Explaining user trust levels and permissions

I’ve created this handy overview of user permissions. Basically all users after registration start on trust level 0 (New User) and their trust level is increased with their participation (by visiting, reading and posting). One exemption is Leader (tl4) which is promoted by admin manually.

Want an illustration?

Visitor → Novice → Regular → Leader → Elder

Seems like great starting point for our user trust system, though we changed a few names. So in our case it is as follows:

0 (New) → 1 (Basic) → 2 (Member) → 3 (Regular) → 4 (Leader)

Your current level is visible on your user page. When reaching new level, you will be notified about new user badge.

Trust Level	Usergroup
0	New User
1	Basic Member
2	Member
3	Regular
4	Leader

So let’s look at each user level in detail…

New users

(trust level 0)

New users/Users at trust level 0 cannot…

• Send private messages to other users
• Flag posts
• Post more than 1 image
• Post any attachments
• Post more than 2 hyperlinks in a post

If a user sticks around long enough to read a bit, system now trusts them as a basic user.

They can get to trust level 1 by…

• entering at least 5 topics
• reading at least 30 posts
• spend a total of 10 minutes reading posts

Basic Users

(trust level 1)

Basic users can:

• Use all core Overgrow forum functions
• Upload images and attachments
• Edit wiki posts
• Flag posts (for moderator supervision or approval)

Members

(trust level 2)

Members keep coming back to the site, and have participated long enough to earn complete citizenship.

Members can:

• Use the “Invite others to this topic” button for one-click onboarding of new users to participate in topics
• Invite outside users to PMs making a group PM
• Daily like limit increased by 1.5×

You can get to trust level 2 by…

• visiting at least 15 days, not sequentially
• casting at least 1 like
• receiving at least 1 like
• replying to at least 3 different topics
• entering at least 20 topics
• reading at least 100 posts
• spend a total of 60 minutes reading posts

Regular

(trust level 3)

Regulars are the most active readers and reliable contributors over long periods of time.

Regulars can:

• Recategorize and rename topics
• Spam flags cast on TL0 user posts immediately hide the post
• Flags cast on TL0 user posts in sufficient diversity will auto-block the user and hide all their posts
• Make their own posts wiki (that means editable by any TL1+ users)
• Daily like limit increased by 2×
• Access special forum category - Private Lounge

You can get to trust level 3 by…

This is time and activity based, unlike the previous levels. In the last 100 days…

• must have visited at least 50% of days
• must have replied to at least 30 different topics
• of topics created in the last 100 days, must have viewed 25% (currently ~250)
• of posts created in the last 100 days, must have read 25% (currently ~ 10000)
• must have received 300 likes*, and given 300 likes.
• must not have received more than 5 spam or offensive flags (with unique posts and unique users for each, confirmed by a moderator)
• must not have been suspended or silenced in the last 6 months

* These likes must be across a minimum number of different users (currently 75 users), across a minimum number of different days (currently 75 days). Likes cannot be from PMs.

Leader

(trust level 4)

Leaders are regulars who have been around forever and seen everything. They set a positive example for the community through their actions and their posts. If you need advice, these are the folks you turn to first.

Leaders have the ability to

• Edit all posts
• Pin/unpin topic
• Close topic
• Archive topic
• Make topic unlisted
• Split and merge topics
• Daily like limit increased by 3×

Once weed became legal here I started looking for a good grow forum. I lurked on a few including RIU, but found them all to be the usual internet troll hangouts. This place is totally different. Trolls don’t last here, and there’s so many helpful, friendly, generous people…a rare thing on the web.

great guidelines, and really enjoying the people on here…i was referred to by a great person on here, and has been a blessing in disguise. thank you everyone for the welcoming , and the open arms. i will be starting a grow journal, and logging a grow already for another member, just awaiting the seeds to pop. once again, feel like a kid in a candy store with all the love and positive energy. I would bet your only issue is read time. Looking at the stats I can see in your profile I would bet that is where you are coming up short. A Mod will help you out once they are available I am sure.

Short 52 viewed topics…but I just did the makeup today. I needed to stop being too selective, start viewing and skimming through more threads. I think even with enough threads that interest an individual, the ones skipped over cause they’re not of interest are ones that that matter to break threshold to L3 Happy to have my stripes

if you just hit the new topics every time you visit and look at some you get it. if you don’t find one in four interesting fake it. i like to look at all the questions that pop up and see if i may be able to help out with an answer or a link to a thread i read about it. that helps out and gets the quota in. i think that’s the way it’s supposed to work.

I like to read every new topic. If It is interesting I read on. If I am really interested I put on watch or bookmark.

i like to look at all the questions that pop up and see if i may be able to help out with an answer or a link to a thread i read about it.

I would LIKE to look at a lot more, however I’m limited by my ability to hold the phone in a cupping position for hours at a time or thumbing on a mouse pad . I find when I do this to scroll and read, when I release my hands from the position, the joints in all fingers are frozen and I can no longer ball my hand up or hold anything with grip, which I have to stop use completely, so my ‘suggestion’ is directed at members that have hand/joint/tendinitis/arthritis issues that may not be able to devote the time such as yourself. Let me show you something

See how all my fingers are bent, that’s relaxed muscle without tension. I can no longer hold my fingers straight without tension, they just bend back…

now i am one to solve problems, so off the top of my head, i use a desktop with a wireless keyboard and mouse and a tv for the monitor using the hdmi plug for input. if you could use a setup like that you could sit on the couch or whatever with the keyboard and mouse on your lap and beside you on the arm or whatever. you can scroll and use keyboard shortcuts for almost everything with a little practice. it isn’t ideal, but i usually see about 5 or 8 topics daily, so about 2 or 3 gets the quota.

it just so happens i volunteered for a friend when she threw a conference for universal access and it showed me things i had never thought of and gave me a new perspective. this very much fits the bill and i will see if i can come up with a viable substitute or alternative method for those with hindrances that limit interaction time such as this.

Unfortunately, it’s about being stationary, even when the hand is resting up right. Left in one position too long is all it takes. It gets more into the wrists upright. I’ve been through 6 years of therapy, the only solution and my therapist had to drill into my head DISCIPLINE how long I play games and hold controllers, use internet devices that require hands being held in place and repetitive motions. If I don’t, then I suffer. Hard pill to swallow but I realized every time I overused, I was sore, so she made more sense and it stuck to be habitual. Just so you know I learned a lot of people are in occupational hand therapy from computer/phone use, so it’s an increasing drastically as an injury/condition that’s permanent. Made me realize people are doing damage to their hands/wrist/tendons more than they know, but eventually there’s a breaking point to the use…

There’s exercises called tendon glides, but you’re not understanding hand therapy treatment is about behavioral adjustment.

i’m just trying to figure out a way you can click a few more pages without much added strain or pain. not trying to solve the cause of the pain, that’s for professionals. i know you’re not gaming the system but you can get the 25% viewed pretty easy just by clicking on a page then hit backspace and click the next one. you can get them all in about three minutes of sitting on a computer, not sure how long it would take on a phone.

if you save the new category for the same time every day you’ll have like 10-20 topics, so you only have to click on 3-5 of them, but i would do half just to make up for the days you may miss. i like to sit on the computer in the morning when everyone is asleep and have coffee, a bowl, and internet surfing. that’s when i would do it if it were me. like you said, i’m not a therapist and anything more than that is beyond me.

I believe your post has helpful suggestions for members trying to reach their quotas with the difficulty of thinking they have to read each post in a thread who have conditions that limit their use, such as mine. Let’s leave it at that

Oh yes it’s challenging at times but thankfully Celebrex makes me not feel like the tin man. I’ve had to learn when I start feeling things I’ve got to stop and not push myself for hours, but I get carried away in a super vigilant focus mode.
