Dendro's Outdoor Grow 2022

Have made some real progress in the garden so far this year, so very happy to see that many others are as well.
Hard won experience and deep thoughts with Baumead and friends have made the journey that much more simplistic as of late. We naturally go with the flow around here as well as pick up all the much appreciated, generous nuggets, sometimes whole scriptures of knowledge along the way from all you willing to give it away OGs.

What comes around, go’s around, for sure.

Blessings from the Appalachians and remember to get in where you fit in, folks, and try to spread them baskets and eggs out for hopeful all year harvesting!

The current containers of DIY compost have a few months to go now. For these, almost EVERYTHING goes in those bins! I do try to separate what I want to go into veg and flower times. We empty the vacuum in there, so nasty as it sounds, human skin cells, and other weird stuff vacuums pick up.
From our many fish tanks and animals kept, lots of reptile guano, fish emulsions, and even some canine hair goes in those disgusting, yet somehow beautiful revolving bins of organic plant growing materials. A bunch of dead aquarium plant matter really seems to be a key ingredient.
Once its fully decomposed, I empty the contents into my beds and bag up some of the sludge(its more of a dry, dark, slightly moist consistency by then) for later top dressing indoors, but again, only once its fully and I mean fully composted. Ive learned to leave about a third of the old stuff in every time to help kick off the new stuff added and its looking to be some top quality mix from the lush green of the early spring garden and outdoor autos going up top so far. We let the last loads of compost sit for a good year or two, hard to remember now, I wish I had kept better notes but goodish judgment works out fairly well in my experience, eventually at least and I can usually remember most of what Ive done that works for me and what doesnt.

I still have a very rudimentary understanding of all this and somehow, its finally all starting to click. Good year or not, we’re learning! Keepin at it and glad to see all the homies are too!

Perseverance, Humility, and Resiliency.

Stay Safe Fam and Happy Growing

Are these trunk/root trophies from last season? I unceremoniously tossed mine in the informal compost pile of weeds.

This. For sure!

Glad to see you again, time to get ready for bed here I’ll have to take another read tomorrow.

Hey Dendro, Bobo,
Lovely pics! I saw this years (for us) hummingbirds hit the front porch feeder, the other day. Usually by June, I can stand beside the feeders, being real still, and they will come in to feed.
Many times, they will fed, then fly right up to me, going left, then right, just looking, just a few inches away at times.
I must be on their wave length, them and dogs.
Love your area, garden, plants, compost area!! I got my first bucket of dinosaur vomit, cooking out back, as the next collection bucket fills up.
I’m yanking the wire cage, pulling off the uncomposted layer, dig out a wheel barrel or 2 of the base, that killer rich soil gold, repack it, and dump the DV onto it.
I’ll compost all this winters harvested stalks, and dried leaf matter, root balls as the first layer, and bag up the lawn mower grass clippings. The pile will be hot in a day or 2 after that.
It’s spring again!!

Yes brother! Glad you enjoy our hard won trophies/root balls of both past losses/victories.
I had recently discovered them in some other outdoor brush, they had also been ‘unceremoniously’ tossed aside, yet I happened to find them all dried out and ready to be mounted. They definitely spruce up the place Id say.
First of many, Alien Gods Willing.

Speaking of blessings, Many thanks for the much needed motivation and encouragement this winter my friend, Let the Spring Rituals begin for us All and very greatful we’re still very early yet this season.

So far, we’ve had some easy going auto plants chugging along and even some early veggie harvests lately, as well as the usual not so easy breezy indoor plants that I just barely seem to manage till the end, but it all does seem to eventually work out, so we count our many blessings. Very greatful to be back outside with you and the many other members, known and unknown, from our one of a Kind Tribe.

Currently, Im hesitant on switching back over to photo-periods outdoors, I know I’ve got to try my hand again eventually, though the ptsd ghosts of the god awful surprise(for me at least)Powdery Mildew from last season continues to test my faith and confidence. I believe that I have a healthier and more complete soil than last year as well as a few chunks of that rudimentary knowledge and understanding hopefully learned on the specific issue, for starters, I think I need to switch out the bamboo rods that are part of my trellis, they seem to simply be mold making and collecting rods themselves, slowly breaking down with an obvious unknown film, really makes up my mind to see this in print haha, I like the look of them and sure wish I could keep everything all natural but since I cant be sure if they would cause any issues with cannabis as well as how they will hold up over time, I dont want to take any chances, better to just use pvc pipe or similar, something that stays cleanish instead of slowly rotting away which Ill have to fix eventually anyway. Sounds like Ive got it all cut out for me now. Great talk bro! :joy:

Just like old times! Rambling mode engaged…cheers!

Thanks for that, I agree brother and always good to see ya!
Judd was definitely a bad ass pup! I love him! Very happy to know ALL dogs go to heaven. Ive always had a dog, really wish they lived longer but nothing beats giving them an awesome life and spending as much time as we can with truely happy animals. Bobo just got his spring bath and after the initial hatred wore off, he’s very greatful and looking/feeling a new man!

I need to catch up on your thread but I pray all is well with you and your garden. Heading over in a bit…Happy Heady Spring!

Oh yeah, hummingbirds are just so freaking cool man! We’ve had a few feeders set up and seen/brought in a lot of them over the years. The first ones I remember seeing in my life were very large dark colored ones in Venezuela. I remember I could literally hear their wings beating.
Now you’ve inspired me to get another feeder going, thank you! Ive only had a few get close to me like that but maybe setting some feeders up in the woosaa garden would help with that.

…You just reminded me of the young male Cardinal that was recently trapped in one of the unused outdoor dog kennels.
He had gotten in but couldnt figure out how to get out so I went in to set him free.
Such a great feeling and it was really cool to have an experience with a beautiful bright bird like that, so close up. He wouldnt fly out no matter what I did and it was getting dark, didnt want a cat or something to get him, so I decided I had to grab him and the litttle punk bit the shit out of me when I finally did very gently palm him, I didnt blame/hurt him, Im very used to getting bitten by reptiles and other animals but I was shocked at the time that he could bite that hard, now I know Cardinals can crack nuts, and fingers, open with ease.

And yes, it is never too late to start our very own DV collection, so true, getting everything properly ‘cooked’ is certainly key for ph and other potential issues yet its all very easy and quick to do once we get started. Ive been taking a couple cups of my complete compost, bagging it in a large ziplock, and adding many tablespoons and teaspoons of various ingredients to then further break down and increase the nutrient yeild specifically for top dressing during both veg and flower. Its taking some time, trials and tribulations, but the experiments are certainly beginning to pay off. Thank you so very much for your always wise and encouraging words and shared wisdom.

Cant say it enough, Very thankful for ALL of you OGs out there!

It’s getting going! Feels good to be back outside again working on plant stuff. The patio is pleasant to sit and smoke on in the evenings, hummingbirds are back, it’s about to be summer again :grinning:

I had considered that the bamboo shoots I used last season could be problematic in terms of mold. Thought about picking up some of the plastic-coated ones like you did, but I have some time to think about it. I don’t think in my case there was contribution, but I started to be very careful which ones were already used on other plants so I didn’t spread anything if there was disease or something. Paranoia probably. I’ve got a pile of the used ones that’ll probably get tossed away or composted. Where’d you get your plastic ones? At least you can sterilize them each season.

Regarding the photoperiod thing, I’m pretty sure you’re about as likely to get PM on a photo as you are an auto. I think it’s one of those things, learn to recognize it and handle it, and keep blazin’ :cowboy_hat_face:

Your plants are looking great in their autopots.

How are those tupperwares working for composting? Do you have any vent holes? I’ve been looking into getting some going better, as usual reading a bunch and trying to figure it out before getting started. Most of what I’ve read is all about aeration - ventilated container, stirring to keep it from going anaerobic. Probably just because aerobic is more nutritious and more palatable to us that’s what I’ve been looking at. Interesting comment on the vacuum cleaner dumping, curious about that.

Now I’m more seriously thinking about building a compost bin setup. I think I’m inclined to go the worm castings route, with stacked bins that I can cycle for a continous “harvest.” The “Teaming with Microbes” book has several chapters about compost, worms, and the huge benefits of both together. Quite literally a whole can of worms.

Those are really, really frosty. My eyeballs are getting sticky just from looking at the pics. Very nice. I bet they kicked ass.

I’ve seen a couple of box turtles on our mountain, and we’ve already been visited by a garter snake. The anoles are out in force, too. The anoles don’t even run unless I get within about a foot of them. The birds (brown thrushes) don’t even fear us anymore. They’ve even built a nest at eye level in a shrub next to the raspberries. I’ve gotten within 3 feet of them before they fly away. They fly about two feet, and keep watching.

On the other hand, summers there are glorious. Constant daylight with tens of thousands of salmon running, along with all the trout and grayling that follow them. I’ve literally bagged my daily limit of trout and salmon inside of half an hour in some places, with most of that time being spent landing the fish. Trout and salmon fight like hell. Trout like to jump, while salmon like to get deep and head toward the strongest current. We’re talking about 20-pound fish (some salmon can get up to 70, with the largest ever recorded being about 120 pounds) with the muscle to swim hundreds or thousands of miles upstream to spawn. They’re very strong. And tasty. Good lord, they’re tasty. It was funny that people pay a lot of money for fresh salmon, while I had a hard time giving it away up there. Yet another reason Alaska is a very strange place.

Coolness. It’s always cool when you find a tortoise. The birds are eating my strawberries and raspberries, but no too many of them. I consider what the critters take “nature’s share.” My purple holy basil project is going better than I ever dared dream. 5 of the purple holy basil seeds I harvested last year have sprouted so far, and 4 of them are purple. Only one was green.

Nice wild roses. Those pop up around here, and it’s always cool. I found some really unusual honeysuckle. The flowers are yellow and white, but the outside of the calyx is a deep red. I’ve never seen any like it anywhere else. I got some cuttings and two survived.

Hmmm…that honeysuckle sounds rad! Please post pics if ya can. We love seeing rare and unusual finds. And now you got me thinking…
I found a patch of ‘Ghost Pipes’ last year, probably one of the rarer finds for me over the years, I didn’t know what it was and for some reason I did not look it up, then I happened across a youtube video on them the other day(damn youtube videos giving away ancient secrets) and it all came back…and luckily I snapped a few photos last year and now Im keeping an eye on the patch over the next month or two…

Cool, huh? a.k.a. the vampire plant!

Congrats on the purple holy basil project btw, its so satisfying to see the hard work pay off and actually prove out. Would love to see those too. We are getting there with the male/female autoflower project, I believe we finally have some ‘full auto’ seeds of our own now, three new sets and all at technically f1, believe it or not, so we’ll have to see how they come out eventually. A lot of key points Ive read on breeding autos has turned out to be either false or misleading IMHO, though I try to remember that everything is always evolving and new things do happen. In the end, Im looking for big plants that do well outdoor, no sacrificing for flavor or desired effects, and are finished before most folks even start seeing flower. Then I can really chill with the photos and say good by to stressin over PM and the like. Im sure all the boogies will show up, Im counting on them!

Here is a shot of an f1 Banana Berry Muffins x El’Chemi Kiwi flowering right along side the two full autos from Mephisto.(Forgotten Cookies and Northern Cheese Haze x Forum Stomper) not saying this proves anything, just adding it to the pile of surprises and plot twists. Im sure someone will tell us whats really going on here…

All plants started on the same day, same conditions. There is definitely a difference in the overall shape, and the degree of how fast they flip over from veg, but man, the photo x auto project is teaching me tricks and I hope that some of the info here helps anyone else on the quest to summer time buds.

Ohh, and this last one is actually why I got on today, I thought of both you and @FieldEffect when I found this newborn this morning, Eastern Box Turtle, right next to the equally very, very tiny and delicate blueberry cutting that is just barely making it through the heat. Im thinking next year Ill get some good growth on the berries. Except for the strawberries, good God do those white All Stars take off fast! Ohh, geeze, got to hit the Manual override button…Disengage ramble mode, now! Ok, my bad, here are those turtle shots…

What a Morning! And all this while I was ‘planting’ some flying saucer spawn in the old wood pile…oops…wrong thread…I didnt say that…

Hopefully all these post, instead of just giving up, Ill give it another go this time if something doesn’t show up. Usually, I just get frustrated and throw my phone into the woods for another couple of weeks.

Well, I sure hope you guys and the entire Fam is loving this sumer weather and all the new life that comes with it. Love yall!
Now Im off to see what’s good in da hood…
