18/28 made it, and not one of them is Bubba Kush. Such a bummer, but oh well. I’ve got plenty of work ahead of me just doing these seed runs, so maybe it’s for the best I’m working with a smaller number of plants. Speaking of which, I can’t wait to find my parent plants and announce the seed run for the SSSDH F3s. Like officially announce it, not just talk about it here to y’all.
I’m so stoked to have these beans! Big thank you to OG Chronix for the super early morning giveaway last week! Finally, finally, FINALLY got my hands on some Johnny PotSeed gear, and I gotta tell you, I’m so excited to run all 3 of these. Alien OG is one of my all time favorites, so that NL5 crossed to Alien OG, and the AOG F2s are both on the short list and will likely get popped with the next round.
Because…
I’m switching to photos for awhile. I’ll still be running autos at all times, but they won’t be the bulk of my crop for the next year or two. I’ve had, and have, some really amazing photoperiod stuff fall into my collection over the past couple months, so I’d like to get into them and see what I can find. Between the fire beans that VAkish sent me, and these amazing JPS beans, I’ll be lucky not to need a fire extinguisher next to my tents.
I went to a different hydro store than the shop I usually go to, looking for a decent organic super soil. That’s right y’all, I’m going back to organic growing. I started with it, and know now that I shoulda stayed with it. It’s so hard to source anything decent for growing where I live, especially things mostly used for growing cannabis. I have yet to meet an old gardener around here that can even pronounce the word “mycorrhizae”, let alone know that a soil food web has nothing at all to do with spiders. Seriously, I had that conversation with the old guy working the garden section at Menards last spring.
So I found what I hope is a good “water only” super soil. It’s called Great Lakes Water Only by Detroit Nutrient Company, or something like that. It’s more nutrient dense than some other OSS, (I’m looking right at you, Michigan Made Mix, aka M3 ) which was the biggest issue I had when using M3 in the past. I’m thinking it should hold up for all but the longest flowering cultivars if I transplant into the OSS and flip right away. If I don’t burn up half the available nutrients by vegging in the soil for 3-4 weeks, I shouldn’t need to add too much in the way of top dresses. Which I did pick up, just in case. It’s called Pride Lands and its NPK ratio is 2-5.5-5.5. It’s not a soluble nutrient, so I’ll need to scratch it in, no biggie.
I also picked up some cloning supplies, and ordered a tray + T5 light which should arrive Monday. Since I’m switching back to OSS I grabbed a bag of Root Riot plugs. I’ve never used them, but I’ve seen TONS of people talk about how they have good success using them, so I feel confident with them. I also got a small jar of CloneX gel, and a bottle of clone/seedling liquid nutrients. So hopefully I’m set up right for a good time with these photo strains. I’m gonna practice cloning with this auto Northern Lights that I’ve got going, just to see if I can do it and to be able to say I successfully cloned an autoflower. That feels like an achievement, to me, and I’d feel like shit if I moved on from autos without getting it done. Plus it’d be nice to have a little extra NL bud when all is said and done.
Okay, wow. That was a long one. I overslept this morning and didn’t get outta bed til almost 6:00, so my brain still hasn’t settled down from the rush of WTFs that hit me when I realized how late I slept. Shit happens, I guess 🤷
