What would be the best micron bag to use to get medium yield and medium quality?
Can I expect at least some crystals to make their way through the 120 micron?
Pretty sure you just slap it in the 220 and let it rip over the mirror. That’ll max out the yields probably get some plant fibers.
@SHSC-1 let’s not forget, the Old World Hash was stored for a LONG time before we ever got our hands on it. Also, Frenchy pointed out that after pressing, rolling into Temple Balls, and stashing away, that the hash transforms. It produces upwards of 55 different compounds that are still being studied and were not present before pressing and tucking away. I wish the folks that were investigating this with Frenchy would post more of the study’s they did or are doing.
Not taking anything away from @JoeCrowe at all, he’s also taught me a shitload.
Between Frenchy and Joes methods, I’ve got a container full of Hash, each with its distinct signature.
I haven’t quite gotten the “freeze dry” totally correct. I can’t get it to chop into little bits like Joe, but after taking my pile from the freezer, running a cycle through the Cannatrol it turns a real nice amber that will break up into a grainy sand structure, roll into a snake for joints, or melts nicely in my pipe just breaking a piece off the chip.
Each method has its own taste, high, and burn.
I’m currently storing my hash in my Cannatrol, and to me, it’s the cats ass for storing long term.
Either method smokes for a long time in my cheap $7 pipe, but the taste stays longer in my frozen than a pressed temple ball for me.
The nice thing is, pack that cheap $7 pipe, and I can smoke either method for damn near 2 weeks and I stay fried all day and all night.
I’ve learned a lot, still learning, still trying different drying techniques and experimenting.
I can’t thank @JoeCrowe or Frenchy(RIP) enough for showing me different styles and techniques and ending up with Hash that I really enjoy, and folks won’t leave me alone about.
wait, have you actually made live extracts?
The thing about the process I use is that it’s the industry standard method for making extracts in my neck. fresh buds → freeze dried bubble hash → live rosin
Except they are using freeze driers and hash extraction machines.
I’m not sure why people are still making hash like I did when I was 20. I’ve rejected those ways, and moved on with my life. hahhah I know my ruminations are probably offensive, but I wonder why…like… stick to old school methods?
ay caramba
I can’t come to think of the Cannabis flower as a “contaminant”, brother and I have no clue WTF Bubbleman is doing with a laptop & decarbing vessel
Some of us are stuck in Boof Mode on Planet Schwag. Not proud of it, jus sayin’
Sir, the peasants are revolting. You said it, they stink on ice!
There’s still going to be an appreciation for traditional techniques. I make rosin from freeze dried water hash a few times a year but I personally prefer cured pressed hash from dry sift. I also love a good hand rubbed (the original live resin).
The same as an old school handmade rye whisky. Or textiles made with traditional equipment/methods. Any artisanal craft. Everyone has preferences and I’m always an advocate of refining one’s craft, but the new hash rosins are a great addition, not a replacement.
Ok, so what is good about it though?
Which micron size bag catches the best heads depends on strain, but that’s usually when using water. I agree with Joe, 220 with dry ice if using one bag. Be sure to clear the resin every 30 seconds or so and you’ll be able to tell what grade is coming out by the color.
This is 120m dry ice hash from trim and fresh buds. Put in freeze uncovered for about 2 wks then covered pull little amounts out for daily smoking. Not sure if goof form but hey it works!
I also got a nice pile running some through 73 but no pics. Just took this pic
I’m all about using fresh frozen buds, no other way IMO. I’ve grown for many many moons, hash just wasn’t in the cards until a few years ago, and like most folks, Google, YouTube, and research what the inter web kicks out was where I started. Then discovered OG, your threads, and it changed my whole perspective on hash making.
I’ll never dry, rehydrate and wash ever again, I think there’s too much lost taste and high wise, you just don’t get all the nuances that fresh frozen produces.
Then watched your freeze drying method, watched you bring home the Unicorn Cup, and it really intrigued me, so had to change the way I dried my bubble.
I haven’t gotten mine to the white powder consistency you get @JoeCrowe, but I’m working on it, the way I’m drying now, doesn’t produce the Black, but a nice Golden Amber.
I took the same strain, processed at the same time, (have 2 washers because after drilling holes at work all day, can’t hold and use one at the house) but dried using both techniques, and the taste and high profiles are very different IMO.
I’ll take my freeze then finish dry in the Cannatrol any day over air drying, pressing, balling up and storing.
I guess you could say I’m kind of using a “hybrid” technique, freezing a fresh run pile for a few weeks, then finishing in the Cannatrol, a little of both drying styles. I’m just not pressing it out with a hot bottle and tucking it away.
I still like the old style hash, not knocking it one bit, nothing wrong with it, I just happen to like the hybrid method I’m using, the taste and high are much better to me IMO.
Thank you for an actual answer…lol
I’m really considering getting a cannatrol. I hear so many good things about the machine.
I wasn’t trying to say the way i am doing things is better , I was just pointing out that aging/curing the hash is not “a bad idea” .
As i read through the earlier posts I realized that this is more of a modern method of hashmaking here in this thread and I was’t trying to take away from that.
HOLY SHART @SHSC-1 !!!
Lol. Dark meat has the best rump!
OKAY so as an update for everyone here’s what happened!
Okay… as this was my first time ever making bubble hash, and it’s out of seed run dust collected over 3+ years I don’t feel to bad about this. I also only used 1/2 of the total dust mass so I can do this again with another bag of ice.
All items needed put together. This will be the same way i’ll use the washing machine with the fresh-frozen but wanted to get my shit together with this old trim first sans the washer and instead a 5gallon fish tank!
I’m only using 220 and 73 bags. Next round may be 220 (junk to toss), 120 (1st collection) 73 (second collection), 25 (third collection). I’m hesitant to use the 25 because fuck it too much work principles.
Cut buckets hold the bags, three 4" holes at the base of the full bucket for drainage into the 74L bin.
The goods waiting for it’s bath.
Up close.
I tossed 1/2 off the dried plant mass into the tank, then 1/2 of the ice and covered this with cold water. I then added the rest of the ice and then added cold water with 1" clearance from the top of the tank.
With a hand-mixer I went back and forth agitating the mass on low for 10 freaking minutes.
It looked like the worst ice-tea ever when I was done, the tank opaque with cold.
The plant mass soaked up water and floated to the top leaving a sludge at the bottom unseen through the deep brown of the horror water.
I scooped off the plant mass and kept it aside as I’m gonna freeze it to process again when I have more ice.
Then I strained the liquid with a small section of hose into the bag assembly.
Once the tank was empty, I flushed it with cold water and poured the wash out to join the siphoned mass. This meant plenty of water flushed the biomass in the 220 bag before was removed, wrung out and dumped into the soaked plant material for later.
Eventually there was little water left and I was able to lift the mass collected in the 73u bag.
I was rather chuffed seeing this up close after washing it all into a small pile to drain out before pressing.
Spooning the material of the 73 screen onto the 25 with paper towel under was tedious but done. I then folded over the 25 and pressed by hand over and over wringing out the towel until the mass was all crumbly and looking like this:
I turned everything over onto a small plate and chopped it up increasing the surface area.
The plate stayed uncovered in the freezer for 24 hours then I scraped the frozen material through a metal colander with the back of a metal spoon onto parchment in a cardboard box.
This is now in my drying tent and has reached a RH% of 49% since leaving it in there and is the texture of dry sand.
Will do the hand press in a ziplock later.
Thanks everyone for all the info! This was a lot of fun and now I have more ice-trays so I don’t buy frozen water like a sucker in .
Just so everyone reading this understands something…
I’m not against people using old school techniques to make hash. If I see it though, I’ll recommend an upgrade to the process so that you are cranking out live extracts. Hey, over 20 years ago I was making it like that too. Still got the photos. Dark hash etc so on.
Now? If I was making it like that, I’d see Che, Pam, or Bubbleman. They’d think I went fucking insane.
Nice work. Except for lower back pains I enjoy doing an ice water run when i can. If it’s good and cold this winter I’ll try and do more than I did last year.
I recommend using a 190 as well. It definitely catches a few particles that make it past the 220. Especially when doing multiple washes.
Thanks @Mr.NoBoDy ! I just did the second 1/2 of the dust and pulled the same amount as last time with the 73/25 combined. It’s pressed, crumbled and in the freezer while the “mash” from these two sessions sit again in the tank with ice after 10min agitation for the final pull. I’m not gonna mess up another bag with this seed sift but will try it out come fresh/frozen in the freezer washing machine runs!
