Ah, that makes perfect sense - thanks!
I imagine those white fuzzies you get with the HPA will dry quick!
I’ve been doing ethanol extraction using methods similar to yours for a long while now; I was curious - have you ever figured out using ethanol a post-process to separate the chlorophyll while retaining terpenes and cannabinoids?
I think we get into lab grade chemical territory with this - using hexane and otherwise, but wanted to check in here to see if anyone had any ideas.
I know cold extraction tends to come with less chlorophyll, but also less potency (I might be wrong on potency here).
Great thread.
No, like you said it would require another Polar solvent like hexane to remove the chlorophyll.
Probably too much for the average consumer to get into - I’m super grossed out by the idea of using any petroleum derivatives as an extraction method also.
I’ve got access to a rosin press so I think I’ll just start mass bubble bagging my harvests with dry ice and using that toaster oven method of decarb - great idea!
How do you generally get your decarb’d rosin out of the container it was in? Seems like it would be incredibly syrupy…
I just need a lot more plants to smash!
Generally I decarb the rosin then add some alcohol to make a green dragon tincture. Pretty easy to get out then.
I found these slick 4oz masons, decarbed 1.9g of rosin @lefthandseeds and I smashed last weekend, then mixed just over an oz of everclear in.
I went on the lower side on alcohol so I could just make a batch straight up with that ounce, which might make it super potent, but I’m willing to test it out for science!
Oh yeah, I meant to ask, how did you come to your ratio of 1g:1oz on the rosin:alcohol? Was that just personal experimentation?
A little math, and a little experimentation led me to the 1:1 ratio. Mind you, these are all estimates, but…
7 grams of 20% bud yields roughly 2 oz. (60 ml) of tincture at a potency of 17.5 mg/ml.
1 gram of 60% rosin will yield 1 oz. of tincture at a potency of 20 mg/ml.
Just so you know, the “cold extraction”, meaning freezer, doesn’t affect the potency of the tincture one bit. It just makes it cleaner.
Good to see you come through here @PSam
Great Thread Sam I created a new account over here and found you whats the luck.
Hey I remember Stiggy! How’s going?
HEEY Stiggy! Welcome to OG!!!
I’m just an adviser here, though, Stiggy. It’s ReikoX’s baby. I got enough with my original thread on a different channel but I try to come through here daily and often learn something when I do.
Hi Guys
Glad to be here, I hope everyone is doing Good
PSam are you Admin?
No, sir. Just a Joe Blow like everyone else.
I decided to make some edibles. First I remove the squished pucks from the bags and rinse the bags in ethanol.
Next I strain the mixture and set it in the freezer for 72 hours. This will cause all the waxes to precipitate out of the solution.
A few days later, the fats and waxes have precipitated out of the solution. The buchner funnel and flask were also chilled in the freezer.
Then I use a buchner funnel and filter with a fast quality lab filter.
The filtered tincture.
Finally, this was reduced using my source turbo. I reclaimed about a cup of alcohol.
After running it through the Source Turbo, I was left with about two ounces of tincture and eight ounces of reclaimed alcohol.
I evaporated the last of the alcohol on the stove. I filled the bottom pan with water and the pyrex pie pan fits perfectly on top.
Once the alcohol was evaporated, I decarbed the oil in the oven at 250°F for 30 minutes.
Finally this was collected with a razor blade so it can be weighed out and used in my recipes. I generally estimate this to have 600 mg per gram (60%). I ended up with 4.5 grams.
Finally, I weighed out three grams of oil and dissolved it in one ounce of ethanol. I used a cup warmer to help dissolve it fully. This gave me about 1800 mg and I make about 120 candies with the recipe, that gives me about 15 mg per candy.
Are the bags you soaked in the beginning of the process clean enough afterward that
they can be used again in the press? Not having a press these questions weigh on the mind.
What is the white strip laying in the oil?
