finally which is great… but I’m growing plants that smell pretty good in veg already. My buddy came over the other day when I had the windows open and said he could smell it clearly outside in the driveway (I must be used to it).

I have a filter that will help somewhat but with the light on they smell more than at night. Maybe just being “awake” is part of it but I know the heat isn’t helping. I could hide the light by closing the tent but the temp is going to go through the roof in there if I do that and I have no idea if this guy will be here for ten minutes or 2 hours.

Ideally I would shut the light off like 2 hours before he got here and run my filter in that room but I’m worried about stressing them with the dark right in the middle of their day. I think about how cloudy sunless hours/days happen in nature so it should be ok but wanted to get opinions on here.

This is the noobest growing related question I’ve asked in years!

I don’t think there’s much you can do at this stage. Remember, your nose is somewhat accustomed to it. It’s like how a smoker can’t smell cigs/smoke on their clothes and hands but everyone else can.

If you have to?..go with the Mickey The Dunce routine…“Huh…No idea what you’re talking about…I don’t smell a thing!” :):)

So is this a vote against turning off the light?

I know some smell may just be there regardless but no light and filter would kill a good amount. I’m not afraid of him saying “I smell weed and I’m calling the cops”, I’m afraid of him just calling the cops

I’m actually thinking now about going the complete opposite direction though. Weed is legal but growing isn’t here. I think I might just spark a fat joint and meet him at the door smoking it. Then any other pot smells all become the joint I was just smoking…

I wouldn’t recommend fiddling with the photo period. I’m of the opinion they smell night or day. The answer to your issue is a proper filter. It’s always the last thing thought of by growers. A good quality filter eliminates any smell.

They definitely smell at night too but from being in the room the smell is more during the day, specially now that they’re under a CMH instead of LED, the heat alone is definitely getting more aroma out of them.

I really think at this point I would be better off smoking and making it obvious I was smoking so then all the smell is blamed on that though. I don’t love the idea of turning the light off midday either.

Proper sized or over sized carbon filter really make a difference.
If you get a over sized fan and filter and have the air moving fast enough to clear your room appropriately but slowly through the filter it’s even more efficient, more contact time with the carbon.

In the mean time don’t change your light schedule if you don’t need to. Light some scented candles and clean your kitchen before company arrives, if your house smells like cleaner and it’s not a mess. Any weed smell anyone noticed could be from a neighbour

They def smell less at night then in the day when the light is on and the increased heat triggers those volatile terpines and trichs. It is perfectly fine to turn them off for Up to 6 hours. You could do this once or everyday a lot of people do 18/6 or 20/4 light schedules for veg, myself included and I used to be a 24 hours on kinda guy.

you can absolutely turn off the light during veg for a few hours with no negative consequences, if that’s what you need to do. But, your filter should be covering the smell, lights on or off.

I do 18/6 myself. It was more the random darkness in the middle of the 18 I was worried about

I use the filter in flower intermittently and it does a good job but I don’t generally run it until I smell it, and not usually overnight. I believe the filter and fan I have does the job but after my buddy smelled it so easily when I didn’t makes me wonder how used to it I am. I didn’t have the filter on when he smelled it but still.

my plants smell in veg too. I would run the filter 24/7/365. you will get nose blind to the smell after awhile

Just fry up some bacon… thats all they will smell the whole visit, plus you get bacon.

I would vote on the turn them off side. Also on proper carbon filtration. The darkness for a couple hours won’t hurt them, not really enough time to worry about hurting them IMO. I also like the bacon idea, mainly because you can’t go wrong with bacon.

I dig your style man! :beers:

I’m thinking turn them off, throw the bacon on, and leave a bowl in plain sight in case there’s any weed smell through the bacon.

Turning the light off would be good too because I leave my tent open and the door to that room lights up like there’s an adventure behind it. Closed tent would solve that but closed tent + hot light wouldn’t be great and my filter just vents out into the room so that heat would just be building.

I usually make a nice pasta sauce if I have a service person coming over. I heat up the olive oil while I’m chopping the onions and mincing the garlic. I don’t want the oil to get too hot, but I wait until a few minutes before they get here to throw the onions in the oil. At which point, I also turn on the recirculating exhaust fan above the stove to get that air moving - and then I put the ceiling fan on in the kitchen. As they pull into the driveway, I put the garlic in with the onions and stir until they knock. At that point, I turn off the heat, remove the pan from that burner and answer the door. This will ensure nothing burns, but puts tons of aroma into the air as you’re speaking with your visitor. Once you welcome them in and they’re getting set up, throw the tomatoes on top of your onions and garlic, stir everything up and put it back on the burner on a low setting.

BTW - if you can see your visitor will outlast your garlic and onion aroma, you can start a new batch of garlic to saute and throw in with your sauce.

Too late for this time but when I need to clear the smell for a short period I open the Ona.

I never thought I would say this but it is legal in Canada now so I could mask the smell of my grow by smoking a joint

You are overrating my abilities as a chef by a looongshot  It’s a good idea though! Garlic will definitely dominate an airspace.

Might have to look into some just to have on hand if not before Wednesday.

You’re allowed to grow though aren’t you?

Yes, I just found it ironic. You can’t grow in every province here so was just kind of laughing that someone could actually cover up their grow smell by smoking their grow
