Bodhi Guide - Seed and Strain Discussion (Part 1)

I just wanna say that we should consider the purpose of someone’s methods before integrating into our workflows.

Bruce is primarily concerned with biomass in commercial hemp production. Their goal is increased biomass, secondary metabolites being… Secondary.

You can drive up all inputs to match light intensity, or you can just drop light intensity so metabolism matches feed rate.

I find that the harder the plants are driven, the worse the smoke quality. This seems to be because of an increase in nitrogen tissue formation, increasing the N:Carbon tissue ratio.

Elevated CO2 reduces transpiration rates and increases N based tissue formation. Not good imo.

To mimic HPS we need to match light intensity, match the IR induced transpiration, and make up for loss of waste heat functioning to remove latent heat, aka add dehu.

So we need to increase transpiration, not decrease with CO2.

Increased nutrient concentration in media creates osmotic stress on the root and decreases transpiration.

It’s definitely not temp related. I’ve had plants in a greenhouse that got to 125 degrees and didn’t have any herm issues. It’s got to be genetics 1st, with the right environment to trigger the gene.

Things like altitude, pressure, temperature, light intensity, humidity, etc. are different things plants become accustomed to. I’m sure after X generations the plants’ genes start to adapt to their environment. When you take those genes and put them in a new type of environment, the genetics “freak out” and try to ensure their survival, thus herming out.

That’s my bro science lesson (guess).

Isn’t that technically the true meaning of pheno type…same plant grow in different environments displaying different growth patterns? Genotype deals with dna/genetic types

I apologize for starting a storm of negativity. I wasn’t trying to trash bodhi or anyone’s preferences. bodhi is by far my favorite breeder both for his no-hype style and his methodical approach to breeding cool stuff. He consistently offers some of the most incredible strains at rock bottom prices, and he does it without any fanfare or bullshit.

Also, it’s cool that you wanted to gift that clone out @advancedbuffalo . Thank you for your generous offer to the community!

The Snow Lotus line is a 12 or 15 year old line. A lot of people loved it over the years. I don’t think the availability of heirloom or elite clones make that line obsolete - my experience with buying and trading clones is that most of them are not very special.

Weed seems to be a very personal experience. One person’s junk is another person’s treasure, but all experiences are valid.

In fact, now that I’ve been able to buy or trade for a lot of the old elite cuts, my experience with bodhi’s strains is that his crosses are often better than the original moms, and sometimes WAY better. My favorite cuts are his work or derivatives of his work.

We’re each entitled to our own opinions. As for mine, I disagree completely with the bolded part of your statement. bodhi lines are not obsolete at all. Each male brings different things to the table, just the same as every breeder’s males or pollen donors. I happen to really like the few strains I’ve tried from the SSDD and Wookie males, as well as the Appy & 88g13hp lines which I have more experience with. I only tested 2 OMG crosses and 2 SM crosses, neither of which were good, but I’m willing to give them another shot. Then you’ve got the kashmir and gold star males as well as some of the newer flavor and heirloom stuff that sounds incredible.

As @anon60559124 and a few others have said, opinions on the internet should be taken with a grain of salt, mine included. When running $25 (bogo) or $35 (b2g1) bodhi packs, pop things that speak to you and then make a few F2 to explore the line further - often they’re building blocks. Or just pop what looks good on IG and speaks to you. You’re almost guaranteed to find something really good, and often something incredible in each pack. That’s been my experience, anyway.

But, I think you have to be cool with them not fitting the current mold of elite looks or terps - be open to extreme possibilities and they will find you. If you’re just hunting for something that will look good in pics and sell well, you’re going to be frequently disappointed. But, if you’re looking for weed that smokes great, you will usually find something fantastic in each pack of bodhi seeds.

To summarize my experience - most of the clones you can buy aren’t very special, and they’re all at least double the price of a bodhi pack, often quite a bit more. If they’re hyped on IG, clones are generally not very good.

Conversely, most of the bodhi packs I’ve run have had unique keepers, sometimes more than one. Sadly, being a life long renter, I haven’t been able to keep any long term. But, I’m looking forward to the day when I can!

I do run my lights in flower at a greatly reduced power level and I also go with a ten hour flower period over twelve hours. I learned this the hard way over the last two years. I will say the Bodhi strains I have grown take the light better than the other strains from seed I have grown.

I care about quality over quantity. I also do not use salt fertilizers with my soil. I am in the process of learning how to cultivate the plant we all love to get the best quality with my abilities. I have learned a lot from people here and on discord as I grow my abilities.

I’ve really enjoyed looking through F2’s of Bodhi’s gear. Much more so than the majority of F1’s I’ve ran from him. Not to say anything against the F1’s, but the F2’s are treasure boxes for sure!

Those genius’s look really great.
The more i research the A11g and its offspring, the more people i notice growing with it.

Im trying to decide if it is easier to find the genius pheno in a cross, like bodhi’s mindfullness or endor score, or if i should start digging into apollo reproductions, like mota rebel’s apollo 13 f4 (genius x p75) Any reccomendations on where to start? (Or if anyone has genius seed or cuts available please LMK)

As an engineer and a general maker of things, the “mind fire” that ive heard the effects described as really get me excited.

Totally agree with you on all points, probably should have chosen a different word to use rather than obsolete. Sorry!!

I wasn’t really trying to use it in a negative way, more just saying people aren’t digging into them for their original purpose. The males are still absolutely worth hunting, they are just going to be a deeper dive than anticipated. Seems like their “target” expressions are a little rarer on the male side vs their sister counterparts.

I have found blips of greatness in the Wookie 15 crosses. Oddly… Root beer terps in the Phone Home herm that I pissed everyone off with on RIU lol. Not some GMO rootbeer BS, actual Coca Cola/root beer flavor to hash. If it didn’t have 30 nanners per cola it would have been a serious keeper.

Monarch and Red Eye Jedi both get two thumbs up. I prefer monarch for its stretched out structure and some neato berry terps here and there. I prefer the smoke of my best Red Eye Jedi, tastes like Kosher Kush but creamier on the back

This is very interesting idea. My buddy brings this guy up a lot. I assumed he had the same goals as me, which is wrong

i think where a lot of people went wrong, myself included, with Snow Lotus was everyone was trying to scoop up Kush x SL varietals when really in retrospect and seeing them grown throughout the years, the Blueberry types x SL and the Sativa types x SL look so much more appealing and looked like they meshed better. When the SL hype was big, NLD’s really weren’t. Everyone wanted OG and Chem and all the elites you can find easier today.

I dunno. That’s just kind of how I look back at it all lol.

Totally agree! I think that’s where outdoor shines anyway. Those bigass trich heads can make insane hash. When I ran deps, it was all about those strains that would look like indoor! And even then, most strains still looked like outs. Thats my conspiracy why Gelatos got so popular. They run so well in deps and look like indoor lol

But even back in the 2010s when I was making lots of hash from full term growers all over the state, those bodhi lines always made the most primo hash. Way better highs than all the boring cookies stuff. But to be fair, isnt field grown for hash the most traditional way to grow? I often dream of growing a field of Snow Lotus for mountains of hash lol

As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. Seed buying is no exception.

Will be awhile before I get to them but I’m excited to try some silver lotus and dragonfruit f2s I think will be cool to compare the two ssh cuts with sl

Yeah, I’ve been hunting through clones almost exclusively for 3 years now and I won’t disagree with that. There’s some gems, but it’s all subjective anyway.

I suppose my point could better be made with an example. I’ve been hunting for Dumpster for a while, an Ohio heirloom cut. I bought a pack of Bodhi’s Garfunkel (Dumpster x Ghash) hoping to find a Dumpster leaner way before I got into cuts. I’ve grown enough Ghash crosses to have a decent idea what to look for. Now I’ve got a solid lead on the Dumpster cut. I wouldn’t have bought the seeds if I had the cut. But a time will come when I plan to preserve the Dumpster in seed form, and you best believe I’ll hunt through that pack for a good male to bx with.

I really do respect Bodhi’s work. I hope not to appear otherwise. I’m especially excited for his landrace x landrace projects.

Damn so what were you running that hashed well from Bodhi? I’ve washed Bodhi and Doc D stuff run indoors and see the same thing, way more medicinal hash than what is hot on the market.

I’m seeing heads all over the place harvesting these Ghash crosses, really curious to see how they perform for rosin.

The longest I grew any of those Apollo 11 f4’s was 52 days (I think?), just because, like you said, they looked pretty dang done even at day 49. What do you like about it at 60 days as opposed to 50? I still have a pack of those, which is why I’m asking haha. All of the ones I’ve grown so far had the “rotting pineapple/cheetos” thing going on, Bodhi was dead-on in his description of the smell, but I didn’t find any of the plants to be the “Sativa mind fire” that he mentioned. I really liked them, but even chopped at 49 days they all smoked a little heavier than I was hoping for. Not “heavy” heavy, but not really “mind on fire,” either haha.

Yeah, only one of the ones I grew didn’t have that zig-zag meristem. The one that didn’t also wasn’t nearly as floppy as the ones that did. I’m assuming she was a C99 leaner. The zig-zag thing is pretty cool-looking, though.

I’m excited by the resin content of DLA16. Just brushing up against it lightly creates enough resin to where now I have to clean my hands. Not the goo fest of dream beaver but it is early. This is just 1 month in. I am wondering what combining the DLA16 with Kashmir Azad would create. Or Snow Lotus X Kashmir. I think all these cookie washers are deceiving too cuz the high usually is shit on them. They look great in a bag and yield high for concentrate.

Someone else echoed this awhile back and I can’t remember who. But I’ve heard nothing but good about the sativa types x SL. Including the Blue Lotus that uses a sativa type DJ Blueberry.
Thanks for sharing your observations.
