I had the Tahoe but tossed her for being a weak little runt after watching the Hollywood PK herm pretty fiercely.

Its very nice! Theres a lot of really nice things about tahoe. Its extremely potent and loud. Not that difficult to run for a heirloom kush cut. Some of them like underdog og (loompas headband) or irene kush can be, oof, very needy or picky. Tahoe not so much.

But really, its fascinating how some of these plants hybridize and the outliers you get.

I dont think gg4 hybridizes well, and i dont like white truffle, and i only view chimera 3 as an improved hybridization tool relative to those parents.

But combine i95 and chimera 3 and somehowā€¦ you get a squat broad leaf kush that can sit in super hot soil? That has no ceiling?

I dunno man, genetics are weird

Weird! I do not think tahoe is a runt. She really likes a hard dryback though!

Yeah Iā€™ve heard sheā€™s good once she acclimates to the setup. She didnā€™t seem like anything special to me so I wasnā€™t sad about it. Was sad on the HPK tho and it just became fodder. No issues with the TK or chems tho.

Not sure if id describe tahoe as special but she is solid as fuck. 9/10 or 9.5/10 overall and washes from what im told. Perfect parent stock.

Also works for sleep meds if you arent already used to it prob.

Smoking it is also like being waterboarded with pinesol. Its extremely earthy. So thats really really nice but not my number one choice for a terp profile.

I remember the annoyance of buying overpriced breeder packs of seeds from overseas prior to US seedbanks and so I get the impulse to ā€œpreserveā€ for self, and I appreciate it. My post was about the community projects where the ultimate conclusion is a giveaway of seeds. Also the breeders who are selling seeds.

Open pollination runs could make sense if people were growing in large greenhouses, fields or giant rooms. Iā€™ve seen countless ā€œpreservationā€ projects since joining OG, and at this point I feel like Iā€™ve seen more of the seed increases than people actually growing out the seeds resulting from them. From that perspective they make absolutely no sense.

Those who do actually grow out the seeds arenā€™t even coming close to the numbers required to be bottle-necked by a 1 to 1 pairing. What good is having 36 different combinations of male:female when 35 of them sit in the fridge for eternity? What about intersex pollen from untested females?

My whole point was that maybe things would be better off if we were growing plants, forming opinions on them, looking for outliers, and interacting with others. Instead the site focus seems to be generating more ā€œvaluableā€ coinflips that are just going to sit in someones refrigerator until we move on to the next hype preservation. How are those Goji OG F2s coming along that everyone seems to be holding? I would bet more people grew out the F1s to make those seeds for that project than have grown out F2s resulting from themā€¦ Iā€™m sure itā€™s close if not.

But maybe thatā€™s what people were paying for? Not the seeds themselves, but the work that was done? I mean, I can only go off of what Iā€™ve read, but as far as I know those European breeders were actually, you know, breeding. Growing out hundreds of plants, making observations and then selecting based on those observations, ā€œlocking downā€ desirable traits etc etc.

That sounds like work to me (albeit fun work haha). Work should be compensated.

Yeah, you knowā€¦ This is what I was getting at. Itā€™s better just to not know what everybodyā€™s doing, as far as those sorta ā€œpreservation runā€ things are concerned (and a lot of other stuff, too). Watching people type,ā€Ooooh! I am SO IN!ā€ Never to be heard from againā€¦

I havenā€™t looked at any of those things in a long while, but I do wonder if maybe a lot of the people involved in them are just new here. I know that when I first joined OG, I was like,ā€Oh, shit, this is kinda crazyā€¦ā€ I signed up for ElGalloBlancoā€™s Gold Star thing, signed up for nubeā€™s Diablo thing, signed up for a couple other thingsā€¦ Iā€™ve grown one or two of the ā€œf2ā€™sā€ I signed up for a few years ago, but not those. I will at some point, but stillā€¦ When you first get here, itā€™s a little bit overwhelming.

Eventually, hopefully, you learn. And priorities change.

Whateverā€¦ haha.

Iā€™m just sayinā€™ā€¦ Quit paying attention to that shit. It really doesnā€™t enrich your life in any way whatsoever. Best to just ignore it and do what youā€™re gonna do.

Iā€™ve got so many opinions on it all but as someone who definitely does take part in a fair of amount of seed related activities here, I have plans to use 95% of them and I actually do grow so many things haha but Iā€™m not here to defend me or anyone else. I also feel like it would/will take me literal years before I am like ā€œyeah I made these seeds grow themā€ because I want to explore whatever genetics before just making decisions I may regret in 7 months.

That doesnā€™t necessarily include things like making f2s for myself to dig into or crossing plants I know are more wild or landrace-y with things I think can make them more fun/medicinal for me when growing indoors then digging through those.

Ultimately itā€™s almost entirely personal for me so whatever but, I may sound old here, I think social media and the idea of ā€˜building your brandā€™ has given people false confidence in their own selections. People believe they are making good selections because they donā€™t even know what their standards are. Kinda back to your point, minitiger.

People that sell seeds here, aside from a few, come across as predatory in my opinion. Obviously not all, but itā€™s a place where there is no bar for entry, really. Someone with any experience can come in and make a few quick sales from folks who donā€™t know better yet. Total sidenote: alleles are deleterious. Not traits. Inbreeding is far less likely in the ā€˜wildā€™ and so youā€™re more likely to see recessive deleterious alleles combine because youā€™re bypassing natural selection in sense. They could express as any number of traits. But! I am in full agreeance with syzygy that I wish more people just grew plants. Iā€™ve been part of a few threads personally where dozens of people get seeds of whatever and myself and maybe one or two other end up being the only with any above ground. It also is crazy how many different seed runs are done. Should they all be reproduced? Itā€™s like imaginary demand fueling it. I am not organized. If I canā€™t pretty much remember everything in my seed stash, something probably needs to be gone. Every circumstance is different but I just donā€™t get it. Also, youā€™ll see those goji f2 from me soon enough! Iā€™m curious because it was some of the best smoke Iā€™ve ever had and Iā€™ve seen, uh, not hate, but not necessarily love for the f2s. Hah but Iā€™m just one dude with a 4x4. I also just really like growing weed. Itā€™s why Iā€™m here.

Enjoy your trip holy. And yes, itā€™s the IX from the repro(pretty sure. Didnā€™t checkā€¦got from San.) that no one has grown out.

Oh, dude, I wasnā€™t doing some sorta passive-aggressive thing. I honestly do not pay attention to that shit, had no idea you were involved in that stuff. And good for you, man! Seriously, this is just a ā€œMeā€ thing. This is what Iā€™ve decided is best for my own mental health. I donā€™t wanna know too much. Iā€™m a misanthrope, you know? I donā€™t wanna be, I wanna love everyone, but people make it so difficult haha.

But yeah, dude! Fuck yeah! Do the seeds thing! Haha.

Right. Which, again, is just another reason for people to ignore it.

Itā€™s all just this fucking FOMO bullshit. I mean, ultimately, whatā€™re you missing out on? Not getting in on the latest drop? Not being able to tell people you bought the latest Hot Pack of Seeds?

Who gives a shit?

Itā€™s like what you said right here:

Or the same way ā€œbreedersā€ are like,ā€Only fifty packs of these seeds available, so get in on them while you can!ā€ Why? Why are there only 500 seeds available? Every time I seen anybody do a seed run, theyā€™re complaining about how many thousands of seeds they had to shuck from one female and one maleā€¦

Hahahah!!! Right? Heā€™s gonna come home and log on to OG and be like,ā€Uhā€¦ Wut?ā€ hahaā€¦ ā€œWhat the fuck just happened here?ā€

Completely agree. When I first came here there so many seed runs, couldnā€™t believe it. Then I switched to primarily clones for the next 3 years. Back to seeds now, but will take 5-10 years to deplete my seed supply.

Now I just stay in my lane. Donā€™t have a log. Post some pics here and there in a couple different places. And follow along with certain people. And a lot of them have gone, for one reason or another. And Iā€™m good with that. If people want to make, sell, give seeds, great for them. But not my cup of tea.

And I just dropped half a pack of LowDak from Lefty that I received probably 4 years ago!!

being fairly new here and my past experience in forums was not too big either i am having the same angular perspective as you id say

but this whole discussion is having my brain wsnting for more i need to learn more
gimme a drill im going deeper in this rabbit hole now thank you
breeding knowledge was my endgoal game when i joined here but i do have to agree that i got distracted by all the free seeds also

Oh Iā€™m guilty on the seedruns. I have no problems signing up for or taking seeds from open pollinations, I just donā€™t want to do any OPā€™s myself  Iā€™m fine searching through OP f2s for outliers, thatā€™s the fun part. The hard part is finding two of them so you can move the line forward.

So if Iā€™m making seeds, itā€™s selective. If I chose poorly, that line gets shelved. Gotta take the bad with the good. They canā€™t all be winners and thereā€™s always room for learning. Helps to have seeds to go back to in order to choose againā€¦

All that said, I have more packs than I can feasibly germinate anytime soon :sheep: Not counting my own seeds, I could soak a pack a week for the next 7.35 years :joy: or 5 packs a year for the next 76 years :joy: to be fair tho, most those plants go into the compost. The lastā€¦ 6 packs of beans got me maybe 2 keepers and a male.

I also find it hard to justify to myself to buy multiple packs of the same thing. I get torn between wanting more to search through and, what if this stuff sucks and now I have two packs of it :joy: been doing team wing-it instead. Pop what I have and if itā€™s good and need more, hope thereā€™s more beans available for trade. Sometimes I have no intention of doing anything and a plant just stands out at me, have to breed it. Thatā€™s like half of my selection process right there, whatā€™s talking to me. Most plants arenā€™t, but some do :upside_down_face:

Iā€™ve been reflecting on how easy it is to go too deep on some things while staying shallow on others. Thereā€™s a point where someone says something, and even though it might be true, you cringe at the audacity of it. But there it is. People like that donā€™t just expose the flaws of others, but they also make you reflect on your own willingness to buy into it. I appreciate people like that because I enjoy a good laugh, especially when itā€™s at my own expense.

Iā€™m starting to understand that while many people want to make money, not everyone has the scruples to do it in a sustainable way. If you really pay attention, most people have good intentions. Itā€™s just their character flaws that keep them spinning in circles, stuck in the same patterns. The ones who see things clearly and have the nerve to point it out can be a real pain, but theyā€™re invaluable. For those of us with the strength and willingness to change, those people are key to breaking out of the ridiculous loops we find ourselves in. So yes, I really do appreciate the perspective!

Yeah, Iā€™m one of those who want to ā€œspeak upā€ when I see shit going down. Not always that awesome to pay the consequences, but I rather do that then to stand by and watch.

Tbh, I love the idea to spread free seeds and Overgrow the world. But often seeds isnā€™t reproduced and released just before I would need them and they goes into the freezer for safe storage. Itā€™s like the sativas that I have collected here at OG. In my current setup I wonā€™t be able to grow these out, but I know that I will when I have a very safe location and can upgrade my setup to larger tents.

Thatā€™s also what have happend with the Goji OG I received. I want to use it to cross to Bruce Banner and itā€™s a upcoming project of mine. It will get grown and hunted down the line, but Iā€™m still stuck with my Chem ideas I want to finish before moving on.

Right now, Iā€™m working on acclimating a particular strain back to its supposed origin at the 30Ā°s latitude. I realize this isnā€™t a popular approach, but Iā€™m not selling anything or hyping it upā€”just running large numbers of seeds to guide it back to what I believe was its starting point. I hope it hasnā€™t been mixed with ruderalis, but I havenā€™t run the genome and donā€™t have the tools to do so. I know itā€™s something I like, so Iā€™m willing to put in the time.

Although some might argue that things can be bred into oblivion, there are techniques that can ā€œshuffle the bases,ā€ potentially even influencing which side of the chromatin gets transcribed. Sometimes, when it seems like a trait is lost, itā€™s possible that the right approach can bring back something that was epistatically suppressed.
