I thought I was going to open a can of WhoopAss on this attic ladder and it would make almost everything moving forward a lot easier.
Instead, I opened a can of worms on myself!
Need a rough opening of 22-1/2 inches x 74 inches (accounts for swing of ladder). I decided to install the attic ladder now because I know it has to be done (great timing since the cloning machine is down - in dry-dock! ), I wouldn’t have to move that temporary Air Conditioning exhaust ducting. And it would allow me to get up there easier to at least properly direct that exhaust ducting out the open eaves (I still think that round-to-square (rectangular) transition duct will fit in there) and also allow me to exhaust that grow space once I close it in and install that adhesive-backed zipper.
I picked this bay and then realized (after cutting into the Luan ceiling panels), oh…that bay has a sistered joist reducing that bay dimension by 1-1/2 inch.
Then in that same bay, on the North edge, there is a diagonal support attached to that joist and up to the rafter, further narrowing that dimension.
I used a straight edge where I could BUT it was all above me - not by much, but it was above my shoulders. The height of that space is around 60 inches. I had to keep moving the straight edge back farther and farther on the South edge of that bay just trying to find the edge. Wow! That was rough!
Now, I noticed that end of the sistered joist only had one nail in it on this end of the board as far down the board as I can easily see.
So, do I cut this sistered joist back about 18 inches in its length to reopen that bay? As I said there is only one nail in it as far as I can see. Or do I install that 12 foot floor joist I have from the loft handrail on the other side of that bottom truss chord and sister it on the other side removing the one that is in my way giving me back the 22-1/2 inch bay? Or, do I move it all South to the next bay that is 22-1/2 inches?
I’m leaning toward the latter. There is some Luan in the shed. Large pieces, from memory…maybe even a full sheet. This will also give me a chance to test out some trim on the ceiling panels. They used base trim, for some reason. And I want to see what doubling the trim to make it look more like a Lattice ceiling, evenly spaced and not the mess it is now!
BUT, MAN, did I trash the space outside the Rooting space. Just thrashed it.
Oh, right in the middle of this the light went out. I thought, "oh, crap…the ballast just died and I don’t have a replacement! "
It didn’t die. I traced the cord and saw that I had unplugged it. Whew!
And, on a positive note: I put a little weight on the top bucket of the one that was floating negatively effecting my plan to lower the clay pebbles to allow the roots (such as they are) to see some nutes in the feeding cycle. It worked. I put a speed-square on the edge and the bucket stayed in place!
I am seeing healthy new growth in the first 6 clones I put in there at 7am on March 10th, so 4 days ago.
IF I can get lights out sometime soon I’ll snap some shots of them. I mean even IF I accidentally unplug it again!
I have not had a rest period since I got up yesterday morning in horrible back pain
Good morning!
Make it a great day!
P.S. where I bed down is right under the rooting side of the loft, right under it I did pull the covers up and I’ll have to give it a proper cleaning before I could even lay down on it! That’s IF I ever lay down again!?!?
