A while back, I did some internet sleuthing on converting THC to CBN. I learned that sunlight and oxygen were important components in the conversion. I tried an experiment and placed some indicas and indica hybrids in jars/clear containers and placed them in my kitchen windowsill that gets direct afternoon sunlight. I opened the jars every couple of weeks to allow gas exchange and otherwise allowed them to “cook” in the sun for a few months.
I found it extremely effective at inducing sleep. I can’t vape it pure, as it’s overwhelming for me, but just add a pinch to my bedtime mix and it helps a lot! Just wanted to share this in hopes it helps others.
This reminds me of one of the tricks with linseed oil for finishing wood that I came across while researching UV supplementation for growing. So when treating raw wood one uses a “drying” oil, meaning something that will oxidize and polymerize into a tough and durable coating that won’t be easily washed or worn away, or leached out. If you use fresh linseed oil it takes forever to cure into raw wood, which is why most people use boiled linseed oil or BLO. BLO nowadays often contains drying agents that are toxic and therefore not fit for food contact, being where kids can chew, etc. In Scandinavia, where linseed oil based finishes are still extremely common, even for painting houses and such, painters and woodworkers have a trick like yours. They put large glass jars of fresh linseed oil in a sunny window for a few months to accelerate the polymerization of it, in the same way that one can cure the surface of oil coated wood by using UV bulbs or leaving it in the sun.

So far it knocks me out.Not a knockout or narcotic strain by any means, but last year I grew LA Pure Kush from Hazeman, which is a BX4 of the Hollywood Pure Kush clone. It came out extremely chill and calming, not super sleepy but very grounded. It was also an excellent yielder of rock hard, marshmallow and coffee scented buds that cured into excellent dry sift material. I shared some with a friend who doesn’t smoke much and he found it perfect for his nighttime anxiety. This was from a tester freebie, and I picked up another full pack as a freebie when I ordered some seeds directly from him and said I had a good grow with the testers. I need to do this one again soon.
Nice! I grew lefty’s LowDak out over the summer and it was such a vigorous, beefy plant.
Lately, I’ve used Peyote Cookies from Barney’s Farm to turn out my lights. If I smoke some at 9pm, I’m asleep by 10. Who was it that said there aren’t differences in the highs? I smoke my daytime weed which has pretty much the opposite effect. Liberty Haze, Chocolope, Super skunk all invigorate me. If I smoke them before bed I take a while before I can fall out. Maybe it’s all in my head, we’ll yeah, it is all in my head. I remember some riveting Afghanistan weed back in the day. You were so high and then you were asleep, all within an hour.
And they are beautiful plants too!
Simple but important info in your post. Most literature says to wait until the tricombs are milky and about 1/4 have become darker. For me, harvesting while the tricombs are bright and shiny produced the best for getting high(er). I agree, if you want pot for sleep, let more tricombs turn dark.
Thanks my friend, got the beans today. I have a few strains that people recommend for sleep that I’m growing right now and will be making some crosses with Gnome Anvil, Meph 24k, as well as a cross back with Orange grove and a few other photos. If I come up with anything extra sleepy I’ll let you and the folks here grab some beans
For the last 15 years or so I haven’t been able to sleep good no matter what I do…the only thing that kinda works is eating a bunch of edibles…but then the next day I’m usually still stoned when I wake up! Lol
It takes me forever just to fall asleep…then when I do I maybe sleep for a hr…toss n turn…all night every night…
Done sleep clinic, tests…all of it!
And absolutely refuse to get on additive sleep meds…
If anyone has a strain that will get me asleep and keep me there I’d sure love to try it!!

I’m a shift worker, now I’m almost always nightshift for months on end. Insomnia is a bitch but weed has been my savoir. I have to stop though weeks prior to a new job due to pre access drug testing. This time has been the worst yet, I’ve been rotating between zopiclone, mineral and herbal aids, nyquil (got covid so it was an OK choice though I hate acetaminophen) and zquil.
Of everything I’ve grown, the best knockout smoke has been Northernberry from Peak. It was very narcotic. Although he’s not in business currently, I’ve read some people have still been able to get seeds since via email.
I plan on trying to make something specifically for sleep in my future pollen chucks, probably try crossing the NB with deep chunk and see how that goes. Most of my seed buys have leaned more to the sativa side of things but I have a few indicas to work with.

Pot alone might not do it. For myself, getting in at least some exercise and pot cookies has got me 6 to 7 hours of solid sleep. 5 - 10 minutes of exercise where you get your heart rate and breathing going helps. 20 minutes or more is better. For pot cookies, I have a paper bag i toss my extra pot in so there’s a big mix. For the cookies, I use an ounce by volume, not weight, of buds into a mixer, mix 'em up lightly. A pound of butter. about 2 quarts of water. Bring the water to a boil, put in the butter, when it is just about melted, I add the pot. Bring the heat down to where this is simmering. Stir once in a while. Let it cook like this for 2 to 4 hours, checking in to make sure the water doesn’t boil off and burn your mix. Let most, but not all the water boil off by the time you are ready to take it off the heat. Pour mix through a strainer into a small pot (the metal kind) when the pot (the smoking kind) is cool enough, squeeze the good stuff out into the metal pot. When the mixture is room temp put in the refrigerator.
Next day make pot cookies using recipe on the back of Nestle’s or whichever, chocolate pieces. With this amount I use about 1/3 of the pot butter to replace cookie recipe butter/oil.
We take the cookies about 3 to 3 1/2 hours before bed so any strong effect has peaked and the come down eases us into sleep.
You might test this out over a few nights. Is 1 cookie too much? Not enough? Reduce or increase size of cookie to taste.

High does edibles. I’ve taken to eating a weed grilled cheese a few hours before bed with 2tbsp of really strong budder 2oz trim/lb butter sleep like a baby. Even getting run over by my 6 cats😅
