Strain genetics of the 80's and early 90's....

But on the subject of 80’s and 90’s pot

some is definitely stronger then today’s varieties
most is not

the high of older stuff seems to have a longer duration tho
Something got lost in translation with the poly hybrids of today

I think we haven’t even scratched the surface of what’s possible with the old genes tho
And unfortunately most have likely been lost to time but a lot have still made it thru time

Skunk #1 is a strain ,not a gene pool. Cannabis is grown from cutting not seed. Any semi stable seed from Skunk #1 would be the result of a selfed Skunk #1 clone.

I rodelized Blue Dream and got a superior version from the S1. But it’s very similar, just a more defined blueberry dreamsicle flavor and better tolerance to proper nutrition. Dj short is notorious for dark curled plants. His lines adapted to his crap fertilizer regiment. Most strains today are bred in crappy nutrient profiles and are very sensitive to being fed correctly. I just popped a room full of Chem crosses and half will be culled based on not liking the “industrial era” nutes. We all know stinky trippy plants need more stink and trip ingredients to perform their stink and trip chemistry. So its easy to cull seeds that aren’t processing those nutes. Most breeders only go as far as to impress the most impressionable and turn a quick buck. I believe selfing itself was considered top secret info for a long time. But lots of seeds have been produced with no male, even though you’re told there is a stud.

Most stuff back then was soil grown. The bagseed from that soil grown bud was grown synthetically. Those growers started seed companies from soil grown bagseed of nameless individuals. And that’s where it started to change. Exodus 20:5

I got some of the best genetics at a festival called Schwagstock in bumfuck Missouri. And people want to know about my bagseed, not the genetics of the guy I got my bagseed from. It’s the mentality of busting the crack dealer and ignoring the airplanes landing in Mena. People start with a commercialization mindset and reap what they sow. People prefer to participate in a corrupted system. Reap what you sow. City weed for city boys. Does your homie charge by the drag when you smoke together or is the joint on a timer, lawyer style?

Haha sry, ive only listen to the podcast and they keep changing names :grimacing:

I see that nspecta got S1s of tk on his site. Dunno which cut its from though. Im thinking of buying them just from the description:
"These have been our favorite S1’s grown to date…unfortunately reversing the Triangle Kush mother cut is no easy feat…over the last 4 years I’ve personally reversed the TK 3 times, unsuccessfully until this time…sadly even with large quantities of pollen produced from the reversed female very few seeds were produced.

Just a heads up…anyone who gets these souvenirs…make clones as many of these S1’s are much better than the mother cut. "

Even though BLDs isnt my thing, it would be very interesting to try out something new from the past. If you get what i mean.

Pz my brother :v:t2:

I wonder how much of this is because we are still in the early phases of leaving prohibition. People want the most potent stuff as fast as possible. I don’t know how accurate it is to compare this to alcohol prohibition, but moonshine was a go to for many during those times.

I also agree that I really don’t care about what people decide they are into :joy:. I think there people in this thread who like skunk #1 would probably not like my favorite stuff at all. Totally fine by me, I’m glad we have so much variety to choose from.

Check out some AK Bean Brains. He’s been hording seeds up in Alaska since the 1980s. I hear you can buy directly from him (IG: Dankertowne, iirc) but I usually order through JBCseeds.com. Typically his crosses go for $60 per pack, while the “pure” strains are $100. He has a PotCast interview where he talks about his breeding philosophy…

I’m from Missouri but never attended a Schwagstock. I did go to the same venue (Camp Zoe, near Salem, MO) when an outside production company hosted a festival there (Big Summer Classic, 2007 - amazingly diverse lineup!) and I recorded a stage for their radio broadcast. The site was formerly home to a summer/day camp and was a BEAUTIFUL property with a cold spring-fed creek to soak in on a hot summer day with steep cliffs where they’d project movies at midnight. Anyway, it is a fucking travesty what went down there. In brief: The proprietor of Camp Zoe, Jimmy Tebeau, was targeted by law enforcement because of all the drugs that were being sold during the events hosted there. It could never be proven that he had anything to do with it directly so the government eventually built a case against him for “maintaining a drug-involved premises”. They stole the Camp Zoe property via asset forfeiture - it was eventually sold to the Missouri government and is now a State Park! - and froze his bank accounts. They even sent him to federal prison for a while too. Outrageous!!! He’s free now and still plays periodically with his Grateful Dead cover band, The Schwag.

That totally made me think of this:

A 100 to 200 dollar cut of gmo would blow 99.9% of these seeds from the 70s to 90s away except chem…

I’ve heard this shit a million times and on some level it’s just garbage

Can you find diamonds in the rough? Yes of course you can
But over 20 years of people breeding systemically with cannabis, most intelligent and wise people don’t wanna backtrack that work unless they’re doing it for specific reasons I.e. landrace characteristics or haze hunting

People don’t wanna run that 12% thc bunk weed

Not only that but plenty of breeders like bodhi and strayfox already did 99% of the work… you wanna re do that work and think you can do better, you know what, good on you

But most people wanna move forward and they trust people like bodhi

A good example of scale would probably be to ask @Tonygreen how long it took him to line breed and recombine gg4 which is already a modern cultivar

Really enjoying the discussion here. I think everyone is making valid points. And I’m glad this thread hasn’t been derailed by the ole “is real roadkill still around” debate. Not yet at least.

While I agree most people would prefer modern poly hybrids to older lines (in general), to me there can be an almost homogenized type of high which it produces (in general), leaving it a little, say souless? That said, I do think we all have our own basis due to our personal nostalgia.

Point being, it’s extremely important for us to do our best to preserve old lines that still hold up as they will be used as building blocks to create even more amazing strains in the future. We’ve really only scratched the surface as far as breeding goes…

I’m curious to see what other possibilities will come from pheno hunting lines that haven’t been explored as much on this side of the global with modern techniques. It’s happening as I type this!!! Exploring lines from India or Africa (for instance) and creating new polyhybrids by mixing popular to obsercure, vintage to modern and everything in between!

Endless possibilities mean the search will never end. A worthy trait of any meaningful human endeavor, I say.

Anyway, to keep the conversation going… What old school strains have been overlooked in modern day breeding? We know about the OG’s, Kush’s, NL’s, Chem’s but I’m sure were missing some. I want to support breeders who are asking these questions and striving to forge new paths. They’re out there.

My friend is still looking for the shire cut of sssdh

I’m shocked how many people don’t know about jean guy

More work needs to be done on the sativa side of things both breeding or hunting, but also the community pushing consumer education

So when Virginia went legal, I opened up a small grow shop. Every time we have an older individual come through the store we spark up a conversation about old genetics. A lot of folks here have been holding on to seeds just because it came from something good. And now that its legal, people have been digging up these old seeds.
Places like California, well those old seeds have already been grown out.
I seen an opportunity to preserve things through the store when Virginia became legal. So from time to time I’m able to get some of these old timers to throw me some seeds they’ve had forever. They use names like “Columbian gold, sinsemilla, and even skunkbud” or they just don’t know the name but they know it’s old. And I put it in my collection and I’ll work through it as I can. I just worked through some seeds a old biker gave to me, he wasn’t sure what it was. Well it finished out smelling like strait cat piss. I know some folks like it but I don’t preferably care for the smell profile. But I was able to preserve the strain because I know I needed too and I’ll probably work it again in the future
