Feminized Seeds , Whats Your thoughts!?

I disagree , i have grown many fem and regular beans ( and auto’s indoors) and i have had a keeper from a freebie : fem blueberry ghost og but my present keeper is a reg seed …
I would grow fem anything if i like the strain/cross, plus some people don’t have room to root out the males etc… There is a place for both… and auto’s can give massive yields these days ( and potent too.!)
So each to their own. Nothing wrong with running them all.

Fems are better for people with limited grow space. Plant 4 seeds in a 4x4 tent it’s better to know 100% are going to be female. If you have the luck I’ve got youd plant 4 regs and end up with 4 males ffs. It takes around 4 to 5 weeks for them to show sex so that would be a full month lost, power bills for nothing and unessesery work. I’ll always grow a couple of feminised seeds to ensure I’ve at least produced something :+1:

Im with you brother. My cousin grew feminized seeds one time, two weeks from harvest, BAM! Herpes. He hasn’t grown a feminized plant since.

Holy shit, you can get herpes from feminized seed? :scream:

One bad experience does NOT provide exclusive proof that fem seeds are commercialised bagseed - they’re IS a big market for fems and always will be now…!
Im NOT claiming fem are better but there are good and bad regs too , it’s not as simple as generalising ALL fem as commercial bagseed,!
commercial ; definitely .! , but so are regs bred for commercial reasons…
Try a strain you have grown regs of in fem version and see for yourself .?
I have been growing fems and regs for a bit and iv only had an auto hermi on me… most fems don’t herm ( ime)…

I agree there are good and bad feminized seeds. A good breeder will eliminate the intersex tendencies long before releasing them. A bad breeder may circulate a cut as “elite” that was accidentally pollinated (bag seed).

There is a little merit to the idea that eliminating males from the gene pool is a limitation. This is the same as eliminating any off types and can be countered with additional numbers. All line breeding will narrow the gene pool.

That being said, I gave away most of my feminized seeds. Not really because I think they are inferior, but because another user here needed them.

I am not debating growing feminized seed purely for smoking. That would be the preferred method if you are just needing medicine.

I am talking about breeding and preserving genetics.

From an evolutionary perspective, especially in the case of wild organisms, you are absolutely right. Dioecious species are irrefutably more resilient than Monoecious in many cases, orchids are a great example.

Cannabis is more controlled by human decisions than natural factors tho, imho.

I think fems have their place, in my case with micro growing I’ve generally create a mum out of a nice plant and usually clone.

That being said things go wrong and I’ve lost a few mums over the last couple of years and if I was to reverse a cut and then make some fems ide have some backups.

Also taking cuts, waiting for them to root and then plant, wait to recover and start growing takes time. When ready for the next lot of plants, fem seeds planted and grown would be quicker than cuts.

Just my thoughts.

I’ve bought a few feminized seeds, never had issue. I do think auto-flowering loses something however when they play with those genetics. Personally, i’m a cloner so feminized seeds allow me to take clones before i kick them to bud

Only thing autoflowers really lose is an ability to continuously veg to a good size and an ability to bounce back from stress issues i.e.: transplanting, watering, general ph issues…

Otherwise fem auto is a good run to be in

I found auto to be too spread out and too thin buds, just my opinion though, I did like them for awhile. This is a photo of a pinapple express auto that didn’t root right. The only one of 5 to survive. Auto also can’t be reverted or cloned.

Once I’ve finished growing out the seeds Ive been gifted I will be growing feminized photoperiod only. My male to female ratio from regs has been 25% female to 75% male. Maybe I’m just unlucky. I dunno if its just me but I’ve found that autos loose the strong smell once harvested compared to my photo grows.

The problem is the “breeder” not the type of seed.

  1. Any true female will not Hermie or even show male traits.
    a. Unfortunately some strains will show male tendencies in late flower. Also, some strains can be stable in one situation and unstable in others. Ex. I have a green crack clone that never in 4 years showed male traits, I have it to someone and it Hermed. ( He ran 12on 5off 1 on 6 off :astonished:)

  2. Feminized seeds when done correctly are of equal potency and character of the non feminized seed.

I buy female seeds when I don’t need a male. But good feminized seed can be used with male pollen to create good seed also. The key is the genetic stability of the mom. Unfortunately anyone can make feminized seeds thus the influx of non stable genetics.
