Bullskinners Redemption 2021: Journal of a Poor Dirt Farmer

I also do a dome on my seedlings. It does help shed the helmet. I will spray the stubborn ones to help… sometimes the spray bottle knocks them off.
Crappie is excellent but I wish we had walleye close. I use to go up north walleye fishing every summer with my grandfather. Walleye is hard to beat but so is crappie. It is just like bluegill, just a little cleaner and not as fishy. I’d never pass a bluegill fillet, the 3 we are talking about are my favorites but I do like me some flathead or channel catfish

What’s your soil mix Bullskinner?

That is a tough one to answer @Rogue. I reuse my soil…just keep amending it. If you can find last year’s journal, Bullskinners Hillbilly Grow show, which I regrettably didn’t finish you can see the soils I bought to freshen up my soil. I also have a worm bin and am constantly composting. Over the years I have added every organic supplement you can think of. I think in large pots it could do a grow start to finish but I do feed with Mega Crop and cal-mag every so often, it just gives them a boost.

Everything I have going now has just had 1 light feeding

I reuse my soil too, I keep adding chopped up organic matter into my pots: banana peels (phosphor & potassium) and all kinds of kitchenscraps, nettles & dandelion for minerals (calcium), tree leaves, malted barley, seaweed, alfalfa, wormcastings, basalt, etc. That’s what I started with.

But from now on gonna use only stuff that’s growing in my garden or in the neighbourhood at least. Doesn’t make sense to buy amendments anymore. Outside I do the same with grassclippings, got a couple of bales of hay from a local farmer to cover my raised beds, makes a huge difference when it comes to moisture, I hardly ever water. My pots haven’t seen water in 23 days. Central Europe here.

And I can get my hands on free horse manure, so that’s awesome too.
Horse owners like to see me coming, less work for them!

Sounds like we have a lot in common. My family has always had horses and horse manure is my #1 ingredient in most of my compost. I also use a lot of sheep and rabbit. Most of my greens from the kitchen go to feed the worms, they do love a little horse manure too. My composting is about to jump into high gear with everything getting green. I have a big tumbler and all my garden scraps go in it plus anything else I can gather. I make a pile and hit it with the mulching push mower, rake it up and in it goes. That allows me to have a finished batch every 30 days.

You are right, there is no need to spend a bunch of money on supplements or soil. It’s a trade off I guess…lol. Instead of having to work to afford it I would rather spend that time gathering all I need and luckily I’m in an area to supply almost everything I need.
I mulch most my garden too. Besides what you mentioned it really helps keep tomatoes from cracking…like they will do after a dry spell when you get a good rain. It keeps the moisture level a lot more consistent.

I had another good day today, that 29° temp didn’t hurt a thing

Well after hunting those mushrooms I realized I had forgotten about my seeds. I had mushrooms on my brain and had a friend heading back to Texas I sent all the bagged mushrooms with leaving Saturday morning.

I dang near waited to long. But the all look good. I ended up with 100% on the 10 GGDP and the 5 Space needle. I also dropped 10 BC Pinewarp and 8 of them have popped.they have made it in the dirt and most are up

I also received a letter in the mail. I cannot figure out who it’s from. I’ve searched my DMs and still no clue. My memory is shit and I’ve done several trades here lately. I came out of Cali. Anyone recognize these?

I think a few of the seeds may be fine but several are cracked or just destroyed. Not sure of the strain

And the garden is coming to life. I have potatoes and onions coming up. The next month is going to be a busy one. I’ve got a lot of holes to dig in still

Ouch, that hurts to look at bro.

On the upside, your garden is looking good so far.

Thank you Sir, yeah those seed did not fair well, not figured out what strain it is yet, but I’m sure they are something I asked for and I really appreciate whomever sent them, I just hate it when they arrive smashed. I think we need a tutorial on how to ship seed. 2 of my last 5 shipments have had cracked seed and I hate it when good seed get ruined

There is a thread about using coin flips.

Nice and Thanks for posting. I have just switched from vials to coin flips and hose washers. It was over $4.00 to ship the vials in a padded envelope. I can do the coin flips for the price of a stamp.

I would still recommend shipping non machineable. It’s 15 cents more, but piece of mind when the seeds avoid the rollers all together.

Agreed but I really like the idea of just dropping them in the box. In a small town where I live, with the laws in my state I have to keep a low profile…not cause any suspicion. I went to school and am friends with the post master and the guy who does the transaction.

Everything looked great when I saw it. I just like the added protection, and I’m in a legal state. That makes a difference.

I grew up in a small town, I get that.

The JOTI beans are all breaking ground and shedding the helmets. I’m going to run Blackberry Breath, Gods Grand Double Purple and Space Needle outdoors. Plus I have some BC Pinewarp courtesy of@Donnie coming up.

Here are my clones. They are all looking good. I’ve got another 6 Cookieland from @Purple-N-Hairy I’m going to drop. I hope to run it close to home in pots. I think it will probably need to bring the in once they really start to swell due to mold. Then I will be done popping seed until I start the autos.
