My Freakers Preservation Project: BCSC NL#5

Pretty much exactly. When he got them originally he grew out a bunch and picked the one girl that didn’t exhibit any of those thai traits, and that’s what used for breeding all the nl5 crosses he made and released. The US NL5 Clone he saw when he came back to the states later, DID exhibit thai traits.

Thanks Upstate! Like others have said, it is more of a middle of the road/up high. Iirc It got me really high, and made my eyes really red lol.

Thanks man! Glad to have ya! I’m going to do my best. This is a little out of my normal diggs. :v:

Love all the NL history! Thanks guys!

Found this old bud shot from 5 years ago.

I wish they were more specific when they were showing ancestry and naming these. Which Thai was used? There are many. It’s like saying Afghani by African… everything used to be so secretive.

Yeah, I dunno where they got the idea that people could reproduce a line if only they could find an Afghani plant and a Thai plant. Or whatever. It’s like that description of Jack Herer from way back, where they were like,”The exact lineage will have to remain a secret.” Why? Even IF I had a Haze plant, a Skunk Plant and a Northern Lights plant (the speculated lineage of Jack), unless I had access to the specific parent plants used to make it, I couldn’t recreate it. And even if I had access to those parent plants, I wouldn’t know at what ratio everything was added. Very stupid.

Yep. Probably pointless that they were so secretive. I guess if one grape strain pops out of a mix, the chance that another great one can pop out of that same mix is pretty good. Perhaps they were fearing competition. I suppose it’s like liquor and beer recipes. They remain pretty secretive as well. I mean craft beer LOL. Not many Secrets to Budweiser or Coors recipes.

I dunno, I found a clone recipe online for Anderson Valley’s Summer Solstice (my favorite beer EVER) in like two seconds haha. If I only had space to brew my own beer… I did just buy out Total Wine and More’s entire stock of it, though haha!

Not the best pictures, but the plants are chugging along. I don’t normally flower plants in pots this small (or under LEDs) so this should be a good learning experience. They’re about two weeks into flower. Probably be getting the pollen out in a week or so. Any opinions on sweet spot for pollinating, techniques, etc? I was going to get out an oscillating fan and pollen to coat the plants. :v:

Give the males a little shake now and then with a fan blowing around there will be loads of seed. That’s always worked great for me.

That would definitely work! I already flowered out three males, collected and mixed the pollen. Maybe I’ll blast them with pollen a couple of times? :v:

That will do the trick for sure. Leave the males in with the females and set up a oscillating fan for natural wind pollination. Your males will inevitably die before the females do. Once the male plants stop dropping pollen, you can hit the females a few more times with the pollen you collected. That will ensure your buds are %100 fully seeded, if that’s what you’re going for.

edit- if I misunderstood you and the male plants are no longer in the grow but you collected pollen, this would still be a good technique. The important thing is to find a method where you are not applying the pollen manually.

If you pollinate with a paintbrush, the technique is to dip the brush in the pollen, hold it above the buds and then gently tap it to sprinkle the pollen down onto the pistils. You don’t want the brush to come into physical contact with the buds / pollination sites because it can damage the pistils and interfere with pollination.

yep what’s been said already and

You generally want to pollinate from like end of week 3(day 21), up through at least week 4(day 28), and possibly into week 5(day 35), for the most seeds possible. Ideally you’d chop at around 10 weeks(70 days-ish), longer if they’ll keep going but I found most seeds are ready in 4-6 weeks.

That’s all I got  They’re all looking great!

I touch them pistils with a qtip doesn’t present a problem

I sometimes dab them gently with a male flower or flowering branch. you just don’t want to handle them roughly, they are somewhat sensitive to being disturbed immediately before or after pollination.

Hi @zephyr! Thanks for the input! The males are no longer, and I have a decent amount of pollen from all three males mixed together. Sounds like what I might do is get the oscillating fan out 2-3 times from week 3-4. Not looking forward to the pollinating. I am super allergic to the pollen, and the plants are in the house. Plus there’s a tremendous amount of smoke in the air from the forest fires. So maybe two pollinations lol.

Thank you @HolyAngel! That’s what I was thinking as far as dates. Hopefully not too long before I’m shucking seeds. They started flowering on July 1st or 2nd. :v:

This cutting rooted in a cup of water in 2 weeks lol. No rooting hormones of any kind added. Just water.

I rooted hundreds of clones in cups of water before I got my hands on some Rootone and rockwool cubes I discovered in a WVU Biology Dept. hallway.

Little slow here, but I pollinated the girls on their 24th day of flowering. I used about a tablespoon of pollen and a small oscillating fan; gently tapping a spoon with some pollen on it onto the backside of the fan and blowing the pollen around. I left a fan going to continue the pollen movement. I’ve never done it this way before, so I’m hoping it will work fine. I still have a little bit of pollen left that I might use in a couple of days.

I was wondering what was going on with this one. Kind of forgot about it until you posted a pic of that nug in the Bodhi thread a couple days ago…

Yeah, I’m slow as usual lol. Too many irons in the fire. I am really stoked to have these going. Finding that old nug pict just made me remember how awesome the smoke was. Hope all is well! :v:

I do see some pistils changing colors. The plant closest to where I was holding the fan doesn’t seem to be changing as much. So I’m going to hit that one again for sure. I think th pollen might have flown right over it. but yeah, this run is still going, slowly but surely lol.
