Yah air pruning happens when there is an increased evaporation layer. It can get ugly if you plant a plant in a coir pot then plant that coir pot inside another with the top edge out of the ground. It creates air pruning at the interface between the pot and the dirt, preventing the roots from expanding beyond the coir pot, and also prevents the coir pot from getting any water, making the plant wilt.

These folks seems to be having much success…

…and, I don’t believe they’re moving them around - much winky

And, yes…buggies are a concern of mine already…for outdoors, I mean…I have none indoors (yet - :crossed_fingers:).

I have thought of doing both, using grow bags indoor and outdoor.

Yeah, my back isn’t diggin’ this “dirt” thing! nonofinger ROFLMAO

Hey @JoeCrowe wavy

I am using ProMix HP CC. But, the Coco Coir is just strands, not chunky. And, not very many of those strands from what I can tell grabbing double handfuls at a time out of the bag.

The greatest benefit of the grow bags that I can see from what I’ve read is aeration. The bags alloooooow for good aerated. It will increase watering/feeding schedules, though … from what I’ve read.

Thanks for adding to the discussion!

That was torturous, for me and the plant frown

This pot doesn’t have holes in the bottom. I thought soaking it first would just make a big mess. A big mess was unavoidable, it turns out. The roots were hanging on pretty good. I used the spade to run down the sides of the pot to try and release the entire root ball. It didn’t work out that way. When I thought I had it loose I tipped the pot over thinking it would come free. It didn’t. I had to work the spade under it again when the plant and its roots were mostly uncovered.

I pre-prepared some Clonex Clone and Seedling Nutrient to give it a chance at surviving - hoping to give it a chance at surviving. I gave this one a 1/2 gallon solution.

On a side note: I realize now that had I reversed the bend in the jewelry (labels winky) I adorned them with I could use it to catch the stream of water I am applying to them thereby preventing the stream from digging a hole in the soilless mix. I have been using whatever was handy to perform that task to date.

Next time!

Now the all Perlite transplant! icon_e_surprised cantlook nonofinger wink

I did soak this one through. Although, it still seemed to have a firm grip on the bottom of the pot, it did come up a little easier.

I don’t think I’m going to like this method, though. It just seems weak in my opinion. The solution I prepared for them just ran right through it. I did expect that.

As an afterthought, I should have traded places with these two plants. This one was growing a little better than the other.

I’ll be surprised if either of them survive. I’ll be more surprised if this second one, the Blueberry (Dutch Passion) survives.

That’s one of the upsides of playing in water. No dirt. I joke I do hydro so I don’t have to clean the dirt out of my nails for a week. Sad part is it’s true. I hate it. Plus the smell of brand new Fox Farm in my bed room makes me a little nauseous.

Yeah your definitely not moving those bags around much. Wow! They are huge.

I’ll remember that. I see alot of this going on.

Holy crap you are the ultimate pupil. That was just a useless story from the organic farm, but you took action. Took me a year to convince my mom that’s why her cucumbers were dying.

There’s a new guy doing this exact thing. Let’s see if he listens.
All he’s gotta do is cut that lip down right?

cut the top off, take the seedling out, or bury the pot completely. You can’t allow the different evaporation layer of the coir pot to root prune the plant. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it’s devastating to the plant.

Raspberry Cough (Saggy Sally winky ) - She’s growing. She’s 24-1/2 inches today.

The Wee Ones - Tangerine Dream x C99 I’ve been misidentifying this one. It is a Raspberry Cough. (my apologies!)

EC 1.0 seems petty low to me, I bet they could take upwards of 1.5 at this stage. What nutrients are you using again? General Hydroponics 3-part?

Hey there,@ReikoX!

Yeah, I was keeping the feed low when they were ailing. I didn’t want to push them too hard. I was just trying to keep them alive winky

I was running them at approximate .7. I bumped it up after trimming the roots and I will bump it up gradually until I flip them to 12/12 which will happen after I get the new (opaque 5 gallon) system running which is happening very soon (a week or so).

1.5 sounds reasonable. Maybe a little higher depending on how they react.

I’m using Mega Crop Parts A & B (with Bud Explosion waiting in the wings). I mixed their “Late Veg” recipe at 1/2 strength this last time.

Thanks for adding to the conversation! IF you can add anything further please do so, I’d be interested in hearing it! tup

Yeah, the 1.5 value is conservative, 1.8 is where I would be at full veg with GH 3-part. They looked a little hungry to me, sounds like they are ready to take off.

I’ll bump them up as much as they’ll accept. I can hold them in Veg a little longer until I get them there while I get the new system up. I just didn’t want to push them nutrients too hard. Then BOOM, 30 days is here and gone! shocked biggrin

I was just working on a sketch routing the new 3/4 inch Fill/Drain lines. The tall girl is nearly 28 inches tall now, though. I only have 60 inches to play with!

In doing some research last night looking for ideas I ran across the Flora Flex feeding system. Hooo boy! winky biggrin The rabbit hole deepens! fly2

Thanks again, to you, @LilJonB and @JoeCrowe and ALL you others! Your comments, suggestions and even criticisms is welcome here! tup

Edit Add: I feel a little bad for not engaging in your (@ReikoX, @LilJonB, @G-paS, @Gpaw, @JoeCrowe, @HolyAngel, @Purple-N-Hairy and others!) threads. I’m a bit on the busy side but, I hope you’ll forgive me for not engaging more.

I’m still rooting for it, even though it was mislabeled.
Your plants are looking better all the time! :+1:

I’m not. Throw it out. Hehehe. I’m just playing. Raspberry Cough sounds great.

I agree with @ReikoX. Your plants have definitely came a long way. They will definitely take the 1.5 and since it’s Ebb n Flow could very well take more. My plant don’t do good at a high EC. She leaves to much in her bucket causing the PH to go down. It took me a little to figure this out. Your water don’t stay in your bucket. This makes me think you can push a little harder then DWC.

When I used to grow flood and drain (trays) I believe I used run around 1.8 and that would be my max.

My only concern is that he has different strains on the same system. It will be a miracle if all of them are happy.
Sometimes a little less is best.
I would up it little bit at a time till they tell you it’s enough.
