Holy crap @Oldjoints i can only imagine that experience, crazy! Glad you are still with us to tell the tale. Thanks for sharing
Granddad and one of the bootlegging trucks. Atlantic City from the exact time of Boardwalk Empire and all of that nonsense. He was a boxer and “bartender” back then.
Nice!! Inward heel flips. Good stuff!
Wife and I at 16-17 years old, then a decade later
Yes that was the ship a day or two after the fire. The superstructure failed due to the intensity of the heat from the fire. We learned the next day that the fire was put out about 12 ft from where the shells and ammo was stored. If it had exploded that the whole fleet would have been in jeopardy. All because a 26 year old officer didn’t follow orders of his captain and decided to change the course of the Belknap.
Oh ok I was wondering if the colors seemed accurate. I had a great uncle who was in a similar situation in the war but I cant recall the details. Thanks for the information.
You are welcome.
BTW the officer that was the cause of the accident received no punishment.
Uncle was a bombardier in the European theater in WW2. After he passed we went through hus old photos, and he had lots of these verifying results of missions. This one over Vienna was striking for me…
That’s awesome! I absolutely love that kind of stuff! The only thing we have is pics and the letter my grandma received when they said he was MIA…. Ended up spending 14 months in POW camp, came walking up the drive one day 16 months later, my grandma thought he was dead! I can only imagine the joy 🥹
750 bombs dropped! Damn
He had some crazy stories. Plane was shot down off the coast of Italy. Had to swim miles to shore dragging one of his mates. When he got to shore, realized mate was dead. Then had to find his way across across enemy territory back to allied forces. He couldn’t have been but 22y.o. when that happened. They had to grow balls quick back then. I was just doing dumb shit when I was that age.
That’s a fact! And same here. I always say I was born in the wrong time. I would have made a great soldier
Trying to find a Peanuts cartoon that mentions my great-grandfather and the picture of him and Pele after a match. Baltimore Suns and stuff. Also, see if I can find the pics of my other grandfather with Arthur Ashe and his pictures from designing stuff at Head and working on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. He was also on the team that designed the amphibious duck boat deals for the military. Interesting guy. No clue where that stuff is though. Guessing my dad has a lot of it, but I haven’t spoken to him in 20+ years. Wish I had that stuff now though.
Yo, I have a family member that worked on the tunnels! Crazy
Haha That’s wild. He was an engineer doing the plum bobbing and stuff when they were doing it I guess. Remember a story of a guy falling in at night and that there was a house where they all congregated and ate lunch that had awesome tomatoes they’d eat like apples with a salt shaker. He played basketball wayyyy back for Towson too. I remember his stories of how awesome Chuck Taylors were when they first came out. Haha He went to John’s Hopkins after Towson and my dad and uncle went to Loyola college and the Loyola academy or whatever it’s called now. I remember the alumni magazines my dad would get and my uncle and him were by far the two biggest losers who went there. Hahaha
Gramps was captain of this bomber out of Tinian island in the Pacific theater. Same base where the Enola Gay flew from. He was 19y.o. when he started flying a bomber through flak. He never talked much about it to the kids.
Badass! GrandPops was a g for sure! Love it B-52 @Tracker ?
