Ahem, I mean that’s a nice looking cactus. Congratulations.
In my experiences Myrtillocactus Geometrizans or Blue Myrtle cacti make for the very best grafting stock. Maybe not as vigorous as Pereskiopsis but the less pronounced, less detatching spines, ability to tolerate frequent waterings, and beautiful hue make them a winner in my books.
Your guess is far better than mine, It was just labelled as a 2.5 inch cactus
when I saw the colour I had to have it lol, that’s a bonus if it makes good grafting stock!
Alright, now that everything is acquired it’s time to start the takeaway tek.
The goal is to sift the large wood and organic chunks, then mix and pasteurize the substrate.
We’re taking out the wood chunks as they’re prone to rot and mold in the high humidity environment being made for the seedlings. We’re even going take it another step further and pasteurize the substrate with boiling water/steam
Pictured is an old trash can used for sifting, an ice cream pail for mixing, a cup of perlite, and a cup of peat
Some soil was placed in these two containers that were washed then sanitized with iso ahead of time. Not sure what meals were served in these things but I bet they were tasty, one can only hope.
After that the seeds were spread out evenly on the soil and sprayed with some natural spring water (free of chloramine), then wrapped in plastic film
Now I may be very very wrong and time will tell, but it looks like a couple of the Tricho seeds have started to germinate. Looks as though the shell is starting to split open and a tiny orange dot is emerging
If you’re daring and put in some work on your grafting I’d reckon you can get from seed to flower in about two years.
You can graft a seedling as small as the size of the end of a bobby pin, though you may have better success once it’s about the diameter of the end of a take-out chopstick.
Make sure you support those Pereskiopsis as well, because you’re going to see a tiny green dot swell up to the size of a golf ball in no time.
Lol yea I saw some folks make some pretty tiny grafts, quite impressive, will definitely be waiting till they’re around chopstick diameter. Going to let most of them grow naturally but would like to kick start one or two on grafts to get some seeds going, all depends how many germinate though
Been a lot of cactus talk. Still growing herb too, just not a ton to update.
The Death Bubba may need a prune while the other two catch up. Lemon Slush is cruising along and Shoreline is finally starting to pump out some inner vegetation, she’s been a stubborn one but we love her all the same!
