I like Coot’s mix, but that’s the only mix I’ve ever used. The recipe on the first page of the no till thread on grasscity is the one I’ve been using for like six years, sans biochar. I just got eleven gallons of it, though, I’m gonna charge it and add it to my mix soon. Coot’s mix doesn’t need to cook, unlike super soil, and I like that. I remember reading, I dunno, the “standard” super soil recipe or whatever years ago and thinking I didn’t like some of the ingredients that were in it, although I can’t recall what they were now. Guano? Bone meal? Blood meal?
I have no idea, but I’ve read that tap water’s fine to use in organic growing. I personally use RO water, but I know a ton of people just use tap. I suspect that the bigger the pot, the less it matters what water you use. So if you end up using one of those 4 x 4 beds, tap water’ll probably be fine. You can get a good RO unit for like $200, though.
I’m gonna try to find the name of the place I ordered from, they really did have everything you need to mix up Coot’s mix (I think he lives in Clackamas county, hence his name, and it seems like he’s had a pretty big influence of the growing scene in the Portland area). When I was looking for rock dust to order, I had to search all over the internet. By the time I finally found some, I didn’t even bother to look at the name of the place I was ordering from haha. But I’ll try to find it in a little bit.
Plant looks good, btw haha. I’m SHOCKED that it doesn’t smell amazing. It is Aficionado, after all, and they’ve won like 30 billion emerald cups haha! You’d think that a $500 pack of seeds would yield the greatest weed ever smoked…
I’m seeing a craft blend, which they say is to re ammend soil, and a gas blend. It’s basically the same thing that I use except for the (I do use basalt rock dust):
Plus I add azomite, gypsum, biochar, and malted barley.
I’ve been using alot of promix lately at work, and it doesn’t look like it has any more perlite than I use. Some other parts of the mix may be lighter than what I use. I really need to look and see what’s in pro mix.
The bio live that I’m switching over to, because it’s much easier than mixing all ingredients separately, has several different bacteria and mycos in it also.
It is definitely a bitch to find. Some hydro stores actually carry it. Or at least, some of the ones out here do. You might have to say,”Do you have pumice? Pumice. Pumice! The aeration amendment! Pumice!” to the hydro store employee a couple times haha, but they figure out what you’re talking about eventually.
I finally found a “normal” gardening center near me that carries it; before that, I had to drive to Inglewood to get it, which is like a seventy mile round trip. Or ask the guy at my local hydro store to hold me six bags and then show up a day later and they’re all gone. Really annoying.
@minitiger Thanks for letting me know about that place. I’ll definitely check it out once I get settled and setup again. And yeah, paying $500 for any seeds is outrageous… there is no herb that is THAT good. The BLSR do smell on point though, they just don’t have the typical myrcene dominant terps that most cannabis has now-a-days. It’s kinda refreshing… just pure lime coming from them. I was just reading a few days ago that Useful may make some f5’s of the Black Lime Special Reserve, I think I only paid like $60 for my pack, so keep an eye out on RIU for his release.
@OleReynard I used promix hp the last time I made organics, good stuff… the only reason I wouldn’t use peat now-a-days is because it’s not really a sustainable product. I think Build-A-Soil will definitely give me an idea of where to start.
@Joker Yeah, the tomato cages have been great, but to be honest the MWCB have been stout and the four main colas on each plant have been able to hold their weight with no issue. Hopefully you won’t need any staking or anything.
@Badger Good luck with your pumice hunt… perlite is annoying, it always floats everywhere and doesn’t wanna stay put… also the dust… and it’s another on that is not really sustainable to keep harvesting from the earth.
I use Coots. I have seen two slightly different takes on it. I am thinking the difference is just a switch for cost. I get most from build a soil. I do look around to find if some things are less.
Here’s some trichome shots of the MWCB’s, both are at day 66 today. Gonna try and take them to 75 I think, still seeing lots of clears, especially on the left one, the right one may not make it that long. Smells are fruity/cherry/metal but not much else going on.
I think they’re both just fading out due to genetics. Before I even started flushing a few days ago (trying to make my nutes stretch) they were starting to turn all sorts of colors.
Here’s some more shot of the buds from the nice camera:
To capture the trich shots, I use a cheap clip on macro lens for my iPhone. It is by far the best tool to check trichs, that I’ve used. You don’t have to have a steady hand, just get right up close to the buds with the lens and start snapping away with your cell phone. You can take 50-100 shots real quick and go back and look through them to get a general idea on a plant. Plus, you don’t even have to snap shots, you can look at your phone screen and get a pretty good idea.
Damn, those flowers look really good. Love those pointy tops.
Thanks for the info on that clip-on thing, I’m gonna buy one now. I usually just go by pistils and my intuition when it comes to when I chop, but this grow in particular, the Stardawg f2 I have has been looking done for a few days now, even though today’s only day 52. I busted out my loupe two nights ago, but that thing is useless.
Yeah, they came out more dense than they look. Hopefully the smoke will be good, cause that’s really all that counts haha.
The clip-on macro is a game changer for sure… I have a USB microscope thing-y and it is sooo hard to try and get any good shots with it. With this thing you can just click away.
While I’m sharing, might as well throw up some shots of the Black Lime Special Reserve f4… I just saw Useful post that he had the OK to make f5’s so keep an eye out for that release if you’re interested. I may buy another pack for breeding purposes, getting some really great lime tones from them.
On the MWCB you haven’t seen any sign of it throwing nanners have you? I took mine last night at the end day of 65 days after I found about half dozen of them when going to water the ladies.
I looked over them pretty good yesterday and didn’t see any of them, but will give them another look the next time I see them. I can’t blame plants that push a few nanners towards the end… they just wanna reproduce! Most of the time I find the late nanners aren’t fertile anyways.
Yeah they definitely grew like crazy their first couple weeks of flower. I’ll try and get some pics when I get them out of the tent for chop to better show their size. Would’ve been a cool one to grow outside!
