Help me choose an auto breeder

I’m new, and working on seeds for the first time so take this with a grain of salt…

First of all, you can clone autos, I have about 50 clones from 4 plants and could have doubled that easily. You are on a tight window, but it can be done.

This was my first DWC grow so I wasn’t planning on doing this, but when I started defoliating I was really loving the terps and growth I was getting from some plants. So, I decided to cut a bunch of clones from them and see how it went. I cut so many because of how much I’d heard that you can’t clone autos or that it’s a waste of time. I am now waiting for pollen from spraying STS on a handful of clones to reverse them and then will pollenate clones and perhaps some branches on the main plants assuming I get pollen.

The issue is it’s all based on speculation and the smell I’m getting from plucking. I won’t know how they’ll smoke and finish until later.

For my next grow I will take clones earlier and discard the clones that came from plants that aren’t impressive in any way.

I’m also starting a breeding project with some blueberry where I’ll be growing 30 seedlings and culling along the way until I get a few vigorous females with good terps and a good looking and smelling male. They will be back crossed and then I will hunt through those seeds to find the best plants and repeat. I will likely also make some R1’s, S1’s and F1’s from reversing some females.

Don’t you run into timeline issues, cutting, rooting, and reversing to pollinate the same plant? Maybe I’m missing something, but I usually stagger and start the reversed plants first, let it go for about 3 weeks or so and then start the plant that is getting the pollen. Anyway, just wondering. I like mephisto for autos and have also grown some medo 20twenty autos. Cheers!

Big grain of salt. When you clone an auto, as I understand it, it’s on the same schedule as the mother… you can clone them for easier organization into seed parcels, I guess, but you’re not going to keep that mother around indefinitely so that you can sample the smoke at your leisure and then decide whether you want to breed with it or not. Your auto branches, rooted or not, should be flowering on the same schedule as the mother, and should go into senescence and die naturally on the same schedule too.

So, as you and he said, all based on speculation and smells. Whether you take clones or not, I don’t see how to get around that. Maybe if you take a tissue culture from the meristem, freeze it and then start to regrow it a year down the line it’ll work, because the tissue culture doesn’t have leaves to supply the hormones to force the plant into flowering?

Absolutely, it feels a little like a stressful countdown and time is of the essence. You also risk stressing your main plants by cutting them up early. Starting the plants you think you’ll want pollen from early is a good way to cut down on that stress and potential timing issues.

As far as I can tell, and this is from experience, not something I read, you’re mostly correct.

Think of the lifespan of an autoflower more like a window in time. Much like how a full plant can have branches and and bud sites in different stages of development, clones are no different. Once you cut that clone, it’s schedule and timing and development can and will vary. In short, once they’re cut their schedule seems to vary a bit, but they’re all likely going to kick the bucket at the same time?

Someone who actually knows the science behind this please chime in if I’m wrong. It would be really interesting to know if stress and stunting growth potentially adds on to the “time” on the clock. I assume not, but I will be finding out soon!

@Blu-Tri But will it switch to flowering at a certaint point regardless of the state it’s in?

Does anyone know much about Tree of Life or grown their gear? How about purple caper, any experiences?

Also, I really want to run some of HSC’s autos, if anyone has done beans they want to trade or sell, or if anyone is interested in splitting a 10 park, please hit me up.

Also, feel free to hit me up with trade offers, I want to grow a good variety of breeders just to learn the plant better before I get serious about making my own crosses and select a good pollen donor. It would also be cool to run half a tent of just OG autos, so if you have any if this s let me know. Until then I’ll be reversing outstanding plants and using that pollen on other outstanding females.

What’s the best autoflower, high, taste, combination you’ve grown? Extra points for yield…

I’m trying to narrow things down for my next two grows, but instead of narrowing I’m just finding more things I want to grow :joy:

Lastly, has anyone found anything great in the regs that are available on OG or through a seed bank?

Popped my very first regs two days ago courtesy of @Alaskagrown 12 of them this round, I’m excited to watch them grow, 8 have sprouted for sure (two needed help), two others look like they’re about to, and two aren’t doing anything. Unless I don’t get a good plant or two, there will be some interesting blueberry x Mephisto crosses to sort through
