Badger goes camping with his buddies

Wow you jumped on those boxes fast… they look cool. Very curious to see how they work for you.

I’d say don’t worry about killing everything in the hulls or soil mix. Work on getting everything to work in harmony. If there is a explosion of a certain type of critter, then perhaps see how you can keep them in check… If you’re gonna go organics, I’d think you’d need the life in the soil to help keep everything in balance.

How did that work? Outside?

Yeah outside. Worked great. Just turned the hose on, filled through the tube until there was runoff, and done.

Curious about the questions you posed in the thread last night. Use of teas, topdressing, etc.

For sure. I don’t plan to do anything to the soil. I’m just concerned because I’ve read about pests in rice hulls.

I plan to use a tea for my first watering, so any micros I kill on the mulch will be repopulated anyhow.

I give the soil the first watering with 100C water. It’s lethal.

Do you use living soil?
Edit: that would likely kill all my micros, and I’d have nothing to break the nutes down.

yah I have a swath of organic farming outside and some smaller plants inside. I just don’t grow weed with living soil, that’s all.

You can definitely use teas, and top dressing is recommended in those boxes. Only use teas from the top though, and not down the tube, and only use sparingly. The Build-A-Soil on YouTube videos break down their use pretty well, look for their video series in the 10x10. He’s comparing Earthboxes (similar to what Badger got), 10 gallon smart pots and a 3 x 3 no-till bed. Will be interesting to see the final results.

I call 'em living soiler boilers. I made that name up when I saw them cooking the ground in the organic greenhouse.

Here’s a hint at what I’m up to. Once I seal these homemade sight glasses up, I’ll be good to go.

These should be perfect to fit the 4x4. I’m probably gonna lose the wheels.

This should be interesting.
