Is it too late to go back to school?

Hey Overgrowers!

Turning 29 on January 30 has me thinking about going back to school. I’ve been feeling lost since leaving school over 10 years ago. Life has been kind of aimless and depressing. Each passing year, the world seems more and more pointless to me. I want to change that and give myself some purpose.

I have no clue where to start or what to study, but I want to bring home the bacon and do something meaningful. I’m reaching out to you, the nicest folks on the internet, for your perspectives, experiences, and maybe some good luck wishes. It’s been a rough time lately, so any help is appreciated!

Much love to everyone !

This being said: While I am a high promoter of education I am also also very aware and open about academic institutions being all about the almighty dollar these days!

So… don’t let those fuckers fleece you!

It’s never too late man, I’ve been thinking about the same things in my life and I don’t think I want to twist wrenches forever. I’ve been thinking about going back to school too.

My dad went back to school when I was kid and he was 40. He’s still working his dream job 25 years later and he plans on working another 10 years(part-time).

Oh I’m super aware of that, education on a budget will be the main thing ! I’m def never taking out a loan. That’s how they get ya it’s scary haha

If you can learn on yer own then do so! Those I know that learned on the go always seem to be better at it than those that learned it formally.

Can’t compare life gain XP vs book gained XP.

But both are important; I just don’t think you should HAVE to pay someone for the book part.

Woah ! That’s awesome. I have no children yet, but I know that will happen in a couple years. I guess it’ll be able to get worked out, but I really want to be a good example for my family. I am first generation here in the US. So it certainly would be cool as hell.

Thank you for this response

It’s never too late to invest in yourself. That being said look at it as an investment. You put money and time here, where will it be expected to get you. The return on investment.

I went to a tech school at 27. Hanging out with a bunch of kids right out of high school sucks. Teeth gritting. You have a leg up though, cause to you this will be a place of business and not a social club about how cool you are. I say best time to go. Good luck.

I didn’t even think of that, most def all business. Everyone’s counting on me. Must make everyone and myself proud. Waking up with purpose would be amazing I could only imagine

This is true and I love the idea but I was kind of forced to go to school. Not that some one tied me up and said your going but I came out of the military with a computer background. I hated it. All my experience before and on the side of the military was mechanical but either too long ago or undocumented. So I had several employers refuse to hire because I “had a good job already, why would you wanna do this”. So school was a way for me to prove I meant business.

I went back to school in my 50’s.
No matter what you do make sure you pick an accredited school. Especially if you decide to use an online school. All schooling is expensive so make sure you go for something that truly interests you or you are wasting your time and money…….

Depending on what you want to do there are some places that won’t even look at your resumé unless you have a degree.

I happen to believe school is a good regardless of practical benefit, if you can afford it.

At 29, you aren’t too old for any kind of new tricks to be learned. You’ve got plenty of time.
That said, and with an understanding you’re probably talking about something more academically based, it’s also not too late to get into an apprenticeship program, if you’ve got the blessing of a body that can take the work in that trade when you advance. There’s no better way to learn for most folks than to do the damn thing, I’ve always said. And apprenticing can give you a lot more than just an in on a job. If you can get into a solid union, there’s really no better security for you and yours. Jobs and benefits for life. Not to mention the pride of all you can build.
Plenty of trades have apprenticeships or equivalents, and it’s got all your networking baked in if you have the head for that kind of thing. You can usually start making money before you’re even really done, in journeyman situations. Like academics, there’re folks plenty ready to take advantage of folks who don’t know better, but that’s the case in anything, eh?
Good luck in whatever you find to invest in your future, bro.
Stay up!

And personally I wouldn’t make this a hard and fast rule. My dad never would have never been able to do what he did without student loans. Student loans should be used very carefully because they can be dangerous especially if you don’t have a specific direction or career in mind.

Student loan = the best loan you’re ever going to get.

It’s very much different as a man going to school with the forethought that this will translate to lifestyle. I pulled a 4.0 through mechanic school while working full time and raising two kids. It’s not miraculous when you have a vision you’re reaching for. Anyone that tells you it’s to hard, your gonna burn out, I would never, has never worked for anything before lol.

School is hard, and you will burn out, but in a productive good way.
