American Pit Bull Terriers owners thread

Noticing how all the negative Stats being shown are(A) from Ambulance chasers and insurance companies trying to drum up customers… and (B)from last 10 years AFTER the rise in breeding these dogs as opposed to other “agressive” breeds that are now hard to even find ( German Shepherds and Dobermans are all but non-existant in some States!) Read info from the ASPCA, American Veteranary Association…even SOME reputable law firms are now telling the truth: ANY neglected, abused or un-trained dog can and will bite or attack in the wrong circumstances. It’s not about the breed as a whole…but people CHOOSING to selectively breed 2 agressive dogs for fighting purposes…then the unwanted pups end up in shelters…then homes… that’s on BAD BREEDERS not the breed.
Read this…all the info is from the CDC and AVMC

Hey do me a favor, click on that list and see if you notice a trend in breed.

I definitely wouldn’t want my kid around any large aggressive breed. But pits are statistically more dangerous than all other breeds put together. I’m sure the fact that they were bred to fight and kill has nothing to do with that, eh?

Game dogs are fighting dogs. What do you think the “1xw” and “champion” means in the pedigrees?

Anything that looks like a pit gets labeled pit. Most those dogs are not pure bulldog they scatter bred mutts. I agree working dogs and kids alone don’t when unsupervised. You should know your dog. I have one that will protect your kid from me if it thought I was going to hurt them. It’s not as clear cut as your trying to make it. And those statistics ar highly misleading.
But I also have one that’s just to rough for kids so kids are never around him alone And all grown ups know not to give him food from your hand. Throw that shit on the ground.lol

I agree and Wikipedia is not a reliable source, fed and fueled. by the misinformation of others

I look at it this way. We can go round and round all year long on this subject. Throwing page after page of stories and fact. Bottom line If you don’t like the breed don’t get one , those of us that do will continue to keep company with the breed . My pitbulls would die to save my family or my kids and are treated just like one of the family and like I said I have 5 of them

Because if it looks like a pit, it is. If you can’t see the pit in a dog, you aren’t trying.

Whether it’s an amstaff, american bully, staffordshire, APBT, mix thereof…don’t matter. Form always follows function with dogs. Terrier gameness added to bull baiting bloodsport dogs was a mistake. And it’s apparent.

Same umbrella group of extremely closely related (I’d argue the same) breeds doing all the mauling. Again, the american staffordshire is quite literally a renamed pitbull from John Colby. It’s all the same thing. Because they were all bred to do the same thing from the same stock.

People say that, yet every single entry has a source or sources in the footnotes. I’m sure all of the hundreds of entries are wrong, huh? It was probably spaniels that killed all those people.

You’re entitled to your opinion… but I’m basing mine on 30+ years of experience with thebreed as family dogs and legitimate sources such as the CDC…so we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Just say you don’t like. That’s OK but you have know idea wtf you talking about. Probably never owned or seen a game dog in your life. Goodnight all

Did someone you love get attacked? You seem very agressive about this subject and eager to argue with anyone that disagrees.

You trust CDC stats? I got 'em.

Here’s a link to a CDC study from 95-96 (before pits got really popular) and looky here…they’re still doing more killing than any other breed. Pits = 60…more than twice as many as next most dangerous breed, the rottweiler.

@vernal Like others have said… we have our opinions and they are not the same . I posted the study that covered MUCHlonger than one year…and sited multiple sources- but im pretty certain you didnt bother to read it since it doesnt support your views.
Have a nice life dude…I’m not going to argue with you over this any longer because it’s obviously neither is going to change the other’s opinion…it’s like arguing politics or religion…just not worth my time.

Any breed can vicious, pits only get the attention because of dog fighting. Like I said I was attacked by a GOLDEN RETRIEVER … supposed to be a family dog … had to put him down because he started to growl and show his teeth at my son when he was 2 yrs old. Never had any of my pits do anything like that. My nephew jumó off my couch and landed on my oldest males ball …yea I said Balls he yelped and got up and went over and wanted him to pet him. Never growled or showed any signs of aggression my nieces would hang from their ears and pull their tails pinch them. And get licks and kisses in return. So say what you want. With you internet facts , I live by experience . I’ll have pits till I’m In the grave

And yet, only one breed is doing all the killing. Of course your male dogs aren’t neutered…

That sucks about that Golden, but Goldens don’t kill people. I saw a news report once of a “killer golden”…and it was an obvious pit mix. Go figure.

If pits are so safe and goldens so dangerous, how come dogfighters don’t use goldens?

The stats don’t lie. They’re dangerous. Glad nothing ever happened to you. Lots of people aren’t so lucky.

Btw, APBT aren’t the only dogs to be bred to fight there several dogs that were bred to fight and kill animals…

The Akita, the largest of all the Japanese breeds, was originally bred in the province of Akita in the 1600 and was originally developed as a highly successful fighting dog. In the late 19th century however, other breeds were imported into the fighting scene making the Japanese breeds suffer in popularity.

The APBT will always get a bad rep, that’s why I posted this picture, to the public all these dogs are labeled a pit bull but in reality there is only 1 or 2 that is a true pit bull in the picture…

I truly agree, pit bull haters please just move on to another thread…I love the breed and will always have them in my life.

Akitas are dangerous…because they are a fighting breed.

But my neighborhood isn’t full of unleashed Akitas and other rare fighting dogs. Akita owners don’t bring their unleashed dogs to the playground. Akita owners don’t bring their unneutered dogs inside the grocery store with a fake service dog vest. Akita owners know what a muzzle is. Akita owners don’t bring two unfixed males to a water park, choking themselves to try and get at kids. ONLY pit bull owners do that.

There’s zero self-policing and infinite mental gymnastics to say “nooo muh pibbles is so sweet he wouldn’t hurt a fly” when all evidence points to the contrary. I hate how pitbull owners have co-opted the term “reactive” when it’s really just plain aggression.

My neighborhood is full of pit bulls. There’s zero akitas. The shelters aren’t full of akitas. The dogfighters don’t use akitas. Backyard breeders aren’t pumping out litters of akita puppies to sell on facebook. No one has an akita problem. But boy do we have a pit problem.

If they were just confined to the dogfighting world, it wouldn’t be the issue it is. Absolute lowest rate of responsible dog ownership of any breed. How you can watch a dog kill another dog in a pit and then claim “they’re great family pets” is just…wow.
