Some columbine seeds, especially those that come from nonhybrid plants, must be stratified in order to germinate. In nature, these seeds fall to the ground and lie dormant until spring. They have internal mechanisms in place that activate after a certain amount of time in cold temperatures. For these plants to be started indoors, these conditions have to be mimicked. Arrange columbine seeds on top of moist paper towels, insert them into a plastic bag and place the bag in the refrigerator for three to six weeks prior to planting. Check them regularly to prevent the seeds from drying out.
