Life after Death?

science, like any tool, can be used to create suffering. That’s why it’s important to understand that suffering isn’t good. I could take a hammer and hit someone on the head, it’s just a tool or I can hit a nail. Suffering is more of a moral judgement, but is part of rational thinking.

you Imply that Buddhism is a tool used to create suffering. So is science. you mock Buddhism for political atrocities but take no ownership of those created by science.

But how do you feel about Mengele?

Buddhism was supposed to be all about ending suffering, but in some cases the followers commit acts that create suffering.
Science has no claim about ending suffering.

And yet you don’t respond about Mengele. Pure science creating suffering.

Science is a dangerous weapon without being reigned in by a good.

Perhaps you will make a utilitarian argument about sacrificing a few for the greater good? If so, who is the judge of that good? You?

So wait… if you only look at the negative side of a thing it looks shitty? Go figure.

Uptight assholes cause all the problems in life. If all the ‘true believers’ rejected science, for real. Then that’s a win imo. No more driving around in cars, no trains, flights etc for them. No more TV evangelists  no phones or radio

We might hardly ever hear from them again…it could get dull…

Nah we’d just invent something new to disagree over, like we always have done eh

Here’s my take, God doesn’t live in the heavens, he/she/it IS the heavens. Yup God is the entire universe. It made a home for us then allowed us to become what we are. We are made from bits of it so it’s omnipresent and in all of us just as we are in it.
I believe quantum entanglement theory is the first step towards explaining how it all works.

The end!

And yeh i’m stoned again

aren’t we all here just working out our karma (this lifetime, previous lifetimes, our inherited ancestral karma) ???

it seems to me that we have lots of patterns within us that run - whether we are aware of them or not.

just because some calls themselves, or dresses like a certain group (insert whichever buddhist group offends you :)) - in no way indicates they understand and have put into practice in their lives actions which removes obstacles for personal growth…

Here’s one for ya. When we are born we inherit half of each parents DNA, this recombines to make us what we are. What if DNA can contain memories among all the other information it passes on to us?
In a way we have all lived before this current life because our DNA has lived other lives. When we die our DNA also dies - but, the atoms that we all consist of will go back to the planet and eventually the universe that created them. Maybe they will reform as part of something else in the long distant future lol maybe we don’t fully cease to exist after all

We’re made out of the bits of a dead star, so in that way we’re celestial beings. I’m not sure energy and particles loosely scattered about the universe could be considered “you”, any more than the random dust that wasn’t a part of you.

That’s just blaming the shitty things we do on past lives. By that rationale I could say that all believers are pretending, since each one is self-identified. Nobody else decides for you right?

That’s where quantum entanglement comes in, apparently…what do i know, i’m just a stoner

Hey, here’s the scientific method for you:
observation → hypothesis → experiment → conclusion. Repeat.
It’s a “tool of the human mind” but can be abused to “prove” anything. The human is the linchpin.

I have a better nazi story. Philipp lenard creates the cathode ray tube and calls relativity “jewish physics”. Do you just refuse to acknowledge science as a tool, like a hammer? It doesn’t require the person wielding it to be “righteous” or “evil”, it can be used by either.

I agree science is a tool.

You seem to posit it as some wonderful abstraction free from the bounds of reality.

I’m sure there are scientists who believe they are doing science for sciences sake. They are mistaken. Their high minded research is funded by something or somebody with an agenda. Personal, political, whatever.

Photons do not need you to defend their existence.

yah well, you have to pile on the other tools of the human mind. Rational thinking, and logic. Critical thinking. The basics. The philosophy of science is there to determine if you are doing real science or not. It’s additionally up to the human to realize when they are making a science no no, using this philosophy.
Science from latin scientia meaning knowledge. Knowledge is something that changes over time. Thus rendering religious texts… in the “not knowledge” zone. ahem.

You say the philosophy of science is the only way and now you say that the philosophy of science cannot defend the value of the philosophy of science.

You are speaking out of both sides of your mouth and trying to have your cake and eat it too.

So, there are important questions the philosophy of science cannot answer.

Get off your horse.

tfw you come back to a thread a week later and the same dude is making the same bad circular arguments and picking and choosing what he responds to while using pieces of arguments he obviously doesn’t understand to vehemently defend an undefendable position.

You have more patience than me @Foreigner

thank for adding nothing to the conversation, you committed logical fallacy “do your own research”.
