Let us discuss seed giveaways, proper etiquete, self restraint, and seed addiction + Pets

i got some from two guys on here. between them both i probably have enough to run just from seed for the next 4 years…and i run a lot of plants that are super small for variety purposes…like over 30 a year or more. but if i see something cool i am put name on the list. one of the rarest strains in the world…i think they had a piece on one in high times, gets thrown around here from time to time…i would pay for it if i could.

man, i have walked through the valley of the shadow of death last year for 3 days in sicu. i faced it the first time at 21 when i had a birthday sitting on a tank in the desert. i have to have a mission or be the luckiest man alive based on the close calls i have had, and those are the ones i know about. chased by a known killer, wrapped up in a parachute, hanging onto a ledge on a cliff high wall, all in a day’s work and totally normal at the time. all that and i’ve never been one of the cool guys or done the wild shit. i guess that says something about what it takes to impress me but hanging with the operators in the spec ops unit does that to you. i was on track to become one when i got busted smoking pot. go figure. oh well, i am damned glad i didn’t get it looking back. much happier this way and my conscious is cleaner.

Much respect and thank you for your service my friend. Wow I can only imagine. Although I do always wish I did join the army, it’s in my blood but I didn’t believe in the cause. :man_facepalming:t2:

you’re welcome. i was thoroughly indoctrinated at a young age. i think that is what caused most of my problems, getting older and realizing just how fucked up things were in relation to what i saw. i spent many years on the shady side of things because of it. but it put me in a unique position to do what i was called to do which is training folks in prison. kind of cool actually.

imo a giveaway is a giveaway. putting rules on the giveaway is the holders call and they are on the hook to follow up with said winner if they indeed are passionate about the rules they are enacting.

unpopular opinion: This is shadow politics. People more worried about what others are doing. some even blame others for their own misfortunes and that lottery ticket that rich person bought is why I’m so poor.

wrong pic on the other one, but it has useful info so i’m leaving it. this is project code.

Just my opinion and view on the subject from some things I’ve seen. If your entering a competion and win something I think thats fine. But in other circumstances I sometimes have seen people jumping on people’s generosity and give aways and claiming something with no intentions of ever using the strain themselves, but instead to keep the seeds as a barging tool for other trades or to sell, or to bulk their collection for no other reasons but bragging rights. That in my opinion is not good, and if I was giving away something id be giving it away because id whant someone to grow it and get pleasure out if it themselves, not to fill someones pockest. And not as a bargining chip or so someone can build a collection for clout and if its not for personal use. Someone who is claiming seeds like that is taking away from someone else they potential could of helped and healed. Whats the point of claiming things you have no intention to use or you know you will never get round to using. In my opinion people give away for the benifit of their fellow og’s, so that they can grow and gain some sort of pleasure and healing from the plant. I do agree with @lov da autos, its all about the love and the actually intention to use the seed an the good vibes it brings to us all. We all should be mindful otherwise it ruins it for others. Just my opinion

I give away with zero strings attached…. Stick em in the fridge, pop em, give them away etc. Most here know this is a site full of collectors , and tbh without these collectors many MANY of these outstanding strains would be lost to time and have no shot at preservation. Yes there’s a few bad apples but the majority is honest, trustworthy people with like minds building a collection with preservation intentions as well as the next 20/30/40/50 years. I personally pop a minimum of 250 beans a year, usually many many more depending on the situation and the year. Some I know pop thousands an in that atmosphere a few thousand beans are a drop in the hat. With the exception of the scammers/thieves who truly are few and far between and usually called out or warned REAL QUICK, I don’t know most peoples personal situations so whether they enter and win 1 or 100 giveaways means nothing to me, I’ve been taken a few times but still continue to pass out beans steady and on the other end of the spectrum scoop up everything on my list, and a few I didn’t know existed that intrigue me. I will say I don’t grab stuff I don’t want or won’t grow as that’s pointless. I love this place and anything that benefits OG I’m all for .

That was my initial purpose for coming here. Came because I google searched about greenpoint and seen @DefNSmokn fritter dawg thread. Been in a rough patch so before I was buying single seeds from NASC. To see a regular guy growing the stuff I was looking at was cool. He sent me some beans and when I went to grow them out I been here ever since.

I haven’t personally seen many folks taking advantage of the giveaways.

Before I get deeper into my opinion on this topic, I want to say loud and clear that I am a full-blown seed addict who has many more strains than I have time to grow in my life lol

But, I have plenty of great gear that I paid cash for from seedbanks and directly from some breeders too, so if I am trading or giving someone seeds for free, I have plenty to offer, and often can throw in an extra 5 pack or something like that.

I’m pretty sure I saw one dude get warned about asking for a bunch of stuff for free, plus he was all over every giveaway, and he was talking about big orders from seedbanks. He did have a story about getting robbed, which could’ve been completely true or not, who knows? and many folks were compassionate enough to offer plenty of beans up for free to him as well.

I have won a few giveaways since I joined Overgrow last November, and I still enter a lot of them, just to see if I can get some awesome genetics that often I wouldn’t have had the chance to grow, especially if I wasn’t on here, and interacting with so many good folks with great genetics, plenty of knowledge, and genuine kindness.

I have been shown so much generosity, good will, and absolute kindness as well, from so many members, nearly everyone that I have interacted with. I try to keep up the welcoming attitude I was shown early on by so many members, and I know some of us haven’t crossed paths yet, but if anything, it’s just a matter of time until we discuss grow techniques, make a trade, or enter one another’s giveaway.

I only have had incredibly limited negative experiences with anyone at all on Overgrow, for example, if y’all remember the Bodhi seed and strain discussion thread being shut down for a few days earlier this year, that’s the situation I am referring to…

And I now think that was pretty much a complete misunderstanding, which then led to me acting like a complete and utter jerk, even taking out my stress and frustration from other life situations out on the member who I thought was trying to make me feel unwelcome and such.

I know that was the completely wrong approach and response to take, and I still feel like I should be apologetic to the overgrow community. So…

I’m very sorry y’all !

Now, back to thoughts on the awesome giveaways and people being opportunistic or taking advantage of it, I really don’t think anyone on here is simply using the system of giveaways + generous folks to not grow them out, but just to have more things to trade, sell, or store in the fridge. I truly think that most of us do have good intentions.

I’ll echo what has been said in this thread a few times from all I’ve read, if the host of the giveaway intends the seeds to be grown as soon as possible, and be documented, or anything like that, then they should include that information in the wiki post to be completely transparent.

The same thing should apply to those who add their name to the wiki, if they can’t grow it out due to time, space, or other factors, they should let the person hosting the giveaway know, like hey I don’t have space to grow these seeds yet, but I can grow them after summer, or after my current crop finishes, for example.

That way, everyone is aware of what the deal is, is on the same page, and no one has a reason to feel like their kindness was used, or to be disappointed that the recipient of the seeds who won the giveaway wasn’t intending to grow them right away.

I don’t blame any of y’all for having different opinions about this kind of thing, but really my point is simple: if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

I’m pretty sure anyone causing any issues or problems by hoarding seeds, always asking for freebies, and not interacting much on the site, would get addressed by the moderators.

All strains I enter a giveaway for are strains I personally would love to grow for smoke, or maybe even use as a mom or dad in pollen chucking.

I know I will be very glad that I am holding on to certain old packs or discontinued strains in a few years as I continue to make F2’s from genetics that I don’t want to lose.

All in all, I think we should probably leave things as is, or if there is an intended use for the seeds, be clear and let people know what you are wanting. But what do I know ? Lol

Everyone have a good day, happy growing, and I’m sorry I wrote such a long message to respond, but I wanted to be clear and also say everything that was on my mind regarding the subject.

If you’ve made it this far into this ridiculously long post, thank you for being patient, and caring to hear me out haha.

Peace!

My views as a noob:
Putting restrictions on what another man does with his property is wrong.
Don’t trade things to strangers you aren’t willing to lose.
Don’t outright trust a strangers word.
Don’t take anything personally.

One of my goals is to make a sour kush fem strain and give them away on here to spread the genetics I love and be able to say I contributed to the effort to “overgrow the world” with free seeds and badass smoke.

Things are great on over grow as they are. If anyone should stop and think about what they are doing before continuing further, it should be those who have bad or negative intentions or who aren’t doing things in the way of the og spirt. There are some great people here with big hearts with great minds, and many that are very generous. I know if things weren’t just the way they are here many people wouldn’t have got to try things they long for, and im also sure some strains would have not continued to exist. The system and the way the community works is spot on. Its those who have badness in their heart who need to make the change.

I think we can all agree with that.
We need to be more aware of those type of people.
I think that is all @LoveDaAutos was really trying to say in the original post.

But it is hard to decern a seed junky from a seed vulture.
It can be quite a bit of work and even then leave you wondering.
Against my better judgment, we took in some real newbies on the island.
It has worked out really well, some of those newbies have even done giveaways of their own.

So trust is important here and in general life.
But you still got to pass the Lucy sniff test.! :sunglasses:
There are good reasons to lock your doors at night.

Aw , she is a pushover

Out of likes, she is not mine.

Those rotts, and most dogs are very intuitive.
They are known to protect their territory with passion.
So she probably is a pushover, but what I find strange is how dogs just don’t like some people, even if they are not wearing a hat…LOL

And yes, I know you are just jerkin’ my dog chain… :joy:

Seems like a lot of dogs hate UPS trucks. Dont get same reaction with Fedex or Amazon Prime

I’m picking up on some serious side-eye. What’d I do? I’m innocent I tells ya.

Lucy is my dog hehehe.
She is extremely rebellious LOL Seems to despise authority… but she is not one to be crossed. Last weigh in was 76 kilos… I ain’t joking.
She is the agressive/alpha the type of rotti personality that is always on guard and a bit hard to manage sometimes. Which bothers me but I tolerate her. This summer will be lots of training with food rewards and we will see if she comes around.
Her Job as Island security is one she is perfectly suited for and anyone who messes with her will have a lot to tangle with hehehe Lucyfer… she is that.
