My reasoning may sound silly to you but here it is:
I have found recessive genes in a strain that can take the strain to a whole new level. I have done so many times in the 45 years I have been growing. I truly enjoy the hunt and making it mine. I don’t grow in a tent and have more room than most so can take on a few extra plants. My roommate also has a license so we can grow a good number of plants to make this happen.
Fems can’t express recessive traits?
Just differing objectives.
Either have advantages and disadvantages. There should be an advantages / disadvantages checklist. Regulars in one colums / fems in another / autos perhaps. Maybe someone would like to start one from the collective thoughts …
Fems have a lot less genetic material to work from.
Also most who make fem seeds usually do so with very few plants unless you are a breeder working in a large space. The phenotype is usually picked from dominate genes expressed by that strain. Not many breeders these days take the time to work with recessive traits or even backcross the genetics they are working with.
I’m uk. Every plant has to count. We get fucked for growing (illegal) fucked on the price of electric (34p a kw at the minute).
In my position feminised seeds are all I’d grow. I’ve grown regs alot in the past but when you get 75% male plants from a strain it knocks you.
I definitely understand why we need regs. We should definitely not let them ever go to the wind.
You still need to hunt threw the plants to find a keeper regardless is they are Fem or Reg seeds and lets be honest here culling a few males is not that problematic.
Prefer regs but mainly because I want males. Why? I will most likely seed increase thru open pollination the ones I want to have for the future.
Look at all the threads about X Y Z strain that are not around. Regs allow for preservation. (probably opening up many cans of worms with this edit)
This was short but sweet…
I think this kinda sums things up.
Fem seeds are a quick way to bottleneck things.
If you are planning on making seeds it matters a lot.
If you are just growing seeds out it matters very little.
If everyone grew only fems the gene pool would be narrowed substantially.
Maybe even by as much as 50%.
I think when the majority of retail consumers purchase seeds they want a specific elite cultivar in seedform. They want as little variation possible. The popular varieties in the popular music ect.
It’s easier for most breeders to offer that sort of consistency that those retail customers are expecting by utilizing selfing schemes in their breeding programs. To create similarly performing IBL’s in regular form for those customers would be a lot more work. The fitness of each of those populations would be different, but that wouldn’t necessarily matter if the retail customer has no intentions on making seeds or working their selections.
To gain value from males one must select from their progeny. That’s a lot more work than observing the females as they’re flowering, or smoking them when they’re finished. I say all this with a personal preference for regular seeds. Many blessings and much love
From what I understand it’s almost impossible to do that unless its a clone or a IBL at that point.
Is labeling a solution or a deterrent for the consumer if known many variations are normal when purchasing. (as growers we know, but the consumer that just started growing, would not.)
I love the challenge, I like the potential in the work for others to enjoy.
To me fems = $$$ and regs = abundance.
It’s like the fisherman thing… give a man a fish and he’s fed for one night. Give a man a fishing pole and tackle and he’s fed for life…
You do you
The brave doing it have to accept to finish at Salem and being burned in the honor of the market ^^ Half-joke.
Kind of a hints at the second half of the equation.
Besides, the witchcraft in Salem isn’t half that bad these days.
There are some genetics out there that you can get 10 feminized seeds for $50 prohibition, genetics,
Johnnypotseed he has some for 15$
On the CBD/CBG Hemp side they’ve been breeding with only females for up to 50 generations now. It’s very common to see genetic abnormalities on many of those varieties. I think it’s fine to make first generation fem seeds from reg parents for flower production but once you start cutting the male out completely. It’s most likely going to damage the future lineage eventually. Yes I will buy and make fems but It’s very rare and only for specific reasons.
I appreciate having regs on the market, but really only for their seedmaking value. It used to be under prohibition that any grower worth a shit became self-sufficient in terms of access to seeds ASAP, but now with the legalization spread you can be fairly sure that seeds will be available now without needing to make them yourself.
Nowadays I assume fem seeds are made using STS. They shouldn’t normally have a higher chance of herming.
Sweet! Free witchcraft!
