I really liked the f1 male used for the ix / bx it reminded me of og and chem cuts I have grown in the past with long vining branches that have many nodes for floral clusters.
I also like this trait because it helps plants produce well in crowded or shaded conditions. If a growth point isn’t getting light, it will just vine its way through the foliage to get to it. it tends to be a good trait for outdoor growing in damp conditions.
Very quick flowering, this one was eager to pollinate and then die. Should make for very quick sinsemilla.
Breeding this guava hashplant is like a quest to find a balance in the line between traits desirable for sinsemilla, and traits desirable for easy breeding and reproduction.
I really value the guava as a medical line, this has been time well spent.
the incredibly quick flowering time is a very desirable trait for outcrossing to long flowering heirlooms for a quicker flowering cycle, and to easily adapt landraces for easy indoor cultivation with modern techniques.
Damn, those Guava are busting out the seems with seeds
Great looking outdoor plants too
Love your very detailed smoke reports, I’m so terrible at those…

I have some Ken’s Grandaddy Purple Collective Berry Larry seeds soaking right now.
Goji OG b-cut x (Larry OG x grandaddy purple)
it’s the very beginning of Day 3 with nothing yet, but I suppose that’s not unusual. I am doing my usual lacto-bacillus /whey seed soak alternating with hydrogen peroxide.
In case I don’t see anything within the next 2 days, I have also started an experimental seed sprout tea based on @danzakuduro’s seed sprout tea technique.
My twist on the method is using fresh cannabis seeds instead of popcorn or barley. I figure what could be better for invigorating old-ish weed seeds than hormones and enzymes from fresh weed seeds.
I used about 3 dozen seeds from 2020 outdoor and a small handful of seeds from my 2019 outdoor. hundreds in total.
Hopefully these berry-larry will sprout without any further assistance or coaxing, and the sst will not be needed for these. and if needed, hopefully my canna seed sst will be ready in time. I never soak seeds more than 5 days, after 5 days they get planted shallow in moist soil.
as usual I only started half the pack so I can try again if necessary.
Just did a thorough inspection of the plants in the flower tent, and worked on spraying them down with lactobacillus to wash away the old pollen. I got the maple leaf and guava done, will need to work on the lebanese guavas tomorrow.
The lebanese guava reveg monsters are pretty cool plants. they are producing resin on pretty much the entire surface area. This whole thing and all the material on it could be vaporized. Or the whole thing could easily be turned into hash / rick simpson oil.
Smells like a sweeter intensified version of the pure lebanese. red berries, melon, herbs, celery, dry soil, and fresh air. Very heady smell.
The maple leaf indica is now pale and faded with purple tips. The buds are fully seeded, and the seeds have just reached their full size. They will need to ripen for another week or so. The smell is amazing. The flowers smell very intensely of ripe cantaloupe with cold watermelon. When I checked the resin, it also had lemon and intense blueberry notes. Incredibly sweet smelling, the maple female is definitely the dominant smell in the tent. Can’t wait to see this sinsemilla.
The little guavas F’s are nice and frosty, producing extremely dense buds on a tiny frame. One smells like white rice cooking, very mild raw garlic, and a hint of jasmine flowers. It’s mild, but I really love the terpenes that it is producing. It’s very unique, I hope it retains the white rice and jasmine flower smell through drying. The garlic and onion allium smell seems very consistent in the offspring of the guava “F” f1 mother. It will be interesting to see what the bx made with the offspring is like.
The other guava f f2 has odd resin that doesn’t feel sticky. just waxy. feels almost like the odd slightly repellent surface of a non-stick coated frying pan. this makes it hard to get a smell off it, but it’s like very mild onion and maybe a hint of turmeric.
4/ 5 of the berry larry have popped tap roots. They opened up on day 4 like clockwork. The 5th seed looked slightly green as it hydrated, so it may be slightly immature compared to the rest. Looks healthy, and the color continued to darken as it hydrated, so I’m thinking it is just a little slower than the rest.
One of the taps looks slightly translucent at the tip, not sure if that is a concern or not. They are looking good to me. the only potential stress so far has been low temperatures. They will be warmer in soil in the tent.
I will germ the remaining 5 this afternoon. I gave them an additional cold snap in the fridge after taking the pack out of storage, so we will see if that makes any difference in their germination timing.
This years outdoor project will be a preservation of bodhi’s neirika seed trust china yunnan dali cangshan mountain sativa landrace collection #6.
(This is the longest strain name I have ever seen.)
Not quite sure how I will journal those yet. I will document them somehow, but I’m not usually able to be as thorough with documentation for the outdoor grow. This journal will probably remain focused on the indoor projects.
interestingly, the maple leaf is much more vigorous when grown from clone. not sure if I have seen that before. The clones are going nuts. I planted 3 cuttings direct in soil in one solo cup, and they all took root. very easy to clone.
I transplanted them into a 5 gallon yesterday, and one of them has already exploded with growth.
The remaining 5 cutting in individual solos are about to become root bound, and will be transplanted soon.
Excellent cloning and rooting characteristics. Only one out of 8 didn’t root, but it is still living. I will cull it soon.
These will take care of my meds for the next grow cycle, along with one or two guava which haven’t been sexed yet.
I will also be doing a selective pollination of the maple leaf (and female guavas if I get any) with Vietnam Da-Lat pollen courtesy of @YoBigdaddy. Should be a very fun indica / sativa f1.
Do you ever just plant the seeds directly in the soil?
I find I get mostly 100% or very close to it by putting them straight into the dirt.
I put them right in the tent with the light on and make sure the temp is at least 80, then put a cup or dome over the seed and actually swivel the cup back and forth so the cup is a bit under the soil, to keep the humidity in there like a seal.
I do plant in soil sometimes, I get really good results planting directly in solos filled with well aerated potting soil.
I learned not to plant directly into no-till pots though, too biologically active. The seeds sometimes get eaten by decomposers, or simply become compost in the mulch layer before they can sprout.
I’ve found that this method with the alternating soaks of hydrogen peroxide solution and lactobacillus serum are helpful at preventing damping off later on. Plus I can keep an eye on their development without the temptation to dig them up and have a look. Sometimes I just can’t help myself, so one of the main reasons I do this is just so I can monitor them and make changes to their environment based on what I see.
Also I find it’s easier for me to maintain the seed soaks than it is for me to maintain a perfect moisture level in soil during germination. I like your dome seal idea. That would also keep out fungus gnats, which are a constant annoyance for me.
the next set of berry larry seeds are soaking. looks like these are still available, although all of ken’s genetics are in very low stock.
holy cow, ken’s seeds are expensive these days. https://www.seedsman.com/en/ken-s-honeydew-10-regular-seeds
this is the one I am most curious about. when I bought mine I was thinking about this one, but went for bay area kush hybrids like the berry larry which have very good predictable medical attributes.
the maple leaf is nearly done. I can see a few dark mature seeds peeking through. I will give it at least a few more days to ensure even seed ripeness. I like the purple tips. This is very faded and overripe, these will finish faster sinsemilla. Hard to tell much about the bud structure because they are so heavily seeded. Smells amazing.
The guavas are getting close. The buds are getting overripe, so the seeds will probably take another two weeks or so to be ready. But it’s hard to say because with the guava they all ripen at once, and it happens suddenly out of nowhere. Some more nice purple tips. Very very dense flowers on these little plants. Good resin production on both. Mild garlic and onion smells.
The guava B turned out to be male. no surprise there, the law of 50/50 dictated that it had a 2 out of 3 chance of being a male. There was no chance of pollination, but I misted it down with lactobacillus serum before chopping just to be safe.
It has been chopped and turned into a big batch of cannabis juice blended with the pure lebanese male. The juice is pretty good, very spicy and bitter, but no aftertaste. Very medicinal for muscle injuries.
Here are the lebanese guava reveg monsters, just starting to flower again. I will defoliate these soon for either cannabis juice or live resin concentrate. The leaves would be usable for juice or hash. It’s not my usual practice, but after the leaf growth during the reveg process, they could use some pruning for light and airflow. There are actually a lot of buds hiding under there.
haha you have no idea hardroc, I still have seeded bud still in jars from the past 3 outdoor seasons.
I have so much work left. I’m trying to give away all the non-selected phenos locally so I won’t have to shuck them.
(disclaimer- it’s legal here to give away bud for free.)
The second round of berry larry seeds are germinating nicely.
2 more berry larry seedlings were planted yesterday, and 2 or 3 more will be ready to plant today.
[edit- 2 seedlings from the first round are up and healthy. Once still has its shell on, the other is perfect. the rest are still hanging out at the soil line. They were planted as soon as the shells started to pop, before they had a taproot. So it’s not surprising that they are moving a little slower than the two that had taps when they were planted. I can see at least one of them has a nice green stem coming out of it, so it will be ready to sprout soon.]
I lost one seed from the first round due to sloppy handling. It looks like a grow helper accidentally disturbed the topsoil on this one, which left the seed right at the surface at the edge of its solo cup.
The seed was open, but didn’t have a taproot. I was tired when I tried to replant it, and my muscular condition was impairing my coordination pretty badly. I accidentally crushed the seed. I try not to be too hard on myself when stuff like this happens, but of course it is disappointing. It’s all just a part of the medical cannabis process.
The grandaddy purp website is down, and looks like ken hasn’t logged into any of his social media in years, and hasn’t been seen in public since before covid began. The price of his seed packs is increasing steadily. Hope he is ok, this is kind of concerning given his condition.
funny video of ken at one of the bay area cannabis cups-
(the audio quality is not good)
[2nd edit / update- I planted the remaining three seeds earlier, one had a nice tap, one had a small tap, and one was just starting to open up at the seam.]
Alright, just read the whole thread (hence the 1000 likes haha). I didn’t even realize you had a thread, I don’t think. Anyway, I’m watching it now. Lots of good info.
