Return of the Husky Hut

I saw people doing that with other hand grinders, so I bet you’re right. I kind of like cranking it though. It’s not hard, it just takes a lot of turns. They make a base to stabilize it, but they are like $65. So I might try to make one out of wood or something.

Le jesus christ. Why is coffee shit so expensive.

Most of the stuff is, but this grinder and the lever action machine will last me the rest of my life. The Breville machine I have is 6 years old and starting to wonk out. It cost around $500 when I bought it. It wasn’t a horrible investment because I’ve used it at least twice a day since day one. Still, there’s a lot that can go wrong with it.

Also the grinder and the lever action machine can go acoustic, so I can make espressos while I camp if I want. I’m looking forward to attempting that.

I’m sitting here drinking coffee and smoking a pipe. It’s sunny out and there is a snow advisory for tonight. My dog is taking up 2/3 of the couch sleeping next to me, and my cat just stopped sunbathing on a speaker to jump down and wedge himself between us.

Waiting for the lights to kick on. I started watering the vegging plants twice a day. I’ll move them into the flowering tent in the next few days.

I just ordered a bag of elbows for the watering tubes. I’m still not exactly sure how I’m going to set them up. I’m aiming for even distribution across the surface. Downard emitters seems like the best option. I was also thinking about getting something like this and drilling a bunch of holes in them to make knockoff floraflex toppers.

On second thought that wouldn’t work very well because there needs to be a lip around the stalk’s center hole and along the path of the slit on both sides. Dang. I don’t think Floraflex makes circular toppers that small.

Also I can’t control the flow rate of the the Growtek pumps, so I would have to put some sort of reducers on them or the water would overflow. So downward emitters is probably the way to go.

There was a Presidents’ Day sale, so I bought the Flair 58+ espresso machine. Chea.

I’m glad I didn’t get into espresso. I’ve been mineralizing my RO water to SCA specifications (epsom salt and baking soda, just like mixing nutes). That’s a gorgeous grinder. I wouldn’t attach a drill to it, keep the temperatures as low as possible doing the hand-grind.

I’m afraid getting into espresso would result in thousands of dollars disappearing from my bank account.

I like pour-over and drip. Daily duo is a Technivorm Mochamaster and a Capresso Infinity Plus grinder.

Wish we could grow coffee…

Interesting analogy

On the topic of caps for downward emitters, these I see a lot of at work: McMaster-Carr

They are easy to cut with scissors and inexpensive. I can take a pic tomorrow of some that are about 6" in diameter, I use them as trays for screws in the shed.

I heard someone else say it can go acoustic. I won’t steal the credit.

Nice. I’ve been wanting to try making pour over coffee because it looks cool. I need to buy a gooseneck kettle for the Flair, so I might buy the rest down the road.

I’ve had an espresso machine for over half of my life. I’ve always talked about how I’d like to live somewhere where I can grow cannabis, coffee and cacao. The three Cs. My next obsession is going to be making chocolate from beans. I’ve been looking at melangers. Maybe this summer or fall.

I wasn’t talking about caps for the emitters, but that’s a really good idea. About a year ago someone posted pots that had a cone on the top that housed emitters. It’s what gave me the idea to make my mist trays. Emitter caps would work wonderfully. Thanks for the heads up!

Also I don’t think I can attach a drill to the grinder because the handle is offset. If I did I would run it at about the same speed as I can crank it.

After using it a bunch of times, it’s tough. Especially with the dense medium roast beans I’m using. I bet it would tear through some french roast. Surprisingly my left arm tires out first. It’s like holding down a mini bull. Once I get a stand I figure it will be a lot easier. I’m sure the v2 will be much more user friendly. Getting the first version was maybe a bad idea.

Intense workout aside, it’s producing some delicious shots. The grinder on the Breville sucks. If I take the hopper off immediately after grinding, there are usually two or three beans stuck in the inner workings. Which throws off the shot since I’m weighing it to as close to 18g as possible. I’m not even sure how they are getting in there.

Well I screwed up. I was thinking my Growtek had 24 pumps, but it I only has 20. So I can only run two plants per tray instead of three like I was planning. I think they will fill in except maybe the first row. Whatever though, I need to start clones for the other tent.

I haven’t hooked up the watering system yet because I’m waiting for some elbows. Hand watering them is easier in the tent than the veg room because the plants are more spread out and the automated runoff removal system.

Anyway, they are about to experience their first night.

Very nice roots.what size pots are you running?

Yeah I’m liking the net pots. I was worried that the coco would flush out of them, but that wasn’t an issue. They are 6" baskets. I’m not sure what that translates to in volume. I would say maybe a half gallon? I’m horrible at guessing that sort of thing.

I believe it’s a half.

They made it through the night. I defoliated them today. Not that they really needed it, but in getting back to my roots.

The older plants are whatever. Some of them are purpling up.

Still trying to figure out a way to water these new plants. The emitter caps looks like the best idea because my limited angle emitters are way too powerful to use. I was thinking maybe use upside down plastic pots. Cut a couple inches off of the height, then a hole for the stalk and a slit along the side to put it on / take it off. It will be similar to my current setup where I’m using a tray as a lid. The only issue is I don’t have a lot of clearance between the coco and the first set up branches.I think it’s doable. Thanks for the suggestion, @FieldEffect.
