@GMan thanks for the inspiration. That’s why I love it here, it allows me to go outside of my thinking. It’s worth giving it a try. Maybe they’d rather have a little cozy shack aka the bat cave. New thread ideas…and I’m off. Thanks bro.
I suppose you would really have to figure out what kind of bats you have, if you would end up with nitrogen or phosphorous guano. Wonder if you could just collect it and compost it? Generally isn’t guano pretty much fossilized or something? Can’t remember the reason all the hippies take issue with it and don’t want it disturbed.
Yeah, its composting down there. That’s the good stuff
I forget actually. I think the aged stuff would be better for some obvious reasons but I would expect you could isolate it to age it if needed, like chicken poop. I think it’s pretty much available as a nutrient as quick as anything else once it’s composted. I have to look it up again.
I’d build bat houses just for the pest control alone really. And, you know us old hippies… we don’t want to disturb anything… unless WE want to! … cause, you know… karma and stuff.
I think it’s the cave disturbance on the fossilized stuff if I recall. I’m sure they have bat farms now for that stuff
Yeah, I think you’re right. That stuff is ancient and maybe there is an argument for that. I remember looking up the houses a good while back and seem to remember that you can harvest the guano.
Now I remember a cousin of mine I stayed for a visit once. They had a really high ceiling garage and it had bats inside. It was amazing at the amount of poop they were leaving and it was only 4-6 I guess. It may be enough to sustain a home grower’s weed nutrient needs each year.
It’s on my bucket list of things I need to do yesterday. I have some scrap wood and can whip something up. I have a good spot to put it and they’ll be comfie and it’ll be easy to maintain. Speaking of comfie, maybe I can plant some comfrey below it, too.
My comfrey Sebring sent got it’s first flowers this week
I need to transplant mine to bigger pots. They look great.
Hmmm…for a while now these last posts I’m wondering if the thread title shouldn’t be “Sebring’s no-till Living Room”
I don’t know how you guys get any work done hanging out on his couches.
Hey at least we are talking about organics… lol
Sorry Sebring!
that…and there has to be some good stuff in here! puff puff pass
Yeah, I hope I’m only giving advice that you would agree with…?? I forget which thread I’m in sometimes. It’s usually the same peoples. I’ll dig up the bat house info and links and serve them up if they are proper. peace
PM sent to @Sebring
I’m cool with it
I actually work at keeping bats out of homes. Bat houses are a great thing to build and easy.
I’ll see if I can find plans that work. Bat guano starts out like little rodent turds, except they crumble easily. You could probably put a plastic tote under the house to catch them for you!
The reason we shouldn’t harvest guano from caves is because it disturbs the bats, the workers rarely have access to respirators and it depletes a limited resource. If you can attract bats, it’s far more sustainable. Aged guano usually retains most of the nitrogen of fresh guano.
What he said ^^^^^^! thx
No no no thank you. This is such a cool idea. There’s so many insects at night you can see the bats hitting them. There’s thousands out here. They have to be roosting somewhere. Those caves should be protected.
Bats consume so much in proteins. They’re little air ninjas. This would be a good split off thread. The build your own bat guano house harvesters? Thanks for the links.
Good article! I got busy and never got that far. Good info from the right people.
You guys and gals keep bringing up great ideas. Time for me to start collecting up scrap plywood and cedar planks for a giant bat house. (plywood is everywhere on construction sites and cedar planking is always being discarded from old fences!)
It seems like it would be a win win for sure. Might take a while to get them to start using it But if the location is right it would happen eventually. Right after dusk last night, as mosquitos were starting to bite, I thought of this again, heh.
I want to build one, too. Once it’s done, it’s done. Maybe I could build a basin below to capture the guano.
Small update before I forget. I finished my walking stick!
All the girls are looking good. Fully seeded out and nearing completion. I did release some cheap ladybugs today in each grow area to combat the thrips and whiteflys that decided they liked my grow space. I’m using ladybugs because the two areas are more or less sealed and the ladybugs can’t just leave for better hunting grounds; they have to eat all the bugs and then each other, so they might never leave!
All the auto fems, plus some CBD photoperiod cultivars I’m testing.
And all the photo fems. That beast plant is Sebring’s Revenge! The far right spear in the front is Maui Wowie, as is the bushy sativa next to it. Completely different structures, but identical terp smells. I’m planning on working to strengthen the spear structure genetics in future generations.
Finally, the FPJ (fermented plant juice) from comfrey and horsetail is ready to be given away in free 16oz jars (over 50 gallons of diluted fertilizer can be made from each jar) at the upcoming VIMEA event.
Awesome bro! I wish I could make that conference. wow. You have all the good people near you. Plus the door prizes would be worth the price of admission, lol.
Do you have an idea of a good source for fermentation barrels like that and/or rain barrels… of any kind. I need a source of inexpensive solutions. I have to set up a rain collection system for obvious reasons, but also the gutters all drain to the wrong places.
I need to get going on making some weed tea, while I still have a lot. That’ll never be a problem. I’d just go up the road and find all I need.
That stick is a real beauty! Don’t go all Forrest Gump on us and start walking and forget to turn around and come back. Let us know if the conference will end up on a YouTube. I’d be interested in hearing it. peace
