Hash Making Revisited

Got another batch drying in my freezer (beer froster) as I type.

nice! Can’t wait to see it  I had to go and make more hash porn to compete with all the crazy images!

The shelf hash is almost solid. Seems like the smell has really come alive… I’m wondering if that is linked in some way to the shiny coating. It’s almost like once the shiny coating is gone and the sparkles start, the smell really starts to pump. I’m going to be gathering more observations on the smell lol! Once I think I know what is going on I’ll try and falsify the Theory. Then I’ll make more observations about the shine on the hash vs the sparkle with some microscopic observations of the material in question.

ok, what are we looking at even? First container is shelf stable, big bud. Second one is Francos lemon cheese, fridge batch. Third is meat breath. No idea, yet what the fourth one is. I coulda investigated further, but I didnah.

In the stable batch, in the first image, I have noticed what was once clear liquid pools in the bottom of the container, have now turned white.

Just pulled this from the freezer, sealing it up and leaving it for 30 days in the fridge, will report back.

In a couple more days I’ll be doing some serious falsification, or attempt at it, on my own theory about the productivity of hash. After this next series of experiments, I will know concretely if it’s true or false. Even though I bitched and moaned about the plants I am experimenting on, and how shitty they are, this is a golden moment of truth. I can’t fucking wait!

When I make hash it’s always very light and pale but when pressed the outside always gets dark… is that plant matter or just oxidizing?
I’ve heard that a lot , dark means plant matter, but I would think if it was plant matter it would be dark throughout.
I always wondered if my process wasn’t good enough or if it’s just a natural reaction. Hearing both has always made me wonder

The fact that is only outside I suspect eliminates the biomass as the cause for darkening.

Outside browning is usually a sign of oxidation in most other organic compressed concentrates, the outside gets the most oxygen. I dont know that to be a fact with trichomes, but it does make sense.

Yah, there are a couple processes at work as far as I can tell. One happens within 24 hours of drying on the shelf, there is a darker color to the trichomes. The next part is if you get something on it, like touch it with your fingers can get oils on it and crud. Also, anything that comes out green with chlorophyll will turn brown when it dries…and the same for things containing plant fibers, they can darken as well.
If you are shelf drying hash and it gets dark on the outside, I find drying it faster keeps it lighter, but at a cost. Very little color change if you dry it at 60C for 45min in the dehydrator. On the other hand, freeze drying it works as well, just takes more time. The final consideration is the plant itself. With the same method, I can crank out really white C99 hash, or darker tan FLC-BX1 hash.

I do shelf dry, that might be what’s happening. I will try drying different ways and compare. I don’t have a dehydrator. Might have to pick one up if it works well

Yah when I did the dehydrator runs it costs some terpenes, but what you do is cut it into small bits and put it on the parchment in the dehydrator and let it rip. I remember drying it for 45min before it was solid, and it came out filled with small bubbles.

@JoeCrowe

Have you ever tried using dry ice ?
Just found out I can get it pretty easy ?

Thanks for your time

I haven’t tried it, but I’d like to! You have to order it from the industrial supplies store a week ahead of time around here.
