LowDak/Cherry Queen Flower Day -5

Little ones Iā€™m keeping alive until Iā€™m sure I have enough Fems. Pretty darn root bound by nowā€¦

S.A.D.

Different leaf patterns from the SAD, with that fat center leaf. Some of the LD/CQ REEK of burning rubber. I love it. Iā€™m definitely going to be looking for the stinkiest mom here. I really want to pot these up, but only 1-2 are showing sex.

So this is a really cool comparison, because it shows off one of the more unique things that I really love about the Lowland Afghani used in LowDak. Iā€™m getting a really good range of branching structures in these LowDak x Cherry Queen crosses. It makes for a really stellar contrast.

Itā€™s not hard to see. In the top picture, on the left, we can see a lot of branching, that will result in numerous bud sites. On the right, we see something more typical of Afghanis ā€“ very strong apical dominance, coming from the Cherry Queen side.

The really special thing about the Lowland Afghani is that it has a much weaker apical dominance than the typical Afghan. This can be hugely advantageous, especially because it distributes itā€™s bud weight much more broadly. Other than yield, this tends to be better for a number of reasons ā€“ including better resistance to botrytis, and more efficient use of space when plant numbers are of concern.

It is uncommon to have a pure Afghan with apical dominance this low. Itā€™s one of my favorite genetic contributions from the Lowland Afghani side, and probably the biggest reason I let it take the lead as the female in making the polyghani hybrid.

Of course, you can always break the apical dominance by topping the plant. But I think itā€™s better to already have a good branching structure in place.

If the left plant turns out to be a male, I might reveg it and use it later.

Thatā€™s really cool!

The pictures make it a lot easier to know what your talking about to a noob like me in the breeding area lol!

That last bit has been 100% my experience. Iā€™ve never had a monster cola that didnā€™t have at least some little bit of funk, whether from bugs or whatnot.

LowDak/Cherry Queen Flower Day 4

Well Iā€™m an idiotā€¦ I though I had these already in flowering last weekend, but forgot that I actually set it to 15/9. I went out of town and came back and they still werenā€™t showing sex, so I double checked and remembered I was GOING to start them flowering but forgot. DOH.

Well other than losing a week, theyā€™re doing good. I have minimum 9 females to choose from so far. I have seen 4 males as well, one is very branchy and stinky. In general, these have a burnt rubber and soap smell so far. They are quiet intoxicating.

I think Iā€™ve changed my mind and want to go after some pollen. This is gonna strain my tent situation for a couple weeks. I might have to flower some females alongside some males and just live with it.

I have 2 Malawi x Neville Haze that are at about 10 weeks. If things get bad, theyā€™re taking up a lot of space and I might consider chopping them next weekā€¦ about a week early.

I think itā€™ll gonna be worth it. The smells that blast me in the face every time I open the tents have changed my mind. Iā€™m expecting some pretty stellar plants to come out of this.

S.A.D. are in the 2nd picture. Just fat and happy so far. Pretty squat plants next to the LDxCQ.

Since Iā€™m running LDxCQ malesā€¦

Ignore the stickers. Those are cuts from my Panama/Haze mom. Iā€™m keeping her around until I can get some Lebanese pollenā€¦ but as long as Iā€™ve got her, might as well throw some LDxCQ and BDxBA pollen on them.

Should make some really great 50/50 hybrids to give away.

LowDak/Cherry Queen Flower Day 10

Males are gonna stay in small pots, but Iā€™m overloaded on fems. I need to cull it back a bit and get the ones I want to grow potted up pretty soon. Nice spread of phenos. You can see in the 2nd picture LowDak phenos in the top left and bottom right, and CQ phenos in the top right and bottom left.

The male I like best is here (also up front and 2nd from the left in the 1st picture):

Really great stank. Iā€™m getting pretty strong smells off a lot of them. These are some very loud afghanisā€¦ I have a good feeling about this grow.

LD/CQ Male shots

Time to decide on who gets to flower. Lots of decisions to make on females today, and some pruning to do. Pretty decent amount of variation. Final selection are going to be pretty fun!

I have a few males to pick from, but thatā€™s the one Iā€™m heavily leaning toward. Big skunky/soapy smells coming off this guy. It likes to branch and stretch, but stay somewhat compact. Probably less than 2 weeks from first pollen.

Got to see some nice roots today. Some of these are just crushing out the root growth. Theyā€™ll be happier in bigger pots nowā€¦

Flower Day 22

Culled 2 more females the other day to make room for the best plants ā€“ one was an S.A.D., another was a LDxCQ. The last remaining SAD is in the last picture, the rest are LDxCQ.

Males are about to bust, probably will be pollinating this weekend. Some males are tossing a lot of pistils and resin, some are totally clean. I think Iā€™m going to pollinate selective with both. One male has almost hit the top of the tentā€¦

Got a few females already starting to impress meā€¦ Resin on the fans, and barely any bud development yet! I did a bunch of defoliation this week. These mofos are branchy, and I want to see how they do with light to all the nodes in a crowded environment. Mostly just trimmed fans off the central stem to open up the rest.

Itz ok for males to throw out pistolsā€¦? I just killed one with pistilsā€¦

Iā€™m not sure either way. But I will say that the things Iā€™ve read in favor of them come from people who have experience with them. And the things Iā€™ve read against using them comes from people who have no experience with themā€¦

Things Iā€™ve read potentially in favor of them are: higher female to male ratio of offspring, tend to produce resin more often (a trait that seems to be associated with higher resin in female offspring), does not affect sexual stability of females.

Jury is still out for me, but Iā€™m willing to entertain the idea of it not being a negative trait until proven guilty.

Well, I killed mineā€¦but Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a few early pistils he pollinated, also killed a fem of same strainā€¦ I heard that DJ short explained why he uses males with pistils. But didnā€™t do a follow up

No itā€™s not ok for males to throw pistils, male hermed plant.

Really cool project lefthandseeds nothing like making your own seed and growing them. That Durban X Jungle Spice sounds frikin awesome ā€¦

DJ short has said that he actually seeks out those males because they donā€™t seem to produce hermaphrodites in the females, and can have other benefits in females. Iā€™m still cautious of them, but it poses an interesting question about linkage of hermaphroditic traits between sexes.

In my own experience, Iā€™ve grown a ton of JS plants, and males very often present some pistils. And yet Iā€™ve never even seen stamen on female plantsā€¦ which for me is even uncommon because I have light leaks galore. If a plant even thinks about busting a nanner, I think itā€™ll usually happen in my tent.

But if I understand DJs argument, heā€™s getting at the point that femininity in males might even mean stronger femininity in females due to a genetic split in what causes hermaphrodites in each. Kinda makes sense if you consider that hermaphroditic males still canā€™t produce seeds in their own, so it doesnā€™t have the same biological function as in females.
