The skunk smell and weed that reeks threw multiple bags and glass is real your memory does not deceive you. How each person remembers it or what there describing may be different. I have a half skunk strain that reeks to high heavens while growing and when in glass or bags. Its more of a musky sour grape but the smell is intense. I’m not sure why this particular smell and taste profile was once so common and is now so elusive but I’ll bet you the super skunk beans suprise you.
I think part of it is that not to many people have been working Mexican or Columbian lines which are supposed to be a large part of the skunk make up. The 70s we’re full of people growing Mexican and Columbian sativa’s.
I’m thinking people should be crossing more old school afghans back and forth with Mexican and Columbian lines. Old Mexican lines are rare as the cartels are constantly crossing and introducing new genetics into there mix and brick weed and mexi bud has long been considered inferior due to it’s poor production and shipping methods. This resulted in most of the beans being thrown away instead of kept.
Funny you say that im picking up an ounce of brick Mexican weed tomorrow for just this reason to see what the plants look like the first grows I ever did where Mexican bagseed and we’re definitely pure sativas I’m curious to see what they look like today and to see if it’s better or worse than when I last bought some 15 years or more ago…so I did some calling around and Bam 65 bucks for an ounce so we shall see tomorrow
Not sure how many seeds will be in it or how viable they will be but if someone is actually interested in growing them I’ll be happy to share as many as I can I only want 6 or so for myself
These are the same strains I cut my teeth on back at the start of the 80’s, when I came into the weed scene.
Lots of different Mexican landrace strains, landrace strains from Central/South America and the occasional Hawaiian would come over… as would a lot of different landraces/strains from all around the world, due to being next to one of the largest inland naval bases in the state of California. I bought a lot of Thai crosses off a sailor from the base back then. Oaxacan, Michoacan, Colombian and Thai are still favorites of mine… and difficult to find in their pure form, like back then.
Finding unbroken viable seeds in brick weed may be tough to accomplish… they screw it up pretty good to be able to brick it up. A small trash compactor was commonly used to smash the moist weed into bricks, breaking seeds, then they let it dry out. A lot of moldy weed around back then too.
You are likely to find a lot of very dark, broken seeds in regular brick weed, but it depends on how the process was done. I’ve found seeds that were viable and grew them out and they were usually strongly sativa leaning plants. I recall a lot having a black licorice/anise flavor that I never cared for too much, but they got me high.
It would be fun to grow out a handful of dirt weed seeds from the late 70’s/early 80’s. I’ll bet you’d find something special in at least a few of those.
You never know what you’re getting when you get your weed from Mexico anymore, or what’s been sprayed on it, the weed has changed over the years, but you can be sure that it won’t look much like the weed you’re used to seeing these days!
Still… 60 a zip isn’t so bad.
Is that a new profile picture? I’m loving the Albert Hofmann my friend.
Cheers!
Ahh yessir new avatar … I’m an avid cosmonaut for sure
Classic Hoffman anniversary blotter
Take 5 tabs to start with… that’s a great experience!
Wash it down with some electric coolaid. The colors man, the colors.
Not the Jonestown kool-aid though, right?!
Just a normal pitcher of kool-aid with a sheet of acid in it and Dixie cups for distribution purposes.
That’s funny you say that. I have a film canister half full of Mexican seeds a young friend gave me. An older guy gave them to him. He had trouble germing them. He grew one that he said smelled like skunk all around his property up in the mountains. I need to try some this summer. I remember seeing that plant. He lost it to freeze before it finished. Now I’m real curious as to what I have.
Grow out all them older seeds never know what gold you might find
I second that never know what kinda gems are hiding in there… Lot of great stuff has come from Mexican sativas that’s why I bought that brick weed a couple weeks ago never know what’s in there
I also got a smaller amount of Panama Red that came from the same guy. I got the first one to pop and it was flowering but I lost it to an infestation while out of town. I had a roommate at the time who didn’t care. I should be here all summer this year so I may try to germ some right away.
I like your thinking… this is me circa 1995-2000
The smell of skunk weed is as subjective as the smell of the skunk itself. I was recently (over this past summer) sprayed indirectly in the face by a live skunk, some got in my mouth and was all over my lips.
I was surprised how the smell and taste was not as “skunky” as I thought it would have been.
I recall smoking some weed back in the late 80s early 90s that smelled the same or very similar to a dead skunk in the road and after a skunk sprays it does smell very similar, but fresh spray right in the face had a bit more of a glycol residue feel in the mouth with what I imagine some garbage juice taste with it. The weed I recall tasted similar to the smell but was pleasant too smoke and always sent me for a nap after raiding the refrigerator.
Im sure everyones memory recall is different too.
I got 3 of these beauties in flower. One is very promising. Narrow leaf, Lots of stretch, stinks like skunky old pickles.
Pollinated all 3 with MSS Analog cut x Sour Diesel BC3 from Top Dawg. Used 2 males. Gonna run a good 50-100 this spring.
It must have slipped my attention but what breeder was this super skunk pack from?
These were from Farmer Joe
He definitely needs to make some more
